Courtesy of Sierradev comes update v0.2 of the Nintendo Wii Homebrew Disc Channel today. Using the Homebrew Disc Channel, you can load homebrew programs from regular ISO9660 DVDs. It supports (sub)directories.

Note: the name Homebrew Disc Channel is actually wrong; the program was intended as either an add-on to the Wii Disc Channel or a separate channel, but due to the fact that BootMii will need an SD card to load, turning this program into anything other than a regular homebrew program will be useless in a couple of months.

The name will be changed at the next release to Homebrew Disc Loader.

Download: Wii Homebrew Disc Channel v0.2

Usage
- Rename programs to boot.dol and put them in separate (sub)directories on the DVD.
- Burn as ISO9660 DVD.
- Put disc in console and start program.
- Follow on-screen instructions.

There’s much more to the (also free) full game than just this level. Don’t forget to check out Mirror’s Edge, out now on PlayStation 3 and XBox 360.

Also of note, Electronic Arts is officially working with Borne Games on ME 2D.

The PlayStation 3 and PS2 were the only platforms that didn't receive a significant boost this week as the end-of-year climb finally begins.

The DS and PSP platforms are both up nearly 20k units, the 360 almost doubled last week's effort from 8k to 15.5k, and the Wii is up 10k units from the previous week.

Defying the weekly gains for every other platform, the PS3 sold only 17.4k units this week, exactly (for our purposes) what it sold last week. As we look for continued increases in hardware next week, will the PS3 be along for the ride?

Hardware:

- DS+ 107,423
- PSP 61,226
- Wii 35,298
- PS3 17,436
- 360 15,474
- PS2 5,281

Pop quiz: Which is the cheapest current-gen home console? If you said the $250 Nintendo Wii, you’d be wrong — it’s actually the $200 Xbox 360 Arcade, which eschews the hard drive, headset and premium cables of its Pro cousin to shed a full $100 off of the regular price.

But though the entry-level 80GB PlayStation 3 usually clocks in at nearly twice that last price — with “no plans” for a March price cut — a new Sony offer will put the PS3 in a very close third-place finish with its rivals. If you’re willing and able to sign up for the new Sony PlayStation credit card, you can get a PS3 shipped to your door for exactly $284.

While I would not advocate credit even if the US financial market wasn’t currently in death throes due to its mismanagem... More »

Console modder RDC has set out to make a slot-loading Xbox 360 by modifying an iMac DVD drive. He says its now functional and has provided a video of it.

To quote: Well, I figured I'd see how far I can get on this thing and have been wanting to take a stab at it for awhile but didn't feel like trashing a perfectly good slot loader drive to see if I could.

Then I remembered I had this little gem just sitting around doing nothing at all, figured I may as well use it for something besides dumpster filler..

Steve Demeter, a former banker who has created a game development house following the success of his first game called Trism.

The respective game earned the developer $250,000 in profits for just the first two months alone, as you'd expect, such figures and the democracy offered by the App Store has motivated him to pursue developing full-time.

To quote: It's also become a potential gold mine for entrepreneurs who create games for the device. Just ask Steve Demeter, developer of the popular puzzle game "Trism."

A former ATM software designer for a large bank, Demeter created "Trism" in his spare time and pitched it to Apple last spring. The company made the game available for download with the July launch of its App Store, an online provider of applications for its iPods and iPhones.

Priced at $5, "Trism" earned Demeter $250,000 in profits the first two months.

"It's done phenomenal business," said Demeter, 29, w... More »

So I said that the Twilight Hack was gone and probably wouldn’t be coming back. Good thing I left that probably in there.

Yes, they screwed up the anti-Twilight Hack check. Again.

There’s not much point in us publishing a detailed explanation on where the problems are this time around. It comes down to nothing remarkable anyway - just more stupid, silly bugs. They fixed some and added more. We didn’t look much this time because we thought that, well, they really couldn’t have screwed it up this time, could they?

Download: Twilight Hack v0.1-beta2 (Special 3.4 Edition)

As it turns out, you didn’t even have to look at the code to figure out that something was wrong. Someone tried to copy the Twilight Hack out of a 3.3 Wii and into a 3.4 Wii. Go ahead, try it. It doesn’t quite work (it crashes the game when used), but the save copies. Oops. Props to Krusty f... More »
