Spare a thought for AMD and NVIDIA. They have been happily smacking each other upside the head for a decade. But at least they have been doing so safe in the knowledge that their GPUs are distinct from – and inherently superior in graphics processing terms – to CPUs.

At least, that used to be the case. Intel has now unveiled Larrabee, a co-processor based on an entirely new approach to graphics processing. If Intel has done its sums correctly, not only will the very definition of the GPU be unceremoniously defenestrated, but also AMD and NVIDIA's graphics chips could even be pummelled to the very brink of existence.

If that sounds like hubris, try this for size. Larrabee could also tear up the rulebook for CPUs, too. That's right, a single new architecture might just take over as ultimate all-round processor, eventually cannibalising sales of Intel's own conventional CPUs.

What exactly is this deathly destroyer, this harbinger of doom made ma... More »

Well this week we have some exciting news that we hinted about last week.

First, a small technical explanation. We were not able to modify any data on the PS3's flash chips due to the ECC. The ECC is a checksum basically, that ensures whatever data is in the block is not changed or corrupted, and if it is it errors.

So, the problem was since when we tried to alter data, the ECC would then in turn be invalid, causing errors, making the system not boot.

We did develop a way around this, however, it was time consuming and quite slow. We used the PS3 to write data to the flash, then dump it, with its proper ECC, then rewrite to where we needed it. This would take hours on end! We were not able to regenerate the ECC since we did not know the proper algorithm.

But now, we can!!

After multiple tests done by NDT to see what the ECC... More »

It appears Waninkoko's Nintendo Wii Backup Loader have finally been publically leaked.

naes of GBATemp.net (linked above) has posted Wii_Loader.rar weighing in at 1.80 MB (1,892,832 bytes), and since then it has spread like wildfire across the Internet.

Download: Nintendo Wii Backup Loader / Nintendo Wii Backup Loader [Mirror]

As a result of the leak, Waninkoko is now quite upset, and announced that he no longer plans to work on the project- meaning very likely no new versions of it will come.

To quote: Backup-Loader is now an abandoned project. Congratulations, enjoy that version that has lots of bugs (yes, lots of bugs are not fixed).

How to use it:

1) Patch the iSO with the .exe that came in the download
2) Install the CiOS on your Wii

Now the PlayStation 3 is a brilliant media center as it can pretty much play any format you would ever desire and the ease of copying files combined with accessible expandable storage makes it nearly perfect. Although as you might or might not already know the PlayStation 3 can not playback the standard HD format that is .mkv.

Matroska is slowly becoming the norm for high definition content and it’s a bit let down that Sony haven’t supported it. Luckily there is a fairly easy work around that you can use through the process of ReMuxing.

Remuxing in this instance takes the video and audio streams and combines them into one mixed file. This means that you’ll end up with a playable file but without any visible loss of quality. This file, which can be a .vob or .mpeg depending on your preference, can then be played back on your PlayStation 3 instantly. It’s also incredibly quick to remux your file to this format as I’ve rarely waited more than a couple ... More »

Don Reisinger of CNET believes that the PS4 will not feature a Blu-ray player of any kid, he foresees the tech industry pushing Blu-ray aside as more capable technology becomes available and Sony's PS4 strategy will change to a focus on streaming and HD downloads.

To quote: Assuming what the analysts say is true -Sony will release a new console in three to five years and Blu-ray will be dead in five -how can the company justify putting a Blu-ray player into the Playstation 4? Does it really want to tie itself to a loser even though it spent so much money trying to make it a winner?

Given the company's financial woes in the video game space as of late, that could turn into its greatest blunder.

The technology industry is pushing Blu-ray aside as more capable offerings become available. I think Sony knows that already and will try to milk Blu-ray for as long as possible. But once the Playstation 4 is announced, the company will make its stra... More »

This is just a short post to let everyone know we're still alive. Its been a quiet summer, most people were off on vacation (or on holiday, for our friends across the pond), including many of our own PS3 Devs.

However, the summer is over and we all went back to work in full force on the PS3, adding some new and very talented Devs along the way who will be helping out!

For starters, our very own ggparallel spent the past month or so along with NDT testing countless edited PS3 Firmwares on the PS3, and has been able to drastically refine our knowledge of the PS3's bootup procedure.

Below is a clear flowchart of the current theory of operation, the basic procedure is the same as we previously posted, that the system is booted in a "chain" so to speak. LV0 loads lv1ldr, which loads lv1.self (the Hypervisor).

Then depending on th... More »

When the PSP first launched in North America on March 24, 2005, it revolutionized portable media forever with its ability to play videos, music and display pictures all while being a powerful gaming machine.

Since then, it gained even more functionality with a built-in Web browser, Skype functionality and connectivity with the Playstation 3. When the Playstation Portable (PSP) 2000 or 'Lite' model was released, it had all the quirks of the original model but answered consumer demands with the additional Video-Out socket which allows users to output video to any progressive television.

At the Leipzig Games Convention, Sony officially announced the newest chapter in the life of the PSP by revealing the PSP 3000 (or PSP "Brite", as dubbed in the blogosphere). The PSP Brite is just as thick, weighs the same and even has the same battery life as its predecessor, the PSP Lite. This newer model, however, consists of many ergonomic and aesthetic changes while offeri... More »
