Sorry PS3 gamers, but according to Treyarch and the people at Activision, the upcoming online multiplayer BETA for Call of Duty: World at War will be for XBox 360 and PC owners only.

For those of you who remember, Infinity Ward pulled a similar move last year by hosting the Call of Duty 4 BETA only on the XBox 360. After speaking with a Activision representative, I was told that the reasoning behind doing an XBox 360 and PC BETA was primarily due to increased server and connectivity data.

"We are running the BETA only on the XBox 360 and PC," said the representative. He continued then to point out that most BETAs on the PS3 are run by first party anyways, and if Treyarch runs their testing on the XBox 360 and PC they acquire more data on servers and connectivity.

Personally, I think that it's imperative to sufficiently test all networks a game will be running on, and that includes the PlayStation Network. Yes, if you were to run the BETA so... More »

This is a dramatic change in my opinion. For almost 1/8 of the cost of the games we purchase we can make a backup copy just in case little cousin Debbie finds out it's really cool to microwave MGS4.

RiDATA 25GB 2X BD-R Inkjet Printable 25 Packs Disc - $179.99 (That's $7.20 a disc, and they are printable :O!)

Combo Deal (Model GGW-H20LK - OEM): LG Black 6X BD Burner & HD DVD-ROM Drive SATA & RiDATA 25GB 2X BD-R Inkjet Printable 25 Packs Disc - $379.98

Of course to whom this backup is useful to... it can't be said as of yet, but never the less with dropping prices, I see a bright future.

The second listing is for those without a BD-R drive yet. $200 and it is almost future proof with 6x write compatibility versus the 2x available. AND it reads HD DVD's :O... More »

CVG has learnt that Sony's next firmware update for PlayStation 3 will include an option for screen grabbing, allowing you to take your own shots of what you get up to on your PS3.

A development source has told CVG that PS3 firmware update 2.5 is rumored to have screen grabbing built in.

Exactly how this would be done and what you could do with the shots once you've grabbed a piece of the action isn't yet known. But you've got to reckon that uploading them to a server and showing off and using the images as themes would be a safe bet.

Sony hasn't announced anything about a 2.5 update yet and won't even discuss the subject.

We'll file this one under 'wait and see' for the time being.

The new head of Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida said, in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine, that Team Ico has something “really, really good on the way.”

The full quote: “They are working on a title. I started the ICO project. Ueda-san joined my team in Japan as a cinematic animator, but he created a short movie and presented it to me and said, “I want to make this game.”

I said, “Yes, let’s do it, but you have never made a game. We have to have experienced people do it,” so it took a while, recruiting one person at a time. And because Fumito Ueda doesn’t compromise, we had to move the development from PSone to PlayStation 2. Then I couldn’t complete the game because I moved to the United States.

It took four years and the second game took four years too. So I started calling them the ‘Olympic Team.’ They haven’t released a PS3 title yet - of course not - they’ll take four years! But ... More »

As many VGC forum-goers have been discussing with great exposition lately, there are many of us who feel as if the reviewing segment of our hobby has gone completely awry over the past few years. In my ever-so humble opinion, when it comes right down to it, I question whether it was any good from the outset.

Many of us grew up with gaming but unfortunately, in many ways, gaming hasn’t grown up with us. We’re still the purchasers of hackneyed trash and in most cases, we do it with a smile. I had an opening rant prepared on the review system for this editorial but after lengthy consideration, I will defer to Rob Reiner and his mockumentary classic, This is Spinal Tap.

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one... More »

Despite being previously announced for a July debut last month by Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai, SCEA company senior development manager Noam Rimon has revealed that Life with PlayStation will launch in August.

Rimon attributed the unexpected delay to “a few procedural matters.” From what was shown to Japanese press, the service will allow PS3 owners to interact with a virtual Google Maps-esque globe presented in 3D, offering convenient access to weather data and news headlines from around the world.

To quote: We’d like to provide a quick update on Life with PlayStation for PLAYSTATION 3. We know many of you are eager to try out the new service for yourself, but you’ll have to hold tight. Due to a few procedural matters, the new service will make its way to PlayStation fans in August.

GN has been following the Xbox 360's various hardware alterations for quite a while now, and it's been a pretty interesting story so far. From the original, RRoD prone Xenon mobo to the Zephyr and Falcon successors as well as the upcoming Jasper design, there's been no shortage of news in the field. Today, as a matter of fact, we've got a look at another Xbox 360 chipset, the extremely rare "Opus" as discovered by member Electric Tunder on the Xbox-Underground forums.

Designed specifically to help Microsoft recoup losses on RRoD'd hardware that's been returned for repairs, the Opus chipset is a Falcon-generation mobo that'll snap into original Xenon Xbox 360s. Because it is installed in refurbished Xbox 360 launch chasses, the Opus lacks HDMI-out. It does, however, feature the Falcon-era HANA video chip that supports digital output, which means a really skilled modder could potentially retrofit such a connection.

The Opus also looks to be sporting the 65-nm ... More »
