Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates noted during the Japan-Windows Digital Lifestyle Consortium, held in Tokyo on May 7, 2008, that the Redmond company was "hard at work" by his own measure on the next iteration of the Windows client referred to as Windows 7.

The product number practice coming to replace the traditional codename policy is the work of Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, and so is the deadening silence surrounding the operating system.

However, bits and pieces of Windows 7 slipping through the tight grip around the platform and its development process do exist. Case in point: a new video demonstration of a leaked copy of Windows 7 embedded below.

The author claims that the Windows 7 video highlights "some of the new features [including] redesigned Windows Explorer with 2-panel option, FTP/SFTP locations, a common folder with keyboard shor... More »

There are but scarce details pointing the direction in which Microsoft is taking the development of Windows 7, and the operating system, for that matter.

Nevertheless, if Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates is to be believed, Windows 7 is going to be less of a resource hog than its predecessor, although such a comparison can only be speculated upon and was not actually stated.

On May 7, 2008, one day after the Redmond company dropped Windows XP SP3 via Windows Update and the Download Center, Gates was in Tokyo, Japan, at the Windows Digital Lifestyle Consortium and he mentioned the fact that there was a focus in making Windows 7 play well with less physical system memory.

"I'm very excited about the work being done there. The ability to be lower power, take less memory, be more efficient, and have lots more connections up to the mobile phone, so those scenarios connect up well to make it a great platform for the best gaming that can be done, t... More »

Sumitomo Chemical Co. said Friday that in 2009, it plans to launch the production and sales of large-screen organic electroluminescence display panels for use in televisions of 40 inches or larger.

President Hiromasa Yonekura said his company is considering forming alliances for the development of such organic panels.

EL panels are thinner than liquid display panels and consume less power.

Sumitomo Chemical is developing so-called macromolecule-type organic EL panels. Because these can be produced through an ink-jet printing process, it is possible to lower production costs and make large displays, a company spokesman said.

First of all, readers of our Forums know (with the assistance of our Members) we have recently been doing research into the PS3 RCO file format.

Note that it is different than that on a PSP, however, contains similarities as well. We have received a few questions as to "why" we want to examine the files... it's for a few reasons. First off- We are all curious! Secondly, the RCO files, in support with other files, enable/disable "links" to PS3 XMB options.

In related news, we have now accessed the PS3 Flash's FileSystem, and among other things (to be posted in Part 2 or 3 of this article) it contains a folder called "ps1emu".

What is it for? We found out! Inside the ps1emu folder, upon the insertion of a PS2 disc, a file is copied there by the name of "ps1_rom.bin". Oddly enough, it is actually the custom made PS2's BIOS for th... More »

Bioware's highly acclaimed and formerly XBox 360 exclusive RPG Mass Effect is fast approaching its release on the PC. Most PC gamers were undoubtedly pleased to hear about enhanced graphics, faster load times, and a re-designed menu system; but it's likely that fewer were happy to hear about the evil digital rights management that will be unscrupulously bundled with the game.

Like an increasing number of PC games nowadays, Mass Effect will require an online activation when it is installed. This has been common practice ever since Half-Life 2. But Mass Effect will also "phone home" every 10 days to make sure the key is valid, and it will carry a three-install limit. This has set many message boards afire with rants about "draconian" DRM and people threatening to pirate the game precisely because of the DRM.

It's times like this that I wonder why people are so adamantly opposed to DRM. It's worth noting that piracy came first; if people didn't steal their game... More »

Yesterday I posted a thread in the PlayStation 3 Chat Forum on behalf of the resident PS3 Devs who have been working steadily towards the ultimate goal of unlocking the PS3's full potential. Up until now, much of what they have been doing has been quite technical and didn't require much end-user assistance.

Over the last 2-3 days they have made significant progress in multiple areas of the PS3 (which will be detailed in the Site News), however, they are now asking the PS3 community to "get out of your armchair" (see video below- the ball symbolizes the PS3, the goal is unsigned code, and the community are in the chairs). How can you help? Check the Forums daily: [PS3 Dev Request]: Have a PSP and familiar with .RCO files?

After a federal judge awarded the MPAA a summary judgment against former BitTorrent tracker TorrentSpy late last year, the only question left was how much it would end up costing TorrentSpy's admins.

We've got our answer, and it comes in the form of a staggering $110 million damage award, or $30,000 in statutory damages for each of the nearly 3,700 files in the MPAA's complaint.

The MPAA announced the award in a press release (PDF) earlier today.

"This substantial money judgment sends a strong message about the illegality of these sites," said Dan Glickman, Chairman and CEO of the MPAA. "The demise of TorrentSpy is a clear victory for the studios and demonstrates that such pirate sites will not be allowed to continue to operate without facing relentless litigation by copyright holders."

In addition to the damage award, ... More »
