The initial shock and awe of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has come and gone, and it's now time to reflect on Hideo Kojima's recently released opus. Though MGS4 is no doubt a stunning game and many would argue evidence for videogames being treated as art, it's by no means perfect.

Having just completed the game and spent some time in Metal Gear Online, I'm here to share my gripes about the game. Being a long-time fan of the MGS series, it's frustrating to see MGS4 turn out the way that it did, but I suppose it is what it is.

Be warned, I don't have any criticisms of the story, but I do discuss the gameplay in each Act of the game, so if you don't want anything spoiled, best to just move on.

1. No reason to be on the Playstation 3

Why is this game on the PS3 again, besides Sony likely throwing a ton of money at Konami to keep it exclusive? It doesn't utilize the Playstation 3's strengths at all. The previously sho... More »

T3 magazine are touting a rumor that Sony have a slim PS3 in the pipeline. Their source also reckons that a 160gb machine is coming soon.

Now personally I think this is a bit too soon, but it may just be yet another downsize of the console to save on manufacturing costs.

To quote: The guys at T3 are saying one of their inside men has heard word that Sony will be producing a slimmer, sexier PS3 heading for the shelves this Spring.

While everyone knows that Sony will eventually shrink its very obese console, such news would come as a surprise given that Sony took many more years to shrink their PSOne and PS2 (though Sony has recently successfully shrunken their Blu-ray laser to fit in laptops).

Still, Sony's biggest goal at the moment is building consoles cheaper. Maybe that means small, too. Maybe it doesn't.

Either way, T3's mock-up looks sexy as hell, and they also think a new rumored 160GB model could appear in the ... More »

It was revealed last month that a Blu-ray disc wasn’t big enough to hold all languages for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4. Since all previous Playstation 3 games have resorted to the more constricted 25GB Disc, it was unclear whether MGS4 was to stray from this trend.

In a Konami retailers meeting yesterday, it was exposed that the game would be produced on a 50GB Blu-ray disc.

Ryan Patyon announced on the Kojima Report Podcast that US/European copies of MGS4 would not contain a Japanese voiceover and visa versa:

Unfortunately because of disc space, we don’t have the space to include other languages, other voice over files for the respective versions.

So the Japanese version’s not gonna have English voiceover, and the North American and European versions won’t have Japanese voiceover.

Many presumed that Kojima decided to go with a 25gb Blu-ray disc to save on costs, but it was yesterday revealed in a Konami reta... More »

We announced this notice some time ago, now I would like to show you a picture of the tool I compiled to do the job. You need the Infectus mod-chip on your PS3 to downgrade. This mod-chip allows you to take a backup of your current PS3 Firmware that can be restored.

The news is that before it wasn't possible to downgrade without a previous dump of your own PS3 console's Firmware, but now things have changed. :)

Using this tool you can modify a NAND backup in order to let the console think it has a lower Firmware version, so later you can use an official Sony upgrade PUP file to "downgrade" to the version you need.

It has been tested to patch all PS3 Firmware dumps up to 2.10 so far, but is a work-in-progress as we still need to test re-updating more thoroughly.

I would like to thanks to Gigi and Mainman for their support in this tool, and all the other PS3News Devs for helping us in ... More »

A footnote in the video game violence debate has been sentenced to die by an Oklahoma jury.

As reported by the Associated Press, jurors deliberated for eight hours before passing a death sentence on Kevin Underwood, 28. The same jury had earlier found Underwood guilty of first-degree murder in the horrific 2006 killing of 10-year-old Jamie Rose Bolin.

So what is Underwood’s connection to the game violence debate?

In a 2006 hearing before the Louisiana Legislature, Rep. Roy Burrell cited Underwood’s heinous crime as an example of the supposed negative effects of violent video games. Burrell was, at the time, attempting to persuade his colleagues to pass Louisiana’s Jack Thompson-authored video game bill. He succeeded, although the law was later ruled unconstitutional. As I wrote for Joystiq at the time:

Burrell related [to his colleagues] the story of an Oklahoma man accused of the horrendous murder of a child. Why he chose this ... More »

According to reports, people are unable to play retail copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on modded consoles.

However, some have downloaded and burned a copy of the game on a black dual-layer DVD and found that this works fine. There is speculation that this is an attempt by Nintendo to fight piracy.

To quote: Nintendo has reported that some Nintendo Wii consoles will not read the dual-layer Super Smash Bros. Brawl due to the system having dust and dirt on the laser.

What they have yet to announce though is that they are also fighting piracy with the release of the game on the Wii, as it will not play if a mod-chip is installed.

Many who own modded Nintendo Wii consoles were not happy at all on Sunday when they brought home their retail copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and popped them into their Wii systems.

They were presented with a disk read error message, stating that the system could not read the disk.

Metal Gear Solid 4 will bring an end to the Solid Snake line of Metal Gear games. But, just in case you've heard rumors to the otherwise, it won't bring an end to series creator Hideo Kojima.

Speaking with Japan's Nikkei BP website, Konami president Fumiaki Tanaka revealed that Kojima is working on the concept for a new game outside of the Metal Gear universe. Pressed further on this mystery title, or possibly titles, Tanaka said that he couldn't reveal anything at this point and that a formal announcement won't be coming this year. Instead, we can probably look forward to hearing something after Kojima has written the new title's scenario, which won't happen until after MGS4 has been released and Metal Gear Online has been given a major push.

In other Metal Gear Solid 4 news, Tanaka revealed to the site that Konami expects sales to be similar to past titles. While the sales focus is on the European and North American markets, the company is aiming for ... More »
