Courtesy of Sierradev comes update v0.2 of the Nintendo Wii Homebrew Disc Channel today. Using the Homebrew Disc Channel, you can load homebrew programs from regular ISO9660 DVDs. It supports (sub)directories.

Note: the name Homebrew Disc Channel is actually wrong; the program was intended as either an add-on to the Wii Disc Channel or a separate channel, but due to the fact that BootMii will need an SD card to load, turning this program into anything other than a regular homebrew program will be useless in a couple of months.

The name will be changed at the next release to Homebrew Disc Loader.

Download: Wii Homebrew Disc Channel v0.2

Usage
- Rename programs to boot.dol and put them in separate (sub)directories on the DVD.
- Burn as ISO9660 DVD.
- Put disc in console and start program.
- Follow on-screen instructions.

A British company may have won the contract to design and build the next-generation graphics processor for the PSP2. Imagination Technologies Group announced in a press release this week that the company has signed a license agreement with a new partner, “a major consumer electronics company.”

Industry sources say that the partner is almost certainly Sony, and that the SGX55x graphics chip will be used in the upcoming PSP2.

The secrecy on the part of Imagination Technologies makes sense, because Sony is understandably unwilling to announce its plans for a PSP successor just yet. Imagination's PowerVR MBX chip is already being used in the Apple iPhone, so Sony finds itself in good company with this manufacturer.

The SGX55x chip promises to be much more powerful than what is currently found in the PSP. At the moment, the PSP uses a... More »

Andrew Weymes (aka MrWeymes) says Nintendo obviously went in another direction, deviating from what gamers expect from a next generation console.

I'm sure most gamers assumed that every 5 or 6 years, we would get an upgrade of our current console with a slightly reworked controller, better graphics, and more features such as online capabilities, and Blu Ray.

Sony, and Microsoft knew what was expected of them, and delivered. I don't think that many people thought that the Nintendo "Revolution" (as was the Wii's code name) wouldn't have a standard controller, but in fact make use of motion controls, and that it would have a small emphasis on graphics.

Technically, both the Xbox 360, and the Playstation 3 are superior machines. Both support HD resolutions up to 1080p, both have a more robust online community, both are able to rip music off of CDs, both are able to play DVDs, and the Playstation 3 is able to play Blu Rays.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe launched a competition today where development studios are invited to submit prototypes for a chance to win 10,000 GBP awarded to the five selected, totaling £50,000.

To quote: Sony is to launch the Get in the Game project tonight, offering five developers the chance to receive GBP 10,000 to prototype new content for the PlayStation Network.

The company will be holding a free workshop in December to provide better insight into working with the format holder, with attendees invited to pitch ideas to a panel of Sony execs and producers.

The panel will then select five companies to receive the GBP 10,000 to prototype their ideas over the first three months of 2009. Prototypes will then be shown to Sony Europe with the possibility of going into full production.

The competition is in conjunction with Northwest Vision and Media and is designed to support the games industry in the Northwest region.

"An update to the PS3™ system software was released on November 26, 2008. You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 2.53."

Well, at least it was until a few hours ago - the info seems to have been mysteriously taken down now.

The PS3 firmware, version 2.53, is supposed to include fullscreen Flash support among other features, which could come in handy for streaming videos on your massive telly and stuff.
