A new version of Ubuntu, a version of the Linux OS, is released on Thursday. Mr Shuttleworth said the success of the Asus Eee PC and the work of the One Laptop Per Child programme had driven awareness of open source.
"There has been a sea change in the way people think of Linux, which is very healthy," he said.
"We have seen a real shift in the last six months from folks seeing open source as either a super-specialist thing for people who run data centres or as an enthusiast thing, to something which is energising a lot of the straight commercial PC industry," said Mr Shuttleworth.

They can talk all the tosh they like about being the global sales manager, but when it comes to making things, like meals or printing photos, they're all at sea, because they can't seem to get all the bits together at the right time. And if you can't supply, you can't sell.
In the most recent episode they were tasked with making money from photographing people in the Bluewater shopping centre. One of the teams, brilliantly, found a David Beckham lookalike to pose with the punters.
It should have been candy from a baby, money for old rope, loadsamoney. But it wasn't, because for both teams the back office fell apart. No photos, no money.
And so we turn to Psystar, a (very) little company based in... More »

Maguire elaborated on his beliefs, saying: “We have a situation that if you’re a retailer you’re currently responsible for the goods that come through your chain,” he continues “But that’s not true with ISPs in the future.
This isn't merely a games industry issue. It's an issue for every industry with companies that have a website, and when we look at user generated content it's a people issue.”
Hmm... Well considering Microsoft has said all along they feel they “backed the right horse” and claimed that Sony knows downloadable media is the next big thing, which is why they are implementing it into their plans, do we look at Micro... More »
In a surprising move, Microsoft has released a new Firmware Update for the X-Box 360 HD DVD player, which will automatically download the next time users watch an HD DVD movie.
The new update includes "compatibility improvements" for specific HD DVD titles as well as "additional support for network features," according to a post by X-Box Live's Larry Hryb in his official blog.
The update is widely expected to be the last Firmware Update for any HD DVD player. In fact, it comes as quite a surprise that an update was released at all, as Microsoft officially disowned the fallen format last month.
It is also peculiar to see additional network support as one of the updates, because most movie studios have stopped supporting online features on their HD DVD discs.
The update is available now from the X-Box 360 console and will also be posted on XBox.com "later this week," said Hryb.

Despite Blu-ray's utterly devastating victory earlier this year, Sony may be in a spot of trouble. Seems the company has a bit of a problem manufacturing the discs (I swear I've heard that before), and since it's the the biggest producer of The Blu (that's how cool kids say Blu-ray), it could be the biggest obstacle to the format’s success.
Not that that really matters, since in five years we'll have a new format. Demand for The Blu is expected to JUMP this year to 48 million units; Sony only has the capacity to manufacture 38 million, and that's after an upgrade to its facilities.
And while I'm thoroughly post-disc (technically), I did have my eye on the PS3, more or less because I could use it as a Blu-ray player.
But then I heard the system doesn't output DTS-HD, so what's the point? :P

PlayStation Network head Eric Lempel has revealed that a new PSP firmware is coming and will be “available shortly.”
Firmware 3.95 will introduce two new features, the first of which is the ability to customize control settings in PSP PSOne settings. The second is a more PlayStation 3 centric feature, allowing PSP owners to turn off their PS3 console or leave it on when exiting from a Remote Play session. To quote:
* While playing PSone games on your PSP, you can now customize how the buttons are assigned by going to [Controller Settings] > [Assign Buttons] and select [Custom].
