We recently purchased a new 80GB PlayStation 3 console, and our very own PS3 Dev Courier dissected his new system.

The item that peaked his interest the most was that it had one single 56-pin Flash chip, the S29GL128N90TFIR2, and was 128MB in size in contrast to older PS3 consoles utilizing dual (2x256MB) 48-pin chips totaling 512MB. So, he bought a new adapter, and some blank chips and proceeded to pull the 56-pin flash, and dumped it.

To our surprise, he was unable to dump more than 16MB of it! At first, we believed that the other blocks in the flash were protected via password, however there was something else brewing.

He took the 16MB dump that was made and flashed it onto a completly blank chip, and reinstalled it in the PS3.

To our surprise, it worked!

Now, if you recall, newer version PS3 Firmwares have ask... More »

Download: PS3 NAND Flow Rebuilder v3.50 BETA

NDT ;-)

From ReadMe: PS3 NAND FLOW REBUILDER v3.50 (including ECC Algo by RPS).

This tool allows to unscramble the blocks of a PS3 dumps ordering them in a way that the dumps become readable and extractable!

It also allow you to re-scramble back to the original order once you modified the data you wants, then from now on it include the ECC recalculation algorithm that was private until today.

It's for study and tests purposes, for experienced people only (devs) that this way can manage the files inside the flashes and patch sensible areas.

Well this week we have some exciting news that we hinted about last week.

First, a small technical explanation. We were not able to modify any data on the PS3's flash chips due to the ECC. The ECC is a checksum basically, that ensures whatever data is in the block is not changed or corrupted, and if it is it errors.

So, the problem was since when we tried to alter data, the ECC would then in turn be invalid, causing errors, making the system not boot.

We did develop a way around this, however, it was time consuming and quite slow. We used the PS3 to write data to the flash, then dump it, with its proper ECC, then rewrite to where we needed it. This would take hours on end! We were not able to regenerate the ECC since we did not know the proper algorithm.

But now, we can!!

After multiple tests done by NDT to see what the ECC... More »

Now the PlayStation 3 is a brilliant media center as it can pretty much play any format you would ever desire and the ease of copying files combined with accessible expandable storage makes it nearly perfect. Although as you might or might not already know the PlayStation 3 can not playback the standard HD format that is .mkv.

Matroska is slowly becoming the norm for high definition content and it’s a bit let down that Sony haven’t supported it. Luckily there is a fairly easy work around that you can use through the process of ReMuxing.

Remuxing in this instance takes the video and audio streams and combines them into one mixed file. This means that you’ll end up with a playable file but without any visible loss of quality. This file, which can be a .vob or .mpeg depending on your preference, can then be played back on your PlayStation 3 instantly. It’s also incredibly quick to remux your file to this format as I’ve rarely waited more than a couple ... More »

The long-promised PlayStation Home BETA expansion is rolling out soon. How soon? Sony announced today (linked above) that users who download a Home branded PS3 theme from the PS Store will be automatically entered in for possible participation in the ongoing BETA program... similar to what is being done for Japan.

Straight from Home director Jack Buser: Later today, the PLAYSTATION Store will be updated with a PlayStation Home theme. By downloading the theme, users are submitting an application to join the PlayStation Home BETA test community.

We will be using a variety of criteria including activity on the PLAYSTATION Network to determine eligibility for the BETA community. Existing Home BETA users worry not, as your accounts will transfer over to the extended BETA period.

Keep in mind that this all applies to North American folks... More »

Marcan writes: While Nintendo did reply to bushing’s open letter, he has not succeeded in establishing a conversation with an engineer about the issue. Furthermore, we have learned that they received and read at least two of the original three e-mails that were sent prior to the open letter, and decided not to reply (in fact, one of their replies was to one of the original e-mails, but only after the open letter was posted). Therefore, we can only conclude that they are not very interested in the issue.

As many of you may already know or have deduced, the bug in our open letter referred to a way of reading DVD-Rs (and Video DVDs) without the use of a modchip. Several people have investigated the bug independently, and they’ve gotten pretty close. However, we did discover an easier way of enabling this mode from homebrew, which, among other things, does not require any changes to IOS at all. This method is also relatively difficult to transform into some sort of ... More »
