We recently purchased a new 80GB PlayStation 3 console, and our very own PS3 Dev Courier dissected his new system.

The item that peaked his interest the most was that it had one single 56-pin Flash chip, the S29GL128N90TFIR2, and was 128MB in size in contrast to older PS3 consoles utilizing dual (2x256MB) 48-pin chips totaling 512MB. So, he bought a new adapter, and some blank chips and proceeded to pull the 56-pin flash, and dumped it.

To our surprise, he was unable to dump more than 16MB of it! At first, we believed that the other blocks in the flash were protected via password, however there was something else brewing.

He took the 16MB dump that was made and flashed it onto a completly blank chip, and reinstalled it in the PS3.

To our surprise, it worked!

Now, if you recall, newer version PS3 Firmwares have ask... More »

Update: A brief guide and F.A.Q. are available HERE and NDT posted a more detailed walkthrough.

Guys,

I need a little help from the community, if possible i'd like to have from all of you uploaded somewhere (example: rapidshare) the first 2048KB of the HDD partition. Specifically i need a test conducted this way:

Power up the ps3, go to the formatting utility, and format the ps3 HDD with the option of 10GB for the ps3 system.

Power off the ps3, remove the hard disk, attach it to the PC and dump the first 2048KB.

Compress the 2048 with the program you actually prefer (rar, zip whatever) and upload and post a link here.

For the dumping part winhex (for windows) or dd (unix and windows), if any problem or question rise, feel free to contact me or other devs, thanks a... More »

XVISTAMAN2005 has discovered a method HERE which allows Retail PS3 console owners to install PS3 Debug Firmware on them... however, before considering attempting this PS3 "HDD Swap" be sure to read below.

Upon following the instructions your retail PS3 console will update to a partial Debug/Test console. Partial is stated because upon doing it the PS3 will possess what is pictured below, specifically non-functioning Debug options.

Debug PKG files won't install, port 1000 is open but you can't connect to it, and the PS3 no longer plays Blu-ray movies. Additionally, the Sony S... More »

Hi, I'd like to share the Demo application tool I updated adding to it many functions. Now it's a complete tool, not only a demo anymore, I tested it in read, erase and write modes many times thus I named it "Infectus PS3 Double NAND Programmer 1.37"

Download: Infectus PS3 Double NAND Programmer v1.37 / Infectus PS3 Double NAND Programmer v1.37 [Mirror]

Added functionalities are:

- Recognition and automatic skip of bad blocks, both in erase and writing functions, from both the file dump and the HW NAND (this function is usefull for people that receive an error in erasing using the official infectus programmer).

- Operations are now logged into a file saved in the same Dump directory (InfectusLog.txt)

- A progress bar has been added in order to check the operation progresses.

- At the end of ... More »

The guys at Obscura Digital who normally play with big projectors and buildings have come up with a cool use for multi-touch technology. Old school gaming style with missile command!

To quote: OK, it may be pretty lame, but this is actually a great use of multi-touch. Gaming and entertainment may be the logical commercial uses of this type of technology.

This retro game is given a new lease on life with this type of technology. Oh, and it also plays multiple streams of 720P video, but who is counting.

Check out the videos below, and their blog in the link above.

First of all, readers of our Forums know (with the assistance of our Members) we have recently been doing research into the PS3 RCO file format.

Note that it is different than that on a PSP, however, contains similarities as well. We have received a few questions as to "why" we want to examine the files... it's for a few reasons. First off- We are all curious! Secondly, the RCO files, in support with other files, enable/disable "links" to PS3 XMB options.

In related news, we have now accessed the PS3 Flash's FileSystem, and among other things (to be posted in Part 2 or 3 of this article) it contains a folder called "ps1emu".

What is it for? We found out! Inside the ps1emu folder, upon the insertion of a PS2 disc, a file is copied there by the name of "ps1_rom.bin". Oddly enough, it is actually the custom made PS2's BIOS for th... More »

One of the most frequently asked questions via e-mail, IRC, and on the Forums we get asked is "How did CJPC get his hands on a PS3 Debug/TEST machine?!"

The answer: Monitor places such as eBay like it's your job, and win them before "big brother" Sony catches on and closes the auction of course! :D

A perfect example (in case anyone is interested in buying one) is the auction set to end tomorrow here:

eBay Auction: Sony Playstation Test Development Kit - RARE PS3 Debug

Not only does that PS3 Dev machine include hardware, but as stated by the seller dev16, it has the required 1.92 and 2.00 Debug software updates too- very nice! Happy bidding guys, and if anyone wins drop us an e-mail. :P

Mike is a 15 year old gamer who just picked up a copy of Gears of War. His mom is very strict about keeping Mike from playing mature-rated games, but his best friend let him borrow it for the weekend. When Mike gets home, he locks his door and turns down the volume on his television.

He puts in the game disc and instantly he is drawn to the online game mode. He puts on his headset and joins a game. He and his teammates discuss a strategy and then get to work. Mike decides to go to the sniper tower and try his hand at sniping.

He picks up the Longshot rifle and spots an enemy. He puts his cross hairs on his head, pulls the trigger and is rewarded with a gush of blood on his screen and not to mention the feeling of being a better player than his opponent. After a few hours Mike realizes it is ten o’ clock so he turns off his system and decides to call it a night.

Most kids would leave the killing virtual, like Mike, but there are many people who... More »
