Well this week we have some exciting news that we hinted about last week.

First, a small technical explanation. We were not able to modify any data on the PS3's flash chips due to the ECC. The ECC is a checksum basically, that ensures whatever data is in the block is not changed or corrupted, and if it is it errors.

So, the problem was since when we tried to alter data, the ECC would then in turn be invalid, causing errors, making the system not boot.

We did develop a way around this, however, it was time consuming and quite slow. We used the PS3 to write data to the flash, then dump it, with its proper ECC, then rewrite to where we needed it. This would take hours on end! We were not able to regenerate the ECC since we did not know the proper algorithm.

But now, we can!!

After multiple tests done by NDT to see what the ECC... More »

Update: CJPC has now publically posted the FULL PS3 Home Links for those who wish to further experiment.

Shortly following the earlier Site News from xtianoPL detailing PlayStation@Home working, but you can't play! we have a follow-up courtesy of rda990... According to THIS post (and also the pics/video below) he can play in PS3 Home now without being invited into the BETA program, however, there are no other users active he states as follows: I am the only one there. I can't see anyone there, it's like me being the last man on earth. I haven't seen anyone yet, so far I have been in the (I think its) something Squar- the theather, and right now I'm in the bowling alley.

Update: beefmanbeefer has confirmed it to be working with PS3 Firmware 2.20, however, based on reports it appears it doesn't work with lower Firmware versions.

He also shared a video (below) and states: Here is PS3 Home BETA crashing, what I do in the video is this: First I try to connect to the servers and it fails. Then I press X to try to connect again, and almost simultaneously I press the PS button and go to quit. It then says please wait and then the ps3 finally crashes when you hear the 2 beeps.

Hi, My name is Krystian and my english is bad, that's all about me :)

I found some interesting thing when I was 'playing' with PS3.ProxyServer. I replaced some XML files, and now I can install PlayStation@Home public BETA Trial from PLAYSTATION@Network servers in XMB.

I think it's to prepare for real open BETA, and th... More »

At CES 2008, much to my surprise and delight, I had the opportunity to play the MGS4 Trial. I'm a huge Metal Gear fan so being able to play the game before it's Q2 launch was incredibly satisfying (if only to reassure me that the game is still on track to live up to the high standards of the franchise.)

Because the game is likely to remain low-key until launch, I decided to record my entire play-through and post it for the Metal Gear fanatics out there who are scouring the net for even just a morsel of new MGS4 footage. The good news is that MGS4 has all the production value you've come to expect from a Metal Gear game and even in the tiny taste that the trial provides, it's clear that it will put Snake into some pretty unfamiliar, but nonetheless incredible, settings and situations.

First thing I'd like to mention is that the controls were non-inverted and I'm used to playing inverted (we tried changing them, but it wouldn't stay)... So if you're watching t... More »

Our Resident DEVS have revised the PS3 Bootup procedure, with some more interesting information.

asecure_loader is not at start of the NAND. The first 512KB also is skipped, or actually any 512 block of FF is skipped.

Furthermore, the asecure_loader differs per box, possibly encrypted with a per-box key. Files of course are not in clear, that suggests that at every step an encryption/decryption is done.

The boot loader in IDA does not look microcode for IDL, maybe it's encrypted with cpu key (the IBM secure boot/asecure_loader), that can explain also why a NAND dump can be restored only on the PS3 from which it was taken.

asecure_loader ----> lv0 which start lv1ldr or lv2ldr depending on 0 or other number in NAND FS
lvldr ----> lv1.self ----> cell_ext_area partition NAND, boot compressed linux kernel for example

load trvk_prg
spu_pkg_rvk_verifier.self load trvk_pkg
lv2ldr l... More »

It turns out that the reason for the delay of the PS3 guitar compatibility patch for Rock Band (to allow use of the GH3 guitar in Rock Band I assume), is actually continued objections from Activision, as previous rumors had suggested.

Many angered gamers are now sending hate mail to Activision, as well as boycotting their products.

Nearly a month ago CJPC posted a Warhawk: Take Two PS3 Dev article.. since then a lot has happened, but due to finals and the holidays most of the resident Devs are too busy to update the news with their progress.

Recently ggparallel has shared the following for those interested- to quote:

Warhawk, is a game for PS3 GAMEOS. The retail version on Blue-ray allows you to send pkg via fake Web server via patches.

Howto under MAC OS:

Create a script that binds the various IPs of Sony Web server for example in MACOSX:

# where en0 is the interface you make the Web server listen
int=“en0”
echo echo starting en0 aliases for PS3 networks
echo echo adding Warhawk http server port 80

British magazine reveals details about the game based on the hit '80s movies--just don't cross the streams...

If bustin' makes you feel good, then it looks as if there's a treat in store for gamers in the recently announced game being developed by Red Fly Studios for the Wii, reports UK Nintendo magazine NGamer.

The mag has the first firm details of the title, and says that the game will be set in 1991, two years after the events of the film Ghostbusters 2.

The game will have 10 or so single-player levels, including the streets of New York during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, a library basement, a graveyard, and "Lost Island," along with four-player co-op and competitive modes, and a series of minigames.

Multiplayer modes include two-versus-two battle mode, where the team that catches the most ghosts wins, or another where you just damage as much furniture as possible. There is also domination mode, where players have to cont... More »
