While my experience with the XBox 360 version of Bethesda's Fallout 3 was rather pleasant, PlayStation 3 owners don't seem to be getting on nearly as well.

Complaints of choppy frame rates and graphical glitches are peppered throughout Bethesda's forums for the game, with others complaining about random lock ups and various other issues - textures not loading, significant slowdown etc.

Two major bugs have already been addressed by Bethesda in the forums, one concerning the game freezing during the GOAT test earlier in the game, and another dealing with the game pausing whenever a PS3 notification occurs. The first issue can apparently be solved by saving and restarting, while they suggest turning off notifications in the XMB for the second.

We've contacted Bethesda regarding these issues, specifically inquiring as to the possibility of a patch to fix problem with the PS3 versio... More »

And that middle-age is fast setting in... You used to play videogames all night. Your Quake prowess was unmatched; your skills at Command & Conquer unparalleled. You have a gaming history that stretches back beyond the PlayStation generation to the SNES, Megadrive, Amiga and ZX Spectrum. You were there at the dawn of gaming.

Tick-tock... Time passes. You've quietly come to realize that you're not the hard-core gamer you used to be. Even your Xbox 360 Gamertag seems far too 'sensible'. How do you know that a mid-life gaming crisis is setting in? Watch out for these warning signs:

You prefer playing against the computer

Online gaming against real people has become depressing – it exposes your faded, spoon-sharp reflexes and you abhor the trash-talk from 12-year old fanboys. You prefer playing offline against the computer because a game's algorithms are slightly more predictable. And, once you master the scripted patterns of play, you stand ... More »

Say so long to those delay rumors. While word has yet to come on whether Take-Two will accede to Electronic Arts' $2 billion acquisition offer, one scenario that will not occur is analysts' speculated delay of Grand Theft Auto IV.

During Take-Two's shareholders' meeting today, the publisher said that GTAIV has gone gold. The game is "in production and in trucks en route to retailers," proclaimed Take-Two CEO Ben Feder. Rated M for Mature, GTAIV will be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 29.

Though it won't be released for another 12 days, industry watchers have already projected a massive debut from the next installment in Rockstar North's prized franchise. Last October, Janco Partner's Mike Hickey projected global opening-week sales of more than 9.5 million, with 5.8 million units turning up in US consumers' hands alone.

Earlier this week, Variety reported that sources within Take-Two fully expect the game to sell some 6 ... More »

According to PSW magazine, GTA IV is set to get custom music via the in-game mobile phone. It will play any music floating around on your PS3's HDD.

This coupled with Criterion's 'Burnout Paradise' update, shows that a way has been found to get around Microsoft's in game music patent.

How this has been achieved hasn't yet been revealed, but at least its looking up for Sony. Also announced were a few other small features of the game. When in public you can get the cops called on you if you are so much as brandishing a gun in front of them.

Mini-games will include: Bowling, Darts, Drinking games.

You can do multiple missions at once.

Different NPC pedestrians will be harder or easier depending on the type of NPC (e.g. an old lady will be easy to knock down, but mid-age men will be more likely to beat you to a pulp).

The game will feature wall piercing like COD4 with the more powerful weapons. The hospitals wont... More »

If -- for the purposes of the standard preview preamble -- we were to liken the Grand Theft Auto series to the U.S. primary education system, it breaks down quite conveniently. So what the heck, let's do it:

GTA, GTA 2, and its London expansion are like elementary school: They're fun, but in retrospect they're simple -- an opportunity to learn the basics, discover new ideas, and make new friends.

GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas are the high school years. Emerging from a game-development puberty, awkward motor skills and imperfect appearances are matched with a rebellious mindset as well as that endearing brand of adolescent immaturity that generates quite a bunch of fun...when it's not getting you into trouble with the authorities. Popularity is paramount; you start dating, and are even concerned about what you wear.

But then someone asks you the question: "Where are you going after high school?"

An older and wiser Rockstar is... More »

I got my copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the PS3 today. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this title for a while, as I’ve been a huge fan of the series and racing games in general.

So when I put the game in my PS3, I was more than ready to race. Here’s a breakdown of what happened:

-9:24pm - Loaded the game, started the install process
-9:37pm - Install ended (13 minutes total, using 5349MB)
-9:38pm - Began downloading the game update
-9:42pm - Error occurred during download, had to start over
-9:44pm - Began downloading the game update… again
-9:51pm - Update finished, needed to hold the PS button to quit the game
-9:52pm - Restart game, going through menus
-9:53pm - Begin car shopping (you have to buy a car first with the 35k credits you have before you can race)
-10:01pm - Bought car after looking for a while for what I can afford (settled on Mazda RX-8)
-10:07pm - Finally finished first... More »

It’s a computer, not a console – Kutaragi on the PS3.

What makes a games machine?

It’s a simple enough question, but the answer is something that has long eluded consensus. For some, a “games machine” is something made by Nintendo, or something with “PlayStation” or “Xbox” written on the packaging. For others, it’s all about the amount of RAM, and the speed of the CPU, and the number of GPU cores they’ve managed to shoe-horn into their LED-encrusted black-and-silver beauty.

For years now – decades – these two points of view have divided people. On the one hand, the console faithful tout the stability of their platform, the assurance of a 5-year lifecycle, and the relatively low-cost nature of the hardware. The PC crowd on the other hand flaunt the flexibility of their hardware: their ability to improve performance at a moment’s notice and to cater for new and developing trends in gaming for as long as their screaming w... Courtesy of sircarressith via YouTube, below is a video showing you how to perform a fan test on a 40GB PS3.

This will apparently clean your PS3 by blowing out some dust.
