Twenty-five Things Every Gamer Should Do Before They Die:

1. Beat Portal
Finishing Valve's mind-bending strategy game is necessary for two reasons. 1. It's more compelling to find out on your own that the cake is, in fact, a lie. 2. "Still Alive" rocks.

2. Buy a dedicated MAME cabinet -- or build your own.
There's a guilty pleasure in owning your own arcade unit, so why not treat yourself to a MAME arcade cabinet? You get bonus points if you build your own, creating the ultimate Bubble Bobble machine, complete with dedicated Bub and Bob artwork.

3. Get into a press conference
Even if you're not a member of the video game industry, you owe it to yourself to try to get into some kind of press conference. It's an experience, and if you're lucky, you learn something amazing before the rest of the world does -- like the Gears of War 2 announcement at GDC.

4. Visit an arcade in Japan
You NEED to see Japan arcades. So... More »

We received this tip via e-mail today: Jan70 (an Administrator) of CDFreaks.com has reported that the Lite-On DH-401S drive can read Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) game discs!

Sure, we've been dumping PS3 images since 6 days after the U.S. launch HERE, however, the big difference is that now users won't have to do it through Linux nor via PS3 SAK anymore... providing they own a Lite-On DH-401S drive.

Of course this doesn't mean they are playable on retail PS3 consoles though (like Linux/SAK image dumps, the PS3 sees the media as a data disc instead of a game disc).

VERY nice find Jan70, and below are a few screenshots and a directory layout for Lost Planet!

The Good: Universal plug-and-play (UPnP) application; works with all three video game consoles and other IP-enabled devices; no real limits to how much content you can accumulate with the software

The Bad: Graphical user-interface isn't the sleekest; learning curve might be intimidating at first, particularly when it comes to Web content; still no Mac or Linux support.

The Verdict: Bringing all that PC and Web content to your TV at the same time.

One of the biggest unknowns for someone who owns both a computer and next-gen video game console is that the two devices can talk to each other. You just need the right software to bridge them together.

TVersity is a well-known application among those who've shown a real interest in utilizing the IP-enabled features that are built into their game consoles. The software makes it easy to stream video and audio files you have stored on your computer, so that you can watch or listen to them on ... More »

We published an article a few weeks back called Microsoft in GTA IV Panic in which we detailed how the industry giant was stressing about the number of PS3 consoles the release of GTA IV would ship over Xbox 360s.

We argued that this was evident in the way Microsoft had gone about marketing the Xbox 360 version of the game. We also pointed out how Sony had, it appeared, done very little in response (you’ll have to read it for the full explanation).

Now we know why.

As you have no doubt read, it has come to light that a new version of the PS3 will be made available in time for the launch of GTA IV. It is the 40GB model of the console, but it comes bundled with GTA IV. This is a big, big deal. Especially as the package doesn’t cost any more money than the unbundled version of the console.

The deal is only officially announced for a UK release, but we’ve been given the tip-off that Australia will receive the deal too… in fact ... More »

Tut, tut. Walton Street market in Hull is the location of the latest raid by Trading Standards to show up a huge quantity of pirated DS games destined for sale to the public.

The haul was massive, turning up discs ELSPA forensic experts have apparently never seen before in the UK. Some 85,000 discs, marked 'Volume 9 DS Games', were seized in total and, it transpired, each held 200 current DS games.

That's about £6,000's worth of games on one disc.

"Piracy costs the games industry dear – just like that of any other entertainment industry," John Hillier, the force for justice who heads up ELSPA's crime unit, said while high-fiving his team (we assume). "Making good and inventive games is an expensive and creative process, with some titles today costing £20m or more to develop."

Well, not DS games, arguably, but we take his point.

"When a pirate sells illegally copied games they undermine the viability of our industry. T... More »

Earlier last week, one of the PS3 Devs sent his PS3 Debug/TEST unit off to another resident Dev (who also successfully did a PS3 Retail Flash dump early last year) to have the PS3 Flash dumped.

Well, it has been done! In an amazing feat taking all of 10 minutes, Courier pulled the two PS3 NAND Flash chips from the PS3 TEST and dumped them. Nothing like a hot air rework station in the hands of a professional!

So, the PS3 TEST Flash has been dumped! We also had a chance to do a preliminary analysis on it as we have seen and catalogued nearly 15 seperate PS3 Retail Flash dumps- and there is only (1) constant string in the section we are examining in all of them.

But in the PS3 TEST, it differs!!

More information will be posted soon, but the plan is now to replace said data on a Retail PS3 system, and by doing so modifying its identity to pass the update verification so t... More »

Update: CJPC has now publically posted the FULL PS3 Home Links for those who wish to further experiment.

Shortly following the earlier Site News from xtianoPL detailing PlayStation@Home working, but you can't play! we have a follow-up courtesy of rda990... According to THIS post (and also the pics/video below) he can play in PS3 Home now without being invited into the BETA program, however, there are no other users active he states as follows: I am the only one there. I can't see anyone there, it's like me being the last man on earth. I haven't seen anyone yet, so far I have been in the (I think its) something Squar- the theather, and right now I'm in the bowling alley.

Update: beefmanbeefer has confirmed it to be working with PS3 Firmware 2.20, however, based on reports it appears it doesn't work with lower Firmware versions.

He also shared a video (below) and states: Here is PS3 Home BETA crashing, what I do in the video is this: First I try to connect to the servers and it fails. Then I press X to try to connect again, and almost simultaneously I press the PS button and go to quit. It then says please wait and then the ps3 finally crashes when you hear the 2 beeps.

Hi, My name is Krystian and my english is bad, that's all about me :)

I found some interesting thing when I was 'playing' with PS3.ProxyServer. I replaced some XML files, and now I can install PlayStation@Home public BETA Trial from PLAYSTATION@Network servers in XMB.

I think it's to prepare for real open BETA, and th... More »
