Capcom franchise swings back into action with new adventure set for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC

Released in 1988, the original Bionic Commando introduced a novel grappling hook mechanic into a stagnating side-scrolling 2D platformer genre. While the Capcom-developed game was highly regarded (and even named as one of GameSpot's Greatest Games of All Time), the franchise has been dormant outside of a 1992 Game Boy version and a 1999 Game Boy Color pseudo-sequel.

That's about to change, as Capcom has revealed to GameSpot that it is developing a new Bionic Commando game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Simply called Bionic Commando, the new game will bring back the original game's hook (pun intended), with players able to use the main character's bionic grappling arm not only to navigate levels but to take out enemies at close range, rappel down sheer surfaces, or toss objects (like cars) at enemies.

Where the original Bionic ... More »

Now that Sony is almost ready to reveal its plans to release a 40GB version of its Playstation 3 console in early November in the US and cutting the price of the 80GB version again, it looks like Microsoft already has some plans to counter the Playstation 3 price cut. According to Spanish retailers Microsoft is planning another price cut, to keep the original price gap between the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 intact, or maybe even enlarge it. Sony earlier revealed it will be launching a 40GB PS3 in October in Euope for only 399 euros, and cutting the 60GB Starter Pack from 599 to 499 euros.

According to some Spanish stores Microsoft is planning to cut the price of the Xbox 360 Premium and Elite. The price cut would bring the Xbox 360 Premium to a price of 299 euros, and the Elite to 399 euros. This means both packs will have a 50 euros price cut. This would make the Elite as expansive as the new 40GB PS3. Off course this is just a rumor, but it could always happen. Microsof... More »

According to reports, Microsoft E&D GM Daniel Schiappa has hinted that a PlayStation Home-like virtual world will be coming to Xbox 360 within the next year.

According to Team Xbox, the Entertainment and Devices boss turned up on stage at the Virtual Worlds Conference And Expo in San Jose and stated: "...by next year, you'll probably know more about why I'm up here." Oo-eer.

Speaking to CVG earlier this year, fellow Microsoft suit Chris Satchell said that Sony's Home incorporated a lot of ideas that Xbox 360 originated, perhaps suggesting that its own MMO-style virtual world wouldn't be too much of a departure.

"I think they've definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they're pushing in a different direction and we've sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here," he said.

"It's a cool world but it's like a little game by itself. Our approach is the other way around; it's tha... More »

SlySoft claims AnyDVD now contains code that will be able to crack new DRM that may be added or changed in the future. The feature, officially called an "AI scanner" is supposed to work similarly to antivirus software, which can heuristically find new viruses. AnyDVD is a popular program for removing copy protection from DVDs, HD DVDs, and BDMV discs.

"The AI Scanner in AnyDVD is a new, pro-active copy protection circumvention method," said Giancarlo Bettini, SlySoft's chief executive, in a statement. "It allows the user to make safety backups of his DVD movies even if the newest anti-piracy technology is used. It is our belief that the AI Scanner will even work on protections yet to be released, so we see this as a future-proof technology. This is indeed a hard nut to crack for the copy protection industry."

As Blu-ray in particular was designed with an option to support changing DRM with player firmware updates,... More »
