An Xbot’s take on why the time is now right for Xbox 360 gamers to seriously consider getting rid of their 360’s and purchasing a PS3

Before beginning this article I would like to make it clear that I’m a confessed Xbot. Even after churning through 3 separate Xbox 360’s due to hardware failure, I have remained loyal to Microsoft and believe that Xbox Live is an amazingly fun service, even worth paying for.

BUT do I really? What has kept me coming back again and again when a normal gamer would have spat the dummy and gotten rid of the Xbox 360 years ago? Why is now the right time to finally break away from Microsoft?

The following reasons are what I believe to be the most compelling as to why my fellow hardcore Xbots should seriously consider taking the plunge and moving over to the PS3.

The process for developing on the PS3 can be quite arduous... Sony have at last faced the awful truth that we have all known from the outset, that has given us a library of uninspired ports, frame rate issues and uninspired unique IP's: The difficulty in developing for the PS3 has driven away developers.

Sony themselves develop 30% of the consoles titles, leaving the rest to third party developers who had begun developing a year earlier for the Xbox 360. With the ease of working with the 360 and the exorbitant costs associated with the PS3, this left most AAA titles merely being ports rather than taking advantage of the superior hardware buried deep inside.

In a manner very unlike Sony, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide has come out and admitted to the problem and attempted to address it with the community.

Mr Yoshida said: "Sometimes we struggle to convince them (third-party publishers) to put more resources into the PS3." More »

The PSP is a great little platform with a good few years left in it still thanks to its versatility says Rebellion CTO Chris Kingsley.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Kingsley noted that his company has probably done more games on the PSP than most publishers.

"It wasn't a deliberate choice, it just happened. We were very keen on it as a platform and it took off for us," he said.

Kingsley conceded that not as many publishers are supporting the PSP to the extent they once did.

"Well, you know what people are like - they all like to work on the flashy, high-end stuff.

"But there's still very good business to be done on the less glamorous platforms - look at PlayStation 2, it's still selling bucket-loads of consoles and bucket-loads of games, though they've got to be the right games for the right platform."

He noted that the PSP is "kicking the arse of pretty much every other system out there" in Japan bec... More »

The initial shock and awe of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has come and gone, and it's now time to reflect on Hideo Kojima's recently released opus. Though MGS4 is no doubt a stunning game and many would argue evidence for videogames being treated as art, it's by no means perfect.

Having just completed the game and spent some time in Metal Gear Online, I'm here to share my gripes about the game. Being a long-time fan of the MGS series, it's frustrating to see MGS4 turn out the way that it did, but I suppose it is what it is.

Be warned, I don't have any criticisms of the story, but I do discuss the gameplay in each Act of the game, so if you don't want anything spoiled, best to just move on.

1. No reason to be on the Playstation 3

Why is this game on the PS3 again, besides Sony likely throwing a ton of money at Konami to keep it exclusive? It doesn't utilize the Playstation 3's strengths at all. The previously sho... More »

It's been a long time coming, but 06/12 is finally here. For months, I've held a secret, something that may have the shear potential to ultimately unlock the PS3. A few select, knew of my work, and my prospects for this project, and a few select others were told "06/12 is the day."

Explanation: So on this day I give to you a PS3 Tri-Fold Attack Potential release (and Update 1.0 Files, NOT NEEDED- but for those who want to examine the file verification system), all stemming from one game that has a very grave security flaw.

Call of Duty 3: Many games prior to discovering this one, had great potential to write files to the PS3 HDD, such as Resistance: FoM, Motorstorm, and Warhawk. Warhawk was a particularly good one at that cause at the time we managed to overwrite other game param.sfo's.

Wedbush Morgan Securities has speculated about a possible Netflix deal to stream movies through Xbox 360 consoles.

The conclusion, made by the investment banking firm, came off the back of comments made by Netflix management. If true it would allow the online rental service to stream movies directly into consumer's consoles.

"As we have speculated in the past, we believe that one of Netflix's partners is Microsoft. We arrive at this conclusion based upon Netflix management repeatedly mentioning 'Internet enabled video game consoles'," said a Wedbush Morgan statement.

"While there are three such consoles, only one - Microsoft's Xbox 360 - has a sufficiently large installed base to make sense from a streaming partnership with Netflix."

"The competitive advantage of such an alliance is clear: Netflix customers who are Xbox Live members will have the ability to stream online content through their Xbox 360s directly to their television... More »
