Video: Tozai Games Confirms Spelunker HD Hits PSN Tomorrow

159w ago - Tozai Games Director/Producer Brett Ballow has confirmed that Spelunker HD hits the European PSN Store tomorrow alongside a video trailer below.

To quote: Good news my fellow Spelunkers of SCEE territories - the wait is over! It's time to charge up your headlamps and push your cave exploring tendencies to all new heights... er, depths: Spelunker HD is coming to the PlayStation Store tomorrow.

Throughout your arduous adventure you will encounter all the wicked elements of Timothy Martin's original 1983 masterpiece, but with so many newly concocted ways to die it may feel a bit like a devilish set-up... a cave of untold riches guarded by more pits, tricks, traps and more enemies than are stars in the night sky.

But the only stars you'll be seeing for weeks will be the ones circling your head as you run, jump, blast and scratch your way ever deeper towards the 100,000 meter finale. The 100 newly devised caverns may be set in 10 brand new high definition environments, but are just as behemoth in size and complexity as you remember and expect. And getting to the bottom is only half the battle.

197w ago - Today Brett Ballow at Tozai Games has confirmed that updated classic and personal favorite of mine Spelunker HD is coming to PSN soon and shared a PS3 video trailer.

To quote: Does dangling from a frayed rope, thousands of meters beneath the earth's crust, with lit dynamite in hand sound like your idea of a good time?

Spelunker HD closely follows Timothy Martin's brilliant original effort of 1983, even down to the quirky level-scrolling scheme that forces the explorer to get dangerously close to the screen edges. All of the cursed original enemies and terrain threats remain, but with so many new additions I've lost count.

It boasts 100 all-new levels set in 10 newly designed HD worlds, plus the familiar explorer who is liable to pass out from lacing up his boots too tightly: Spelunker may have the weakest character in all of gaming!





But what this anemic explorer lacks in might, he makes up for in bravery. He'll need it because Spelunker HD has more pits, tricks, traps and enemies than a cactus has spines.

Video: PSN Exclusive Spelunker Coming to US on PlayStation 3

260w ago - The PSN remake of Spelunker is ready to explore the dark, cavernous recesses of your console when it makes its way to America, courtesy of Tozai.

[Register or Login to view links] reports that the NES game has been updated with "new graphics, and a 6-player online cooperative mode."

To quote: Spelunker HD can be played with both classic and updated graphics.

Unlike most PSN games, the game includes a Platinum Trophy. Depending on how Tozai prices the US release, this may be one of the cheapest Platinums ever.

Tokyo Game Show 2008 Hands-On: Spelunker for PSN

306w ago - Spelunker is a remake of the NES classic from Irem. Does it look familiar to you? Do you remember the game from way back in the day, 20 years ago?

If you do, it's probably because the aesthetics haven't changed much. Though boasting updated, modern graphics, the game's visuals retain a retro-stylized feel. The 2D characters are still there.

The lifts and ladders are still in the places they would've been. Overall, it looks like an interesting title for those old-school gamers looking for a blast from the past.

Of course, the question is: How does it play? First off, the controls are simple enough. It's a 2D game with a focus on platform jumping, with other actions including: riding down elevators; leaping over pits; climbing ladders; and dodging fire, steam, and toxic liquids.

You can collect items such as bombs to demolish obstacles in your way, or keys in order to progress through locked sections of a stage.

It all sounds very simple, familiar and arcadey -- in other words, a perfect fit for a PSN game. Right?
