Just a heads up for the few of you that still play Konami’s laggy mess that is PES 2008 online, an “emergency maintenance” has been scheduled on July the 7th.

There are hopes that the maintenance will finally fix the crippling lag experienced when playing online.

I personally doubt they would try to improve the online performance while they are right in the middle of development for PES 2009, but it would be a pleasant surprise.

Guess we'll know for sure soon enough!

According to various reports, PS3 Firmware 2.36 is slated to hit within a week. One such report is from consoul of NeoGAF, linked above.

Much like the last few PSP updates, nothing too substantial will be added, aside from the usual security enhancements and compatibility fixes.

In case anyone missed it, a video of PS3 Firmware 2.40 in action is HERE.

Let’s hope this is the last minor update before 2.40 hits. :D

The retail counterpart is rumored to be released during mid to late June, however, recently we had a chance to check out PS3 Debug/TEST Firmware v2.40 (116 MB - 122,268,311 bytes).

Below is a video of it in action, displaying some of the new features. As expected, we can confirm from 2.40 onwards, the system software can be called any time during the gameplay. It appears the in-game XMB does not work while playing PS2 titles, probably the same with PS1 titles as well although we didn't have a PS1 game handy to try.

The video is slightly better quality than the previous PS3 TEST SD Launcher 1.00 Video as video capture was used this time instead of our old camera... as there is no need to view the TEST PS3 in the video this round.

Anyway, more soon... enjoy the video!

Ken_vs_ryu has found a way to download torrent files directly to the PS3 without using a client.

Here are the instructions on downloading torrents directly to the PS3 via TorrentRelay, please use with caution and intelligence:

1. Find a torrent file link.
2. Copy .torrent link (ie: www.mininova.org/get/########)
3. Go to http://torrentrelay.com
4. Click on the 2nd input box with [Get URL] next to it, and type in the link from step #2.
5. Click on [Get URL].
6. Click on the file you want. It will list all the files available on the torrent.
7. Save As dialog should pop up.
8. We only tried an MP3, and it was downloaded directly into the Music folder. Video below:

Note: This really isn't good for the torrent community since the PS3 cannot seed files, but it's interesting that it's possible.

Here is a video (over 10 minutes long) that I recorded of the Ubidays 2008 event in HOME BETA.

I think this video will show more of the space than the first video that was posted earlier here.

User greeny69 over at the GameFAQs message boards managed to snag a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 two weeks ahead of the game’s scheduled June 12 street date.

No one knows how, and we haven’t heard reports of any retailers selling the game early.

Either way, this guy has it. And we’re jealous. :D

They have provided some images (including one showing the basic controls) as proof, and say they might provide more details after the soccer game between England and USA.

With Vista struggling Windows 7 it’s the OS on everyone’s lips at the moment. It could be set for an early release in Q4 2009. Chris Flores, from the official Windows Vista Team Blog brings us up-to-date.

Flores has conceded that Microsoft is working on Windows 7, but has stated that this is normal in the Windows OS cycle. “...we started working on Windows Vista even before we released Windows XP. So naturally, we've been thinking about the investments we made in Windows Vista and how we can build on these for the next version of Windows,” he said.

This time around Microsoft has taken a new approach with Windows 7 by strategically sharing information with key partners. While this has already begun, neither Flores or Steven Sinofsky, Windows and Windows Live Engineering SVP, in a chat to CNET, would be drawn on a firm release date for Windows 7.

Sinofsky stated that they didn’t want another five year wait as was the case with Wi... More »

Lorne Lanning, president of Oddworld Inhabitants, has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the studio is working on new game based on the highly-regarded Oddworld franchise.

Reports of a new title emerged last week, following a speech given by Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun at Wilfrid Laurier University, where the industry vet revealed that he was working with Lanning's studio.

"I can confirm that we're working with Jeff on Oddworld stuff, but that's all I can say at this time," offered Lanning.

Braun stated that the new title would use development tools able to create content on a par with movie animation, with assets suited for both film and games.

"The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects," he said.

Oddworld is currently working on Citizen Siege, a title that has been conceived as a game a... More »
