It's been a long time coming, but 06/12 is finally here. For months, I've held a secret, something that may have the shear potential to ultimately unlock the PS3. A few select, knew of my work, and my prospects for this project, and a few select others were told "06/12 is the day."

Explanation: So on this day I give to you a PS3 Tri-Fold Attack Potential release (and Update 1.0 Files, NOT NEEDED- but for those who want to examine the file verification system), all stemming from one game that has a very grave security flaw.

Call of Duty 3: Many games prior to discovering this one, had great potential to write files to the PS3 HDD, such as Resistance: FoM, Motorstorm, and Warhawk. Warhawk was a particularly good one at that cause at the time we managed to overwrite other game param.sfo's.

As we promised earlier this week, we are going to explain a PS3 game's boot process, as well as explain why the PARAM.SFO is so important.

The Flowchart in the image attached below explains a PS3 game's startup procedure from insertion to its execution.

Most of it is self-explanatory upon viewing the chart, however, there are a few notes. Any Retail SELF on a Blu-ray disc is flagged so it can only be decrypted and executed from the disc, and nowhere else.

Furthermore, the PARAM.SFO is also of importance... Upon insertion, the PS3 reads the Title ID of the disc in the PARAM.SFO and inserts it into the DB. Once the game is executed and decrypted, the Title ID is checked yet again to make sure it matches. If it does not (think a disc swap), the PS3 will silently error, and return to XMB.

In a final note, our PS3 Devs have been digging through numerous documents and patents, and came to the conclusion that the PS3 uses AIX (Advance... More »

First of all, readers of our Forums know (with the assistance of our Members) we have recently been doing research into the PS3 RCO file format.

Note that it is different than that on a PSP, however, contains similarities as well. We have received a few questions as to "why" we want to examine the files... it's for a few reasons. First off- We are all curious! Secondly, the RCO files, in support with other files, enable/disable "links" to PS3 XMB options.

In related news, we have now accessed the PS3 Flash's FileSystem, and among other things (to be posted in Part 2 or 3 of this article) it contains a folder called "ps1emu".

What is it for? We found out! Inside the ps1emu folder, upon the insertion of a PS2 disc, a file is copied there by the name of "ps1_rom.bin". Oddly enough, it is actually the custom made PS2's BIOS for th... More »

Here is a little how-to guide on how to run Grand Theft Auto at 1080p on the PlayStation 3. If you have a 1080p set and the game keeps booting up in 720p all you need to do is disable the other resolutions, I will show you how to do that now...

Go to to the display option under settings
Select video output settings
Select HDMI
Select custom
Untick 1080i and 720p
Press X
Press X again
Select finish
Launch game

Please note that you need a 1080p HDTV in the 40" range and preferably connected via HDMI.

Here is a video:

When building a console, you'd better make sure it has a sweet logo. Here are the 10 greatest:

10. TurboGrafx-16

NEC wanted to drive home the point that its console packed 16 bits of fury. Thus, we have this beauty, which successfully communicates the system's power over its NES competitor. The machine didn't perform well in the States, but that's perfectly fine, since you can relive its best and worst offerings via Wii's Virtual Console.

9. Sega Saturn

Companies ballsy enough to name their system after a planet also need an out of this world logo. So Sega snatched Saturn from the heavens and then wrapped an S around it, just in case you assumed Nintendo was responsible for the machine. Too bad the Saturn died an early death. At least it gave us Panzer Dragoon Saga and Radiant Silvergun.

8. Xbox 360

The last thing Microsoft ever wants (aside from losing another billion) is for you to forget that its machines ... More »

I got my copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the PS3 today. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this title for a while, as I’ve been a huge fan of the series and racing games in general.

So when I put the game in my PS3, I was more than ready to race. Here’s a breakdown of what happened:

-9:24pm - Loaded the game, started the install process
-9:37pm - Install ended (13 minutes total, using 5349MB)
-9:38pm - Began downloading the game update
-9:42pm - Error occurred during download, had to start over
-9:44pm - Began downloading the game update… again
-9:51pm - Update finished, needed to hold the PS button to quit the game
-9:52pm - Restart game, going through menus
-9:53pm - Begin car shopping (you have to buy a car first with the 35k credits you have before you can race)
-10:01pm - Bought car after looking for a while for what I can afford (settled on Mazda RX-8)
-10:07pm - Finally finished first... More »

We received this tip via e-mail today: Jan70 (an Administrator) of CDFreaks.com has reported that the Lite-On DH-401S drive can read Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) game discs!

Sure, we've been dumping PS3 images since 6 days after the U.S. launch HERE, however, the big difference is that now users won't have to do it through Linux nor via PS3 SAK anymore... providing they own a Lite-On DH-401S drive.

Of course this doesn't mean they are playable on retail PS3 consoles though (like Linux/SAK image dumps, the PS3 sees the media as a data disc instead of a game disc).

VERY nice find Jan70, and below are a few screenshots and a directory layout for Lost Planet!

Namco has always been ahead of the game in the 3D fighter stakes, owning two of the superlative stallions in the four-horse race – Dead or Alive and Virtua Fighter would be the only two other games that are in the same league.

And although its Soul Calibur series has arguably never hit a duff note (discounting Soul Calibur Legends in the same way you wouldn’t consider Death By Degrees part of the Tekken lineage), its longer-running stablemate Tekken can’t be afforded the same praise.

The series evolved seamlessly from its debut in 1994 to its seemingly unstoppable high point of Tekken 3, but then things started to go a little off-course with the follow up, Tekken Tag Tournament. Although not a bad game per se, Tag Tournament just wasn’t the evolution fans were hoping for, offering up only a few returning characters, better graphics and a poorly implemented tag system.

And then when the fully-fledged sequel was released, it felt unrefine... More »
