Hi again! It’s great to see the positive reaction to the unveiling of system software update v2.40.

We can’t wait for you to finally go hands-on with XMB access in-game and the Trophy system – and it’s less than 2 days away.

Not surprisingly, a number of you have posed questions both here and on other forums.

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions:

Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?

We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for.

Can you use the web browser in game?

No, you must exit the game before browsing the int... More »

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment exec Kaz Hirai announced "Life with PlayStation" for the PS3.

During the presentation, the "Life" was demoed for the audience for the first time — the service shows the Earth, and users can access current news and weather for locations around the world.

It's possible to even pull up the full article from the headline. Users can also set background music while looking at the Earth, checking the weather and the world news. Click through pics below to see it in action.

As we promised earlier this week, we are going to explain a PS3 game's boot process, as well as explain why the PARAM.SFO is so important.

The Flowchart in the image attached below explains a PS3 game's startup procedure from insertion to its execution.

Most of it is self-explanatory upon viewing the chart, however, there are a few notes. Any Retail SELF on a Blu-ray disc is flagged so it can only be decrypted and executed from the disc, and nowhere else.

Furthermore, the PARAM.SFO is also of importance... Upon insertion, the PS3 reads the Title ID of the disc in the PARAM.SFO and inserts it into the DB. Once the game is executed and decrypted, the Title ID is checked yet again to make sure it matches. If it does not (think a disc swap), the PS3 will silently error, and return to XMB.

In a final note, our PS3 Devs have been digging through numerous documents and patents, and came to the conclusion that the PS3 uses AIX (Advance... More »

No, no, no! When Hideo Kojima said the MGS4 graphics on the PS3 weren't to his "satisfaction" or that he realized there were lots of "restrictions" the PS3 posed, he didn't mean it. He was just trying to be humble, you know!

He's not disappointed with the PS3 at all. He is totally happy with it. The PS3 is awesome. Says Kojima:

"On the Internet, there's stuff saying "Hideo Kojima" isn't satisfied with the PS3. I'd like to talk about that today. I just got back from Paris and did 15 interviews and everyone asked me about it, did I say that. The meaning of what I said has totally been changed, made totally different. Today, I'd like to talk about that. Why did it turn into that?

When I'm doing an interview, I answer in Japanese, and I can't control how the writer will interpret that into English... What I say is then translated in English, and the writer then changes that into their own words and writes that. So, right there, the meaning of... More »

Bioware's highly acclaimed and formerly XBox 360 exclusive RPG Mass Effect is fast approaching its release on the PC. Most PC gamers were undoubtedly pleased to hear about enhanced graphics, faster load times, and a re-designed menu system; but it's likely that fewer were happy to hear about the evil digital rights management that will be unscrupulously bundled with the game.

Like an increasing number of PC games nowadays, Mass Effect will require an online activation when it is installed. This has been common practice ever since Half-Life 2. But Mass Effect will also "phone home" every 10 days to make sure the key is valid, and it will carry a three-install limit. This has set many message boards afire with rants about "draconian" DRM and people threatening to pirate the game precisely because of the DRM.

It's times like this that I wonder why people are so adamantly opposed to DRM. It's worth noting that piracy came first; if people didn't steal their game... More »

We all know using the PS3 on screen keyboard to type, can be very tedious. So tedious, that I have had people whom I’ve sent a PSN message to, reply via email, just so they could just type on their computer.

I didnt really want a huge full-sized keyboard and mouse setup, as I game from the comfort of my couch. I dont have the space for it and its inconvenient.

There is a thumbpad accessory for the PS3. But many have reported that it was a waste of money, even some people claiming it couldnt even connect to the PS3.

So what is a PS3 owner to do to be able to type with ease? The answer? Logitech Dinovo Mini. Read the review below…

The Logitech Dinovo Mini, is marketed mainly toward Home Theater PC owners who do want a huge keyboard in their living room, much like my situation. However its not just for the PC. There is a switch on the backside of the mini keyboard that lets you switch from PC to PS3.

I was well and truly stuck about a third of the way through the A Class races in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. When you’re starting in last place and playing catch up with an equally powerful car, making just one mistake means you’re toast - especially on a speedway-style circuit.

I’d all but given up on the thought of beating the game until Logitech told me they were sending over a Driving Force GT. It probably won’t come as a shock when I tell you that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue comes alive when it’s played with a force-feedback wheel.

The jump between a Sixaxis and the Driving Force GT is of a similar magnitude to the jump between the 8-way digital joysticks of the 16-bit era and the dual-analogs of recent years. You can feel the car lose traction, and intuitively wrestle the back end into submission.

All of a sudden I could actually compete. Not only could I reliably take someone under heavy brakes, I could gently guide a car around the Hi... More »
