ModNation Racers Spotlight: 6 Reasons Why This Game Rocks!

50°
219w ago - SCEA Associate Product Marketing Manager Chuck Lacson has spotlighted 6 reasons today why ModNation Racers for PS3 and PSP rocks.

To quote: I'm uber-stoked that everyone will finally get their hands on [Register or Login to view links] TOMORROW on both PS3 and PSP!

Actually playing the final version of the game you've been working on for so many months is probably the best part of being in this incredible industry.

That's how I spent my weekend and that's when I was reminded of why I love playing this game (and why the Photo Mode rocks!).

#1 The Chuck Wagon

It's not sexy, it's not even that cool, but it's MINE. There is no feeling like making and racing your own kart, and it's 100% yours. Look out for this kart online, you'll both know who to aim your weapon at. If it passes you up, you'll know who just smoked you!

#2 Mini-Me

Some racers will make their favorite characters, some will think of some completely original creations of their own. But if you're like me, you will put yourself in the game so when you showboat, you can say, "THAT'S ME!"

#3 Bringing the Hurt (and avoiding it too!)

We've covered this subject in past blog posts,...

EA Podcast: Why More People Played Dead Space than Bought It

300°
265w ago - EA's Glen Schofield, studio manager for the company's Dead Space team at Visceral Games, appeared on the second episode of EA's official [Register or Login to view links] to talk games, mention that Dead Space had co-op during some of its development cycle and explain the company's take on Dead Space's sales.

To quote: We looked at how many we sold. We also looked at – we didn't have online which is one of the big features that you need to have to kind of keep it in the house a little bit longer these days.

But then we also did studies on sort of how many unique users there were on the PSN network and Xbox Live. And realized, you know what, there's over three million people that have played Dead Space. Maybe we've only sold 1.5 million or whatever the number is.

But there's something there because that means that, ok, there were a lot of used sales. So there's a lot of people when I go out and talk to [them]... it seems that everybody has played it or heard about it or whatever.

I think it's bang for the buck is really what we're looking at right now these days and going: 'OK, we came out at 60 bucks and so did some of these other games that had online that maybe people could play...

Rant: Why Do Developers Screw-up PlayStation 3 Games?

400°
268w ago - We've all heard the excuse before; "The PS3 is too difficult to develop for." One thing Sony's Playstation 3 is well-known for is its powerful hardware, which boasts (among other things) a Blu-ray disc format and a Cell Microprocessor as its CPU.

For those of you that don't know what all that means, all you need to know is that it is very, very powerful.

But while that's all well and good, there's also a downside to it. The PS3 is complex - more complex than every other console currently on the market.

To quote: Some developing companies have had problems developing games for the PS3, and have even gone so far as to not develop for it altogether. In the past, game consoles have had the same problems with game development (the Sega Saturn comes to mind), but is this really the same case with the PS3? No, it's not.

The first thing that we need to take a look at is the multiplatform games. In the past, some games that have been released on multiple platforms haven't always been as good on PS3. Prime examples of this are Madden NFL 08, F.E.A.R, and the infamous [Register or Login to view links], which all suffered from similar issues with framerate, load times, and glitches.

Now look at other games, like Grid, Bioshock, ES:IV Oblivion,...

Valve Explains Why They Avoid the 'Too Technical' PS3 Console

550°
268w ago - How come we've yet to see Valve develop something for the PS3? Being one of the better game developers out there, you'd think they'd be one of the first to get in line tweaking with the PS3's hardware.

Apparently, that's not the case as they seem to find it too complicated.

Tom Leonard, Valve Game Designer, had this to say when asked about this very issue over at E3:

"The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward. We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform... I didn't come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish.

I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun."

Why Left 4 Dead Fans Should Calm Down About Left 4 Dead 2

100°
269w ago - It's pretty clear that a lot of Left 4 Dead fans are very upset about Valve's surprise reveal during E3 2009 about Left 4 Dead 2.

The game's new official [Register or Login to view links] are full of comments saying basically, "Valve's releasing a sequel too quickly for us; this should be a free content update for the original game."

To quote: As Valve's Doug Lombardi told us during our play time with a build of the game this past week, "This is something new for us." By "new" he meant that this time Valve is not waiting for years to release a commercial follow-up to one of their major games. (Half-Life 2: Episode 3, hello?)

Many fans are not happy because they feel the original game (still a top 10 best selling PC game in retail stores months after release) will be forgotten now with Left 4 Dead 2's announcement.

Again, Lombardi assured us at E3 that is not the case, promising that the first game will still be getting updates and new content (although exactly what they have planned is still a mystery). Lombardi also told Rock Paper Shotgun that any maps made for Left 4 Dead's SDK will work for Left 4 Dead 2.

Finally there's the fact that Valve has made purchasing Left 4 Dead pretty easy since its October...
