It was only meant to be a prototype. But 40 years after the computer mouse first scrolled its way into the public consciousness, new touch-screen technology could be about to consign the mouse to the annals of history.

The computer mouse was the creation of Doug Engelbart and his team at the Stanford Research Institute in California, who needed a simple way of controlling their computers. The result was a carved wooden block mounted on wheels, with a long cable trailing out the back. One researcher nicknamed it a mouse, and the moniker stuck.

"We thought that when it had escaped out to the world it would have a more dignified name," said Mr Engelbart. "But it didn't."

The mouse made its debut at a presentation in San Francisco in 1968 to show off a working network computer system. Before the invention of the mouse, people working on computers used a light pen, similar to those wielded by radar operators during the war, to navigate around... More »

Note: There are spoilers about Resistance 2's story and ending contained within this rumor.

Resistance 3 rumors are already surfacing on the Internet. Apparently, the follow up will be announced in February 2009 along with the first bunch of screens and solid details on the game with a view to the game being released November 10th exclusively on the PlayStation 3.

To quote: Today I’ve received news on a new rumor, this time about Resistance 3, yes you heard me right, RESISTANCE 3. I know that Resistance 2 has just been released in UK/Europe today and this may seem premature, but this news comes from the same person who gave me the rumor on the MGS4 Expansion Pack, which became a hot topic of discussion.

This rumor suggests that SCEA and Insomniac Games will officially announce Resistance 3 in February 2009 along with the first collection of screenshots and the first details of the game, the rumor also suggests that you will play as Cappe... More »

It feels as though I’ve been writing about PlayStation Home for years. I haven’t, it’s only been months in reality, but with its release being delayed constantly, known and unknown development issues, and questions still remaining, it feels like the service has been a long time coming. Which makes any official word from Sony very interesting indeed.

Jack Buser, the director of PlayStation Home, recently sat down with IGN to discuss Home. He talks about why we should care about it, what experience it will give us, and what is it with all these delays.

He explains that Home is going to be a place to meet friends online, to find gamers of the same skill level and into the same games as you. It’s going to replace the arcade as the place to make new friends and share your hobby with them. All in all, Sony is excited about Home, and so, apparently should you be.

Great, so where is it and when can we, the great unwashed who haven’t been ... More »

The PlayStation 3 and PS2 were the only platforms that didn't receive a significant boost this week as the end-of-year climb finally begins.

The DS and PSP platforms are both up nearly 20k units, the 360 almost doubled last week's effort from 8k to 15.5k, and the Wii is up 10k units from the previous week.

Defying the weekly gains for every other platform, the PS3 sold only 17.4k units this week, exactly (for our purposes) what it sold last week. As we look for continued increases in hardware next week, will the PS3 be along for the ride?

Hardware:

- DS+ 107,423
- PSP 61,226
- Wii 35,298
- PS3 17,436
- 360 15,474
- PS2 5,281

WipEout HD is hard. If you've played the game, you probably know that and, if the newest patch is anything to go by, the developers at Studio Liverpool have also realized this.

The new WipEout HD patch v1.20 reportedly makes gaming life a whole lot easier. The patch allows you to change the difficulty setting within campaign mode to novice, skilled or elite just like in other modes. In turn, this changes the medal requirements which makes completing things a much easier task.

To quote: Updating the game to version 1.20, which will happen as soon as you start the game, will make getting medals in campaign mode a lot easier. You can now change the difficulty setting within campaign mode to novice, skilled or elite, just like in other modes. This changes the medal requirements, making completing the game a much simpler experience.

It also means the difficulty ramp for the game is far less steep, as you can blitz through on novice, then change up to... More »

Samsung showed off an impressive Flexible OLED mobile phone at this year's FPD International show.

The phone opens up to reveal a large OLED screen that folds in the middle (remnicent of a Nintendo DS when open).

Hopefully we'll see a portable gaming console with one of these screens someday soon!

Video is below, and comes courtesy of JPNtackle via YouTube.

Cheers!
