Many people have been wondering exactly what the differences are between Development and Retail PlayStation 3 Systems, and we figured now would be a great time to clarify these along with reporting some new findings.

Aside from the different hardware revisions of the PS3's motherboard, the systems are virtually the same as mentioned in previous posts. We have examined multiple PS3 TEST's, Retail PS3's, Demo Unit PS3's, and even Factory Mode PS3's, and found that there are no hardware differences between them at all.

Mind you, there are differences, but they are due to the hardware revision, not due to the systems themselves. To make that more clear, the units are identical to their counterparts of the same hardware revision.

So, the question is- what's the difference? Software!

We all know the difference is in the software, and after examining countless dumps from these systems, on top of flash dumps given to us by you, our loyal re... More »

We recently purchased a new 80GB PlayStation 3 console, and our very own PS3 Dev Courier dissected his new system.

The item that peaked his interest the most was that it had one single 56-pin Flash chip, the S29GL128N90TFIR2, and was 128MB in size in contrast to older PS3 consoles utilizing dual (2x256MB) 48-pin chips totaling 512MB. So, he bought a new adapter, and some blank chips and proceeded to pull the 56-pin flash, and dumped it.

To our surprise, he was unable to dump more than 16MB of it! At first, we believed that the other blocks in the flash were protected via password, however there was something else brewing.

He took the 16MB dump that was made and flashed it onto a completly blank chip, and reinstalled it in the PS3.

To our surprise, it worked!

Now, if you recall, newer version PS3 Firmwares have ask... More »

Surprisingly, the woman stated “It should be arriving today.”

The user decided to call back and this time record the call. We got the audio for download here.

The fiance of Dustin Waller bought him a second hand PS3 from a store in Cleveland, but little did she know it was infact a stolen system. However, the police were able to track the system whenever Waller turned on the system as the original owner of the PS3's PSN ID was still stored on the system. The police confiscated the system and Waller was compensated by the store with an unwanted Xbox 360.

To quote: Police appeared on Waller's door after the purchase, and they inquired as to how he had come across the system. According to the Salisbury Post, the police were able to track the system whenever Waller turned on his system.

The original owner of the PS3's PSN ID was still stored on the system, and it was set to auto-login when the system turned on. By tracking Waller's IP address, they were able to find him.

Waller is of course innocent in the whole debacle, but police confiscated his system nonetheless. While the police look for the p... More »

From the beginning of time, Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers have been dueling about who’s console is the more graphically powerful. In these skirmishes, terms like CPU, GPU, and RAM have been thrown around, but now those folks on the PS3 side of the fray have another weapon in their arsenal: disc format.

You may think that disc size has absolutely nothing to do with graphical quality of games. It all has to do with the raw power of the console’s CPU, RAM, etc., you might say; the discs are just used to store the data that is pushed through the processors. Yes, but no. Let me explain.

The Xbox 360 version of the upcoming first person shooter Rage will be shipping on two DVDs. The PS3 version, however, will fit on one Blu-ray disc. Developer id Software’s John Carmack says that the PS3 version of the game will look much better. Why? Because of the limitations of the DVD.

Apparently, the company will be using a “different type of compressio... More »

Key points from Ben Heck: Well of course I couldn’t resist grabbing one of these, and since I need parts anyway for an upcoming contest, why not?

“60 GIGA PRO-GEAR SPEC” would be a lot catchier.

The big question of course is whether or not this unit has the new 65nm GPU... check out the photos (linked above) to see!

The box. They stuck on a sticker, but the box print has 60 on it as well. I would have put an exclamation point after “hard drive!” but that’s just me...

FYI this unit was built on 6-20-08 and is lot # 825.

There it is. Now your Xbox can have the same size hard drive as a 4 year old laptop. Personally I don’t see why the Xbox & Ps3 are so hung up on hard drive space, you either have one, or you don’t (ahem Wii) I never even filled up my old 20 gig’er, personally...

Looks normals so far. Current 65nm CPU & heatsink... same old “super” GPU heatsink. I bet a lot of the co... More »

There's apparently a big feature article in the upcoming issue of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu that talks Square Enix, Final Fantasy XIII and all that jazz.

While scans haven't hit the Internet yet, we've heard from several trusted insiders who have seen the yet-unreleased issue. It mentions that FFXIII is going to be out in Japan by next summer and in Europe/USA on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 by the end of 2009 — which pretty much what we already know.

Here's the juicy bit: According to the Famitsu piece, Microsoft is footing the bill for Square Enix's FFXIII breach of PS3 exclusivity contract. No idea how much money that entails or the exact deal Microsoft worked out with Square Enix, but the fact there is not Xbox 360 version announced for Japan is telling. Square Enix does state how porting the game to the Xbox 360 should be easy.

More interesting tidbits: It's apparently hard to tell which looks better: Star Ocean 4 or Final Fantasy XIII.... More »
