215w ago - Alongside some videos (below) of it in action, at Microsoft's E3 2010 press conference Project Natal was officially renamed to Kinect, which is slated to launch on November 4, 2010.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer also confirmed that there will be 15 launch titles, and re-confirmed the hands-free motion control system will be compatible with all existing Xbox 360 consoles.

Kinect features motorized tilt function and a multi-array microphone, in addition to the camera and movement sensor... so it will swivel to follow you.

An engineer for Kinect took to the stage at E3 to show how 'natural' the device is. Within his presentation, he showed signing into his Xbox just by waving, and he could navigate the dash via speaking.

Finally, according to [Register or Login to view links], Microsoft's Kinect will be priced at $149.99 for those who wish to pre-order the device.

238w ago - Below is a Project Natal video, courtesy of MixxedbaggDotCom via YouTube, for XBox 360 from Microsoft's presentation at CES 2010 dubbed Concept to Reality.

It showcases Project Natal as a ground-breaking technology, where the body replaces ordinary controls.

During Microsoft's financial analyst briefing, President of Entertainment and Devices Division Robbie Bach was asked to explain who the targeted demographics are for Project Natal, due out this holiday.

Bach [Register or Login to view links] Natal was for everybody, including hardcore gamers expecting to play Halo: Reach, to quote:

"Take your hardcore gamer, they're going to love Natal,"Bach explained. "Now, they'll play a different style of game on that when they're doing it. When they play Halo: Reach, they might be back with their controller doing some very, you know, targeted things. But the style of game they will play will be different."

"But they will absolutely love Natal," he added.

Bach also stated that 70 percent of the publishers are now developing titles for Project Natal. The company revealed a modest listed of Natal developers during this past Tokyo Game Show. The list included names such as Bethesda, Capcom, Konami, and Ubisoft."

Lead XBox 360 Developer Exposes Project Natal Inner-workings

50°
238w ago - Natal's lead developer Alex Kipman has revealed that the upcoming peripheral will demand 10-15 per cent of the 360's CPU resources.

He added that the device can recognise any pose in just 10 milliseconds - quick enough to suggest that the final product won't suffer from lag issues.

And in under two-tenths of a second, says Kipman, Natal can recognise the body shape of a new user stepping in front of it.

To quote: "Natal has to work on the existing hardware without taking too much hardware processing away from the games developers," added Kipman in an interview with trade publication New Scientist.

The lead designer added that he and his team had collected "terabytes" of data of people making poses likely to appear during game play."

239w ago - Below is a video from GossipGamers.com (linked above) of what appears to be leaked XBox 360 footage of Half-Life 2 being played on Microsoft's upcoming system Project Natal.

It comes courtesy of nutcrackr via YouTube, as it seems someone secretly leaked out the clip.

This is most likely early footage of the beta testing for a FPS game on the Natal and of course, there is no confirmed source where the video came from so take it as you like.

To quote from the video's caption: "Brief clip of Project Natal for Half-Life 2. Situated in Isaac Kleiner's Lab, it shows some movement and turning with hand gestures and also some interaction with the teleporters.

This video looks to be in the alpha stage."

Project Natal XBox 360 Launch Details Leaked from Microsoft Tour

50°
246w ago - Today MCVUK.com (linked above) is reporting that XBox 360 Project Natal launch details have leaked from a Microsoft Tour of UK publishers and studios.

According to the leaked information, the controller-free XBox 360 camera will be released worldwide in November, 2010 with five million units to ship for launch day.

To quote: Microsoft is planning to manufacture 5m units for day one release, with a mix of console and camera plus solus SKUs expected.

The device should cost under £50 when sold solo. One publishing source says Microsoft is "trying to get as close as possible to 'impulse buy'". Another even says the camera could even retail for just £30.

14 games are being readied for launch. This summer Xbox studios boss Phil Spencer told MCV the 360 still 'hasn't peaked'.

"When Natal arrives it will feel like a new generation has come," he said. "I see it like the launch of 360 in November '05. Consumers don't want another $400 box right now."
