It is a fairly simple process as follows.. For starters, the PS3 is powered off, and a special USB dongle, known as the Jig, is connected. The PS3 is then turned on, and then off, once it has detected the Jig.
After this occurs, the PS3 is then turned back on, into "Service" Mode. From here, the PS3 is re-flashed using a Firmware Update on a USB stick, specifically designed to only install from the Service Mode. Once the PS3 is re-flashed with the software, it is then used in conjunction with a PC running customized software, specifically the DEX.exe and CEX.exe's.
There are a multitude of special PS3 firmwares, basically three major ones. The first is a Core System, followed by the Service Sys... More »
First, a small technical explanation. We were not able to modify any data on the PS3's flash chips due to the ECC. The ECC is a checksum basically, that ensures whatever data is in the block is not changed or corrupted, and if it is it errors.
So, the problem was since when we tried to alter data, the ECC would then in turn be invalid, causing errors, making the system not boot.
We did develop a way around this, however, it was time consuming and quite slow. We used the PS3 to write data to the flash, then dump it, with its proper ECC, then rewrite to where we needed it. This would take hours on end! We were not able to regenerate the ECC since we did not know the proper algorithm.
But now, we can!!
After multiple tests done by NDT to see what the ECC... More »

Explanation: So on this day I give to you a PS3 Tri-Fold Attack Potential release (and Update 1.0 Files, NOT NEEDED- but for those who want to examine the file verification system), all stemming from one game that has a very grave security flaw.
Call of Duty 3: Many games prior to discovering this one, had great potential to write files to the PS3 HDD, such as Resistance: FoM, Motorstorm, and Warhawk. Warhawk was a particularly good one at that cause at the time we managed to overwrite other game param.sfo's.

More to come, another resident PS3 Dev hinted he plans to share something he has been working on here shortly...
Blu-ray technology is being adopted faster than DVD technology was, according to a prominent manufacturer. German optical disc equipment maker Singulus said it received orders for 21 Blu-ray dual-layer machines in the first quarter of this year.
The company said this figure showed the new technology was being adopted faster than its predecessor, DVD, 11 years ago.
"This means that the orders for Blu-ray in the first year of the dual layer technology already by far exceeded the volume at the start of the DVD eleven years ago with 17 machines," chief financial officer Stefan Baustert said.
The company added in a statement that it had received additional orders for Blu-ray dual-layer machines this quarter and said a key US customer had accepted one of the machines for the first time.
Singulus has only two competitors in the small Blu-ray manufacturing market — Swiss company Oerlikon, and Sony.

The retail counterpart is rumored to be released during mid to late June, however, recently we had a chance to check out PS3 Debug/TEST Firmware v2.40 (116 MB - 122,268,311 bytes).
Below is a video of it in action, displaying some of the new features. As expected, we can confirm from 2.40 onwards, the system software can be called any time during the gameplay. It appears the in-game XMB does not work while playing PS2 titles, probably the same with PS1 titles as well although we didn't have a PS1 game handy to try.
The video is slightly better quality than the previous PS3 TEST SD Launcher 1.00 Video as video capture was used this time instead of our old camera... as there is no need to view the TEST PS3 in the video this round.
Anyway, more soon... enjoy the video!

Dutch Web site PlayStation Only has been told that Firmware 2.40 is 100% confirmed for a release on June 18th.
The previous reported date of June 10th is incorrect, our source told us. Only In-game XMB has been confirmed so far.
However, it's likely that there will also be Trophy support in it.
Needless to say, this is dubbed a rumor until the day (and the PS3 Firmware Update) arrives.
