It’s me, Travis, again. You know, the Senior Producer of PAIN. I want to thank everyone for responding so well to my first PLAYSTATION Blog post. It was the first time I had the opportunity to explain PAIN to more than a few people at a time.

It’s always hard to describe a game that doesn’t play like anything currently on the market. That’s a good thing. No, it’s a GREAT thing. Now that we are close to releasing the first PAIN Theme (Downtown), I get to sit back and enjoy other PLAYSTATION 3 gamers bringing the PAIN. Wait... no I don’t.

PAIN is an evolving game and how it grows will largely depend on what people like you want to see (and play). I wish that I could tell you what plans we have for the next theme, but in the meantime, I can tell you that some of your responses to my first blog post made my arguments to management more “convincing.”

Imagine me screaming, “LOOK HOW MANY PEOPLE SAY WE SHOULD SHOOT (THIS PERSON) OUT O... More »

With Unreal Tournament 3 available now in stores, PSU.com wanted to get in a quick afterthoughts interview with Jim Brown, lead level designer at Epic Games. The interview touches a few topics such as PlayStation Home, online clans, and mod support for the PS3.

PSU: Unless you go all the way back to the original Unreal title, the series has always been known for its multiplayer action. What were some of the deciding factors in adding a complete single-player experience this time around and what are you doing to make sure that it doesn’t feel like offline deathmatch with bots?

Jim Brown: Hey, I had a BLAST playing Unreal 1 multiplayer, too! That’s what got me into the industry…

We’ve found that a huge portion of our player-base never goes online with UT, and we want them to have just as great an experience as everyone else. So, to a large degree, we actually do want the Unreal Tournament 3 single player campaign to play like the online mu... More »

Now that the year 2007 is nearly over and with 2008 just around the corner we really need to think about something. If you are interested in the console war at all you may know the Sony PlayStation 3 is the most expensive console out there (yes the X360 Elite is $50 more than the 40GB PS3, but the 80GB PS3 is also $50 more than the elite) and because of this the PS3 is in last place in overall sales (there are also more reasons why, but this is one of the main reasons why).

Now this does not mean that the PS3 is not selling anything at all, this only means that all of the PS3’s that have been sold from around the world have not been matched with the Nintendo Wii’s and the Microsoft Xbox 360’s. Right now the PS3 has sold 7.77M, the Wii has sold 17.07M, and the Xbox 360 has sold 14.07M (according to VGChartz). Now, if things keep going this way, they might lose this war.

Another thing that is the cause of being last is that the PS3 has had many exclusive... More »

The 360 blew it's load last year and now it's the Playstation 3's turn. Only a few weeks into the new year and the PS3 has quickly become THE system for gamers to own. A couple of us here at the Pail sat down and figured out how and why the PS3 is going to kick ass in 2008.

Blu-ray Movies

You could say that it’s all Warner’s fault. With their announcement of going exclusively to Blu-ray, Paramount and Universal started shifting in their chairs. Now the two companies are using their escape clause to leave HD-DVD behind; and all hope for HD-DVD with them. Blu-ray is now the unofficial winner of the hi-def movie format war. Sony was taking a risk on putting a blu-ray player in the PS3, and it paid off.

Blu-ray Games

Blu-ray discs aren’t just used for movies. The PS3 game discs also use the format. This allows developers to store more content on the disc. With all the hi-def graphics and audio gamers are demanding now, more stora... More »

It's well known that we're Warhawk fans, so any time we get a chance to check out updates for the game, we're ready to take to the skies. At GDC 2008, we were able to talk to Dylan Jobe via PlayStation Eye video chat, and also get a chance to run through the upcoming version 1.3 and Operation: Broken Mirror booster pack.

Dylan pointed out that the key elements from his initial PlayStation Blog have been implemented. That means that new paint schemes and insignias from the Warhawk contest have been fully integrated into the game, along with a host of VOIP changes for players headed up by the ability to toggle between push to talk and open mic settings. Home integration has been coming along as well, so players will be able to pull out their virtual PSP and immediately create and launch into a game of Warhawk.

Speaking of Home, Jobe mentioned that they would love to support trophies within Home, although if they are integrated into the game, he would like to s... More »

MTV's Multiplayer got a sneaky peek at a new feature in Playstation Home which will allow for players to receive trophies.

For example, trophies could be given out for participating in min-games such as bowling. In an upcoming build of the development kit, companies will be able to start desiging trophies themselves.

To quote: The panel itself revealed precious little more about “Home” that hasn’t already been leaked from gamers in the beta or announced by Sony. We did, however, get an interesting look at some example trophies that gamers could theoretically collect for participating in some of the mini-games (i.e. bowling) scattered in “Home”’s virtual spaces.

In an upcoming update to the Home Development Kit (HDK), companies will have a chance to start modeling these trophies themselves and playing with them in “Home.”

Much of the presentation was spent looking at ways of developing and implementing objects into ... More »

With the recent announcement that EGM’s next cover story will feature Socom Confrontation, one can’t help but get excited for the game, especially after it seemed to have fallen off the map last winter in terms of announcements and news.

The Socom franchise has been the backbone to Sony’s online service since late 2002, providing players with competitive gameplay and extensive clan support. To help fill the void between what’s rumored to be Zipper Interactive’s next entry into the Socom world, Slant Six has promised to give fan’s a chance to relive that classic Socom feel, which was undoubtedly absent from both Socom 3 and Combined Assault, by bringing back old maps such as Crossroads and focusing solely on the online multiplayer aspect of Confrontation.

However to the fan, that’s easier said than done. Here are five features that will make or break Socom Confrontation.

1) Ignore Matchmaking

Unless you’ve downloaded the expansion pack to the downloadable PS3 twin-stick shooter “Super Stardust HD,” you will have a hard time convincing me that it’s not the most graphically-impressive game on Sony’s machine.

And, yes, I’ve played “GTA IV.” I’ve seen “Killzone 2.” But nothing quite blows me away like a level of Endless on the $5 “SSHD” expansion called “Solo Pack.”

What exactly have the game’s Finnish developers at Housemarque accomplished?

They’ve doubled the base game’s output of 10,000 objects on the screen.
They believe they’ve almost maxed the PS3 graphics chip.
And now they’re thinking about making music-based levels and revealing to Multiplayer other expansions they have in the works.
Read on for more on all of that, from a developer that is pushing the PS3 to impressive lengths …

Multiplayer: The new add-on for “SSHD” has produced the most dazzling dis... More »

Last week I took a look at the Xbox 360's Live service and went over the five items I felt that Microsoft needed to look at in order to stay relevant in the online service realm. Obviously when you start talking about consoles, people are passionate and there were a number of large comments with some great points.

Now I am going to look at the PlayStation Network (PSN) and the five points they need to look at to stay competitive especially since they are new to this online space. I will start by saying something that will probably have people screaming that I am a fanboy. When looking at the PSN I had a tough time coming up with five points they need to change/look at... seriously.

Sony has been very diligent about listening to feedback and enhancing their online offering. They revamped their store, normalized pricing, offered free media and stepped up their content on a weekly basis. They are really trying to make this a very compelling and competitive onli... More »
