You may think that disc size has absolutely nothing to do with graphical quality of games. It all has to do with the raw power of the console’s CPU, RAM, etc., you might say; the discs are just used to store the data that is pushed through the processors. Yes, but no. Let me explain.
The Xbox 360 version of the upcoming first person shooter Rage will be shipping on two DVDs. The PS3 version, however, will fit on one Blu-ray disc. Developer id Software’s John Carmack says that the PS3 version of the game will look much better. Why? Because of the limitations of the DVD.
Apparently, the company will be using a “different type of compressio... More »

For the last week or so we've been having some Web server issues, hence the delayed Site News updates, ranging from our Portal to RSS and Forum issues. Our dedicated Newsposter Staff have been given the week off, while CJPC (who is currently quite sick) and myself have been trying to sort things out.
Everyone we speak with on IRC say they can access the Site/Forums OK, and we can ourselves, however, traffic analytics tell us over the ... More »

To quote silenoz: I've managed to launch a simple Java game on Game OS, with the BD-J functionality, thanks to the HDCookBook project. You just need to copy some files on a USB key and you're good to go.
Steps to launch Blaster Bunny, pictured below, are as follows:
1) Download it HERE and UnZip it.
2) Copy it to the root of a USB/Flash drive.
3) Go to the device in the video menu and launch "AVCHD".
4) Go to BONUS and click GAME to launch Blaster Bunny.
It has also been confirmed that this method has been working on all PS3's regardless of Firmware and region, including 2.41 apparently, and it's likely to work for other Java Vir... More »
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head David Reeves told members of the European press at private event held in Santa Monica that the 80GB equipped PlayStation 3 Core Pack - first announced by Jack Tretton at the company’s E3 presser - will hit all PAL territories on August 27, with the exception of Russia.
The unit will cost £299 (€399), with additional bundle configurations set to arrive between September and mid-December at varying price points.
Just like in North America, this model will replace the 40GB, while retaining all of its functionality. So - yes, that means no backwards compatibility.

To begin this week's PS3 Dev briefing, we want to give a follow-up in regards to the PS3 Downgrade PUP's for PS3 TEST/Debug consoles we recently acquired.
Yes, it does work fine, and we have successfully downgraded a PS3 Test to version 1.00! Version 1.00 is quite neutered for a TEST, about the only thing that works is the ability to run code from a DVD/BD, aside from that just about everything is non-functional.
More to come in those regards, including our ability to install and dump Retail PKG's on a Debug PS3 console!
Now onto the rumors: As we all know, many have been trying (but failing terribly) to dump the EEPROM chip inside the PS3's controller.
