257w ago - VGChartz.com (linked above) reports that Sony PS3 worldwide sales have now crossed the 30 million threshold, which many are attributing to several factors including the late August PlayStation 3 Slim release, the $299 PS3 price cut and recent Final Fantasy XIII sales.

Approximately five months ago, the PS3 hit the 24 million point, which means in a little less than half a year six million PS3 entertainment systems were sold!

These latest weekly sales numbers show that PlayStation 3 has reached another milestone, and that Sony has indeed made great progress in closing the gap between PS3 and the Xbox 360 console.

To quote: "Thanks to Final Fantasy XIII, the Slim, the price cut, and new marketing, the PlayStation 3 has not only shattered expectations once again, it is ahead of it's closest competitor in EU, sells 1 million units Worldwide, and has now crossed the 30 million unit milestone! 296w ago - Worldwide sales of the Nintendo Wii games console have topped 50 million, the company's president Satoru Iwata stated at an industry conference in San Francisco.

This means the Wii is now the fastest-selling games console in history, surpassing Sony's PlayStation 2.

To quote: Earlier this year the Japanese computer games console maker predicted demand for the Wii console would eventually slow as the rise of the yen undermined the value of sales to the United States and Europe.

Satoru Iwata, president of the company, said he hoped the economic slowdown would lead to innovation and creativity. He told the conference, attended by many computer game software experts, that he believed "anything is possible".

He said: "The great depression in the 1930s resulted in the jet engine, TV and chocolate chip cookies. The future of video games is in your hands and I can't wait for you to show us your surprises."

Mr Iwata said that Nintendo's hand-held DS console had shipped 100m units around the world.

Nintendo Wii has more female and older fans than previous games systems because if offers programmes games like virtual tennis and playing musical instruments as well as the usual driving and shooting games.

"Almost no one expected them to reach...

Sony PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 Worldwide Sales Equal in 2008

100°
304w ago - Sony's PlayStation 3 sold less in the third quarter of 2008 (ie. the Oct-Dec holiday season) than in 2007, but the strength of the console's earlier sales did it proud, shipping 10.77 million in 2008 (up from 2007's 8.85 million).

In contrast, Microsoft's Xbox 360 had a huge holiday season, shipping around 6 million consoles worldwide (a record for the Xbox), but had a weaker sales period earlier in the year: the playing field has been levelled.

The PlayStation 3 shipped around 10.77 million and the Xbox 360 also shipped 10.8 million: a dead heat. As for life-time sales, the Xbox 360 is at 28.45 million and the PlayStation 3 at 21.35 million - a slightly tighter gap than Microsoft's announced 8 million.

On average the PlayStation 3 has sold 2.37 million units per quarter, in comparison to the Xbox 360's 2.18 million. Still without a PS3 price cut, Microsoft's console will surely pull away in 2009.

As for Nintendo's Wii, it's solidified first place by selling an outstanding 4.99 million units per quarter. Find the numbers below:
