PlayStation Home director Jack Buser was recently asked if Home is definitely going to launch this year. "It's imminent. We haven't announced a specific date but we will make a public announcement." he replied.

Buser also went onto say that Home is going to be a very different experience maybe, six, twelve months down the line compared to what you see on day one.

To quote from the Gamasutra interview:

And Home is definitely going to launch this year?

JB: it's imminent. We haven't announced a specific date but we will make a public announcement.

It has suffered many delays already, of course.

JB: When you think about PlayStation Home you really have to think of it, as I've said before, as a massive undertaking. We've been trying to create something that really has never been done before.

But we're now at the point where we've created the platform, third-parties are creating content for t... More »

Ninety per cent of the young people who seek treatment for compulsive computer gaming are not addicted.

So says Keith Bakker the founder and head of Europe's first and only clinic to treat gaming addicts.

The Smith & Jones Centre in Amsterdam, has treated hundreds of young gamers since the clinic opened in 2006. But the clinic is changing its treatment as it realises that compulsive gaming is a social rather than a psychological problem.

Using traditional abstinence-based treatment models the clinic has had very high success rate treating people who also show other addictive behaviours such as drug taking and excessive drinking.

But Mr Bakker believes that this kind of cross-addiction affects only 10% of gamers. For the other 90% who may spend four hours a day or more playing games such as World of Warcraft, he no longer thinks addiction counselling is the way to treat these people.

DreamStream to employ military-grade encryption to secure Royal Digital Media's new optical media format, which exceeds Blu-ray's HD capabilities.

Press Release: Los Angeles (PRWEB) - DreamStream has signed on to encrypt Royal Digital Media's new optical media format. The agreement will allow RDM to employ DreamStream's military-strength encryption in the copyright protection of their high-definition discs.

The deal marks the first time a military-grade encryption has been implemented in the copyright protection of commercial motion picture discs.

"DreamStream and RDM's technologies align perfectly, as they both rest exponentially beyond the standards currently being employed," said DreamStream's Chief Development Officer Ulf Diebel, in a statement issued at the signing in Paris.

DreamStream is the first company to implement a 2,048-bit encryption in consumer media. AES encryption, used in Sony's Blu-ray discs, relies on only a 128... More »

If this is remotely true, the Internet’s going to break. This post on VGChartz reckons New Xbox Experience will launch on September 25 alongside what sounds like a comedic amount of game announcements.

To quote: "Microsoft will release a dozen new demos after the launch. There will be four new downloadable pieces of content a preview of the GTA DLC. A Mass Effect expansion. Portal and a free map pack for Halo 3.

Microsoft will unveil twelve new games never seen before that will be exclusive or first on the 360. Strangely enough the author only gives out code names for said games. Though they speculate that among them is Assassins Creed 2, Mass Effect 2, a new Conker title, a Rare shooter new franchise, and two new Halo titles."

Seriously, this is highly likely to be complete bollocks. Read it, though. If it’s a lie, it’s a great one. The codewords for the games are priceless.

Ryan Payton (hats, in tow) has left Kojima Productions. The Assistant Producer spearheaded a more Western approach to controls for Metal Gear Solid 4, making the game far more approachable and much tighter than the previous installment. He also helped warm the MGS4 team up to more Western developed games like Gears of War as well. Why did he leave and what's next? His answers after the jump.

Why did you leave Konami and Kojima Productions?

Back when I joined Kojima Productions in 2005, I hit the ground running and didn't stop until we shipped Metal Gear Solid 4. Then, for the first time in three years, I wasn't working on any games and I had a three month vacation ahead of me. I went back home to my family's place in Washington state and literally three weeks after MGS4 launched we were hit with some pretty heavy news concerning my mom.

I don't think I need to go into details, but all of this has reminded me about how important fami... More »

The Soul Calibur franchise has made its mark outside of arcades, due in large part to the console-specific cameo characters. It worked with Link and Spawn, and the newest iteration is gathering acclaim for the inclusion of Vader and Yoda.

With the popularity of digital downloads, however, the prospect of adding even more beloved characters is entirely possible. Here's 12 famous gaming, movie, and comic book characters that would fit the fighting franchise perfectly.

12- Marcus Fenix: Why not bring a gun to a sword fight? Our pitch--in the midst of a massive battle against the Locust, Marcus Fenix runs out of bullets and calls for the Hammer of Dawn at the same time as the tremendously incompetent Damon Baird. When the streams cross, it creates a vortex that leads to 16th Century. Without any ammo, Marcus is forced to rev up his Chainsaw Bayonet and slice up his opponents in order to find a weapon that can kill the Queen for good.

11- Toxie: No ... More »
