The retail counterpart is rumored to be released during mid to late June, however, recently we had a chance to check out PS3 Debug/TEST Firmware v2.40 (116 MB - 122,268,311 bytes).

Below is a video of it in action, displaying some of the new features. As expected, we can confirm from 2.40 onwards, the system software can be called any time during the gameplay. It appears the in-game XMB does not work while playing PS2 titles, probably the same with PS1 titles as well although we didn't have a PS1 game handy to try.

The video is slightly better quality than the previous PS3 TEST SD Launcher 1.00 Video as video capture was used this time instead of our old camera... as there is no need to view the TEST PS3 in the video this round.

Anyway, more soon... enjoy the video!

THQ has confirmed that Saints Row 2 has been pushed back from August 26 to October 14. According to Reuters, ‘a senior THQ executive’ has stated that this delay is ‘due to product quality and marketing considerations.’

Vivendi (soon to be a part of Activision Blizzard) has delayed PROTOTYPE until 2009. And now word has leaked out that Sony has cancelled The Getaway for the PS3.

What do these three stories have in common? Panic. Game company executives around the world have witnessed the success of Grand Theft Auto IV and have wet themselves in terror. Figuratively. As far as we know.

The thing is, they may have acted too soon. For all of GTA IV’s stellar sales and ground-breaking gameplay, consumer interest in the game has plummeted. Presumably, once the single-player game is completed, there is little left to hold their attention. Its position at the top of the online charts has slipped, too, with Halo 3 and CoD 4 reclaiming their righ... More »

James Price, part of the team at Piggyback finishing up 'Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots: The Complete Official Guide' has given his top 12 tips for the game.

1. Life Gauge

Keeping the Life Gauge topped up is vital, but it’s just as important not to panic and keep filling the gauge unnecessarily with precious items. Though you can replenish it with healing objects such as Rations and Noodles, you should take care not to waste them – especially on higher difficulty levels. Using a Ration when Snake’s Life Gauge is 80% full, for example, is plain foolish. You usually don’t need to even think about refilling the gauge until it drops below 25%. During boss fights or difficult skirmishes, you should instead equip Rations, Noodles or Regain and position them as an “active” item. Once Snake’s health reaches zero, these will be automatically used until your stocks are exhausted.

One other method of restoring Snake’s health ... More »

German user Medran has shared some mobile phone pictures and videos of the PS3 In-Game XMB in action via Aeond on YouTube.

The first one shows the In-Game XMB being used from a game title screen, and the second video demonstrates it being used during gameplay.

He has also shared some pictures of trophies to further cement the recent In-game XMB, Trophies, In-Game Soundtrack coming in June news.

The videos and pictures were taken from PS3 Test kits with the 2.4 release of the Dev Firmware, given to videogame developers in order to ensure that there are actually trophies available upon release, and that everything is working.

As promised, below you will find a video of our PS3 TEST SD Launcher. The quality is not great nor was there sound, but it's the best capture from the old camera we have so we improvised and added a tune in the background.

A video capture of the PS3 would have been much clearer, but we wanted to show the PS3 in the video as well. It starts from the XMB, and allows non-NPDRM SELF's to be executed from SD card.

In the video you can see the SD Launcher loading and booting to the select screen. There is the ability to "move" throughout the list, and upon hovering on your slot of choice, pressing X.

At the moment the titles and locations are hardcoded, we need to add in support for reading either a filelist or the PARAM.SFO's.

The real impressive part of the video is in regards to the Ridge Racer 7 Demo. We obtained the Ridge Racer 7 Demo from an Official PlayStation Magazine Demo Disc. Upon r... More »

Well, it's an SHA1 exercise of mine more than a useful tool, by the way I like to share it anyway:

Download: PS3 PUP Extractor v1.00 / PS3 PUP Extractor v1.00 [Mirror]

It extracts a Sony Update PUP file in a created pupname.EXT dir, and creates a logfile with useful information such as calculated SHA1 and Sony hashes.
