LittleBigPlanet, going by its popularity, is Sony Computer Entertainment or SCE’s biggest release this year for the PS3.
Inevitably, it hasn’t had a conflict-free travel down its release path (the beta key frenzy, for instance) but plucky Sackboy and his platforming marvel has never included any controversy. So when SCEE declares its delaying LBP by a few days because:
“During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence this may have caused”
You have to wonder whether this speaks of a plain old misunderstanding or honest-to-goodness fear arising from ignorance.
According to tradition, desecration of the sacred book of Qur’an is considere... More »

The PlayStation Portable handheld gaming system was first released in the United States on March 24, 2005, after being released in Japan the previous December. More importantly, the PSP found its way into my hands on December 25, 2007, in its second form, the PSP Slim/Lite.
I quickly invested days into the Internet, scouring for the greatest homebrew software that would enhance my portable system without corrupting and reducing it to its useless “brick” form. Half a year later, my PSP now acts as my GPS, a tutor in three different languages (French, Italian, German), a soon-to-be cell phone replacement (the wonders of Skype are highly underrated), and a digital photo album; not to mention a port of PC’s SCUMMVM, allowing me to relive all my Monkey Island fan service memories.
More surprising than the device’s versatility, was the fact that I seemed to be the only one in my city to have one. Sure, on a rare occasion I would spot another user on the bu... More »

Bioware's highly acclaimed and formerly XBox 360 exclusive RPG Mass Effect is fast approaching its release on the PC. Most PC gamers were undoubtedly pleased to hear about enhanced graphics, faster load times, and a re-designed menu system; but it's likely that fewer were happy to hear about the evil digital rights management that will be unscrupulously bundled with the game.
Like an increasing number of PC games nowadays, Mass Effect will require an online activation when it is installed. This has been common practice ever since Half-Life 2. But Mass Effect will also "phone home" every 10 days to make sure the key is valid, and it will carry a three-install limit. This has set many message boards afire with rants about "draconian" DRM and people threatening to pirate the game precisely because of the DRM.
It's times like this that I wonder why people are so adamantly opposed to DRM. It's worth noting that piracy came first; if people didn't steal their game... More »
BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka, BioShock's Ken Levine and Harmonix VP Greg LoPiccolo gathered at the DICE Summit to discuss the development and implementation of narrative in the context of their games, all of which are reputed for their strong story element.
Ken Levine began by contrasting the narrative style of his BioShock with the past works of Muzyka's BioWare team, known for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur's Gate and, most recently, Mass Effect. "Personally, I'm way too lazy to write that many words," Levine said.
He explained, "Our goal was to tell the story in the world, visually, and make it optional for the player, so the gamer could experience the game on very different levels... I think it's great that the industry is starting to figure out how to tell narratives in very different ways."
Muzyka agreed that the increasing importance of narrative is exciting. More than that, he said, "The definition of narrative is continually evo... More »
