PCWorld reports today that security researchers have developed a way to partially crack the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption standard used to protect data on many wireless networks.

However, the attack does not however work with the WPA2 standard states Dragos Ruiu, the PacSec conference's organizer who will be discussing it next week in Tokyo.

To quote: "Everybody has been saying, 'Go to WPA because WEP is broken,'" Ruiu said. "This is a break in WPA."

If WPA is significantly compromised, it would be a big blow for enterprise customers who have been increasingly adopting it, said Sri Sundaralingam, vice president of product management with wireless network security vendor AirTight Networks.

Although customers can adopt Wi-Fi technology such as WPA2 or virtual private network software that will protect them from this attack, there are still may devices that connect to the network using WPA,... More »

Nintendo has unveiled a wireless router/bridge for sale (in Japan) that works to connect your Wii, DS and/or PC to the Internet.

Famitsu (linked above) has more picss of it, including a router/bridge switch. The router costs you ¥5,800 (US $53). No word on a release outside of Japan, although the Wi-Fi USB Connector has reportedly been discontinued, so it'd make sense to have this as a replacement.

The Wi-Fi Network Adaptor will be available via Nintendo Japan's Web site on September 18.

This appears to be good news for less tech-savvy folks, for which a majority of Nintendo's userbase generally consists of... although almost every standard router available works with both systems already.

Google is pressing the US government to allow the unlicensed frequencies of TV "white space" to be used for wi-fi.

The firm has written an open letter to regulators saying the US spectrum was a "once in a lifetime opportunity".

White space is unused blocks of frequencies in-between channels broadcast on analogue airwaves.

"The vast majority of viable spectrum in this country simply goes unused, or else is grossly underutilised," wrote Google's Richard Whitt in the letter.

"Unlike other natural resources, there is no benefit to allowing this spectrum to lie fallow," he added.

Google has said the white space could be used to bring "ubiquitous wireless broadband access to all Americans".

In the past TV broadcasters have opposed the use of white space, fearing it would cause interference with television programming.

But in its letter, Google urged the FCC to adopt a series of overlapping techno... More »

Apple's iPhone goes on sale in the UK and Germany on Friday with thousands expected to snap up the device.

Eager customers have begun queuing outside the Apple Store in Regent Street, London, despite the poor weather conditions.

But there are concerns that consumers are only able to use the phone with one mobile network.

In the UK the phone will only work on O2's network, while in Germany T-Mobile will support the device.

The phones can be unlocked for use on other networks but this voids the warranty and could break the device if software updates from Apple are loaded.

As many as 250,000 users in the US have unlocked the device using free and paid-for software to make the phone work on different networks, and to load third-party software not supported by Apple.

In London, friends Graham Gilbert and Nik Fletcher were the first to queue for the phone.

More holes have been picked in the security measure designed to protect the privacy and data of wi-fi users.

The latest attack lets criminals defeat firewalls and spy on where someone goes and what they do online.

It comes after a series of other attacks that, experts say, have left the basic protection in wi-fi comprehensively "broken".

But compatibility issues mean that many will have no alternative but to use the much weakened protection system.

The government is taking another look at the effect that wireless networks have on health.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced it will carry out "systematic" research into how wireless networks are being used.

The research will aim to establish average exposure to the low level radiation emitted by wi-fi access points and wireless links on computers.

The HPA said it expected the results of the research to be "reassuring".
