Per Eric Lempel (Director, PlayStation Network Operations) of the PS Blog today:

Hi, everyone, I wanted to give you a heads up about an upcoming PS3 Firmware Update (v2.52). This minor update is coming soon and includes the following:

- The playback quality of some PS3 format software has been improved.
- A text entry issue that occurs when using the on-screen keyboard, USB keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard with some PS3 format software has been addressed.

With PS3 sales overtaking Xbox 360 sales in the last couple of months there have been many articles and reports flying around the Internet saying that the PS3 is finally starting to catch up to the 360 and may possibly even overtake it soon.

Interesting concept, except for the fact that it’s flawed.

The current sales of the Xbox 360 and PS3 on VGchartz are as follows:

Xbox 360: 20.44 Million
PlayStation 3: 15.05 Million

The thing is, that if you look at the console sales, you can see that the gap in sales between the PS3 and Xbox 360 is still roughly the same as it was when the PS3 was launched.

This means that in the current state, the sales of the PS3 are at best only matching the sales of the Xbox 360 even though sales for Sony’s console have picked up recently.

The PS3 is indeed becoming more popular and the past problems with the Xbox 360’s hardware have made quite a difference. However, we a... More »

Although it has arrived a bit later than expected, it’s here now. Team Twiizers has rolled out the initial release of the open-source Wii DVD access library, which allows users to read standard DVDs on a unmodified console with the homebrew-enabling Twilight Hack installed.

Download: libdi (DVDX) / MPlayer

If you have a mod-chip, you also need patchmii_core, in addition to the DVDX stub installer.

To quote: As you all know, I’ve been working on libdi (or the DVD Access library) for a while now. We had some problems getting it out to release because of the difficulties we encountered while writing the second part of this topic. The DVDX installer instead will install a small, hidden, channel on your Wii that allows you to read DVDs on an unmodified system. It is not an installer for a patche... More »

Tmaster let us know at the link above that silenoz has found a way to run simple Java games on the PS3 with the BD-J (Blu-ray Disc Java) functionality.

To quote silenoz: I've managed to launch a simple Java game on Game OS, with the BD-J functionality, thanks to the HDCookBook project. You just need to copy some files on a USB key and you're good to go.

Steps to launch Blaster Bunny, pictured below, are as follows:

1) Download it HERE and UnZip it.
2) Copy it to the root of a USB/Flash drive.
3) Go to the device in the video menu and launch "AVCHD".
4) Go to BONUS and click GAME to launch Blaster Bunny.

It has also been confirmed that this method has been working on all PS3's regardless of Firmware and region, including 2.41 apparently, and it's likely to work for other Java Vir... More »

Following last night’s shock news that Final Fantasy XIII will release on Xbox 360, VG247 has been told be a very senior UK industry source that an 360 version of Metal Gear Solid 4 is “inevitable”.

“There’s only MGS left now: for a few months at least,” said the mole. “It’s inevitable. Konami knows how many million they’d sell in the US alone. If FFXIII can make it to 360 when Sony owns nine percent of Square, Metal Gear’s a slam dunk.”

Kojima has constantly said that the game isn’t transferable to 360 as the Microsoft console uses DVD as opposed to Blu-ray.

Money, as everyone’s mother used to say, talks.

We’re going to have to say this, so just bear with us for a second, and be aware that we mean it in the best possible sense. We don’t want to indulge in any pointless console wars, and we certainly don’t want to be tarred with the inevitable fanboy brush.

Okay... deep breath. The PS3 is kinda broken.

Now we don’t mean that the PS3 will ‘red ring’ at any given opportunity, and we’re not suggesting it’s a console destined for the scrapheap – quite the opposite. When we say the PS3 is broken, we say it with the best of intentions, with a barely contained frustration towards a machine that, in its current state, will never fulfil its full potential.

We’re talking of course about processing bottlenecks, and the PS3 has a tonne of them.

The first major bottleneck is a result of the Blu ray drive. Although Blu-ray has traditionally been seen as the major selling point of the PS3 (and to a certain extent it is) at this ear... More »

To quote from Eric Lempel (Director, PlayStation Network Operations) via the PlayStation Blog yesterday: As many of you know, we released PS3 Firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that Firmware Update v2.41 will be released shortly.

That being said, those interested can grab PS3 Firmware v2.41 below!
