Quality survival horror games are woefully hard to come by on consoles these days, and it's easy to understand why. As hardware gets more powerful and gamers' expectations grow, building a big, beautiful world full of mind-bending puzzles, creepy creatures and compelling storylines is an increasingly Herculean task.

But it's a job Atari's Eden Games studio bravely took on with Alone in the Dark, an ambitious adventure game set in and around New York's Central Park. Alone in the Dark (only nominally connected to its genre-spawning predecessors) follows the tale of a paranormal investigator who wakes up in a burning building, unable to remember who he is and how he came to be surrounded by menacing thugs.

He soon learns that he is Edward Carnby, a foul-mouthed tough guy who's mixed up in some devilish doings. As he makes his way out of the crumbling skyscraper he meets up with the feisty Sara, and they flee into Central Park to uncover the mystery of Edward's ba... More »

Looking forward to the next next-gen (8th console generation) Unreal Engine 4.0 is expected to be released with Unreal Tournament 4 to show off its prowess, as with every new Unreal Engine comes a showpiece, usually an Unreal game.

An example of this happened before the release of Unreal Engine 3, when Epic Games’ own projects — Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 2007 (later renamed to Unreal Tournament 3) — were touted as the company’s showcase titles for the latest Unreal technology.

Back in August 2005, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein revealed that the creators of the Unreal games and technology have already begun work [two years before in 2003] on what will eventually become Unreal Engine 4.

Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney, who’s been working on the Unreal Engine 4 core system design as the technical director, said in March 2008: “There is a long life ahead for Unreal Engine 3. [Unreal Engine] Version 4 will exclusiv... More »

Ryan Payton, assistant producer at Kojima Productions, has said that they asked reviewers to avoid the following MGS4 topics, mainly because they may spoil the experience for some players: Install times, Length of cutscenes (the ending in particular), Number of environments, Opening "movie", Product placement, Plus a half dozen story-specific items.

Speaking of cut-scenes Payton says the game requires an eight minute install, as well as a number of two to three-minute installs between acts.

Tp quote: Believe it or not, I've been so busy working on a special surprise for MGS4 buyers (that not even those who have leaked copies of the game can spoil! Haha!), that I haven't had time to catch up on most of the pre-launch excitement.

Scanning the net today, I came across that 90-minute cutscene rumor, and a red-faced Adam Sessler, who was obviously very upset about the restrictions placed on MGS4 reviews.

Adam asks at the end of his... More »

As expected, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patroits is not the final chapter in the Metal Gear series, but will serve as the conclusion to Solid Snake’s saga.

Confusion arose last week at a press event held in Tokyo, with series producer Hideo Kojima vaguely stating that MGS 4 is “the conclusion to the Metal Gear Saga.”

“I think there’s been some misconceptions that this is the last Metal Gear,” Payton told MTV. He added, “This is really just the last chapter of the saga of the Solid Snake story.”

But if this is Snake’s story, what’s up with the inclusion of Altair’s costume from “Assassin’s Creed”? And how did Kojima get Ubisoft and Konami to cooperate?

“The “Assassin’s Creed” costume was one of the last things we put in the game,” he said. “It was kind of a last minute thing [and] we were really lucky enough to have Ubisoft be so enthusiastic about this kind of cooperation. They worke... More »
