First of all, readers of our Forums know (with the assistance of our Members) we have recently been doing research into the PS3 RCO file format.

Note that it is different than that on a PSP, however, contains similarities as well. We have received a few questions as to "why" we want to examine the files... it's for a few reasons. First off- We are all curious! Secondly, the RCO files, in support with other files, enable/disable "links" to PS3 XMB options.

In related news, we have now accessed the PS3 Flash's FileSystem, and among other things (to be posted in Part 2 or 3 of this article) it contains a folder called "ps1emu".

What is it for? We found out! Inside the ps1emu folder, upon the insertion of a PS2 disc, a file is copied there by the name of "ps1_rom.bin". Oddly enough, it is actually the custom made PS2's BIOS for th... More »

We mentioned in previous Site News posts that we're working on converting a Retail PS3 into a Debug PS3.. and we have some updated news on the process to share today.

For starters, we had quite a delay. Our PS3 Devs have been using an expensive external programmer to do the job, however, these dumps differed than the dumps from the Infectus chip. It was quite a puzzling issue indeed.. which was the proper dump?!

After many hours of examination spanning over a few weeks time, it turns out the external programmer was the culprit! The software that the manufacturer provided had a flaw in it that would drop certain bytes, resulting in a corrupt dump missing OOB 64 bytes of data. Luckily our PS3 Devs managed to find and correct the initial problem, so a big THANKS to them!

Once that was sorted, testing began by modifying both the IPL and METLDR..... More »

Firstly, this is not for the 60GB PlayStation 3's, some of which freeze up at the beginning of the game. This is for those with a 40GB console whose game often freeze up, particularly during missions.

Yesterday I connected my PlayStation Network ID to the Rockstar Social Club, ever since then my console often started with a temporary 2 - 3 second freeze when I load up my game, then luckily the game continues. But when I started with missions today my console constantly froze up at certain points, specifically at the start or end of missions.

I reset my console multiple times, yet the problem still continued. I read that others were having a similar problem, so I knew I wasn't alone. Then I thought about signing out the PlayStation Network, and for hours of playing after that the game has not frozen up once!

I then scouted the message boards and found that this particular solution completely works ... More »

I've got to admit I'm entranced by the latest series of The Apprentice, because all the tasks that the teams are given seem designed to show up the fact that nobody in Britain makes anything any more, and so doesn't understand supply chains.

They can talk all the tosh they like about being the global sales manager, but when it comes to making things, like meals or printing photos, they're all at sea, because they can't seem to get all the bits together at the right time. And if you can't supply, you can't sell.

In the most recent episode they were tasked with making money from photographing people in the Bluewater shopping centre. One of the teams, brilliantly, found a David Beckham lookalike to pose with the punters.

It should have been candy from a baby, money for old rope, loadsamoney. But it wasn't, because for both teams the back office fell apart. No photos, no money.

And so we turn to Psystar, a (very) little company based in... More »

Update: CJPC has now publically posted the FULL PS3 Home Links for those who wish to further experiment.

Shortly following the earlier Site News from xtianoPL detailing PlayStation@Home working, but you can't play! we have a follow-up courtesy of rda990... According to THIS post (and also the pics/video below) he can play in PS3 Home now without being invited into the BETA program, however, there are no other users active he states as follows: I am the only one there. I can't see anyone there, it's like me being the last man on earth. I haven't seen anyone yet, so far I have been in the (I think its) something Squar- the theather, and right now I'm in the bowling alley.

Update: beefmanbeefer has confirmed it to be working with PS3 Firmware 2.20, however, based on reports it appears it doesn't work with lower Firmware versions.

He also shared a video (below) and states: Here is PS3 Home BETA crashing, what I do in the video is this: First I try to connect to the servers and it fails. Then I press X to try to connect again, and almost simultaneously I press the PS button and go to quit. It then says please wait and then the ps3 finally crashes when you hear the 2 beeps.

Hi, My name is Krystian and my english is bad, that's all about me :)

I found some interesting thing when I was 'playing' with PS3.ProxyServer. I replaced some XML files, and now I can install PlayStation@Home public BETA Trial from PLAYSTATION@Network servers in XMB.

I think it's to prepare for real open BETA, and th... More »

Viewers will be able to watch high definition TV on Freeview from 2009, broadcast watchdog Ofcom has confirmed.

Ofcom says new technologies as well as the effects of digital switchover will enable more channels, including HD services, to be broadcast.

But viewers who want to watch the new services, which will first appear in the north-west of England, will need an HD-ready TV and a new set-top box.

Up to four free HD channels will be broadcast, including the BBC's service.

ITV, Channel 4, Five and Welsh network S4C will be invited to bid for three slots in which they can broadcast high definition TV, or other new services.

Ofcom says the new services should add to the "range and diversity" of TV in the UK, and contribute to public service broadcasting.

Viewers will have to wait until analogue TV is switched off in their area before they can see the HD channels. The last regions to change to all-digital ... More »
