Sony has updated the PlayStation Network with an impressive five demos this week. If that weren't enough, two new downloadable games are also now available, as well as a host of game trailers, videos, and wallpaper packs.
Announced in May, Sonly Online Entertainment's High Stakes on the Vegas Strip: Poker Edition deals out five types of poker on the PSN. The game features Texas hold'em, super hold'em, billabong, Tahoe, and Shanghai, and players can practice their bluffing solo or test their mettle online against five others. It will sell for $9.99. The demo is joined by a trailer for the game and a wallpaper pack.
Also added to the PSN this week is Q-Games' PixelJunk Racers. Players will be able to zip around 10 different tracks in micro-sized racer cars seen from a top-down perspective. Variety being the spice of life, the game will offer 32 different modes. The game is available for $6.99. For PS3 owners looking to be judicious with their monies, Sony has ... More »
In Folklore the barrier between the lands of the living and dead is far from impenetrable. Living souls that travel between are called "messengers," and Folklore concerns itself with two in particular: Keats, a worldly reporter obsessed with the occult, and Ellen, a young woman with a murky past. Both are lured to the town of Doolin in short order, and the death of one thrusts both on a journey through seven strange realms of the Netherworld.
Each metaphysical neighborhood is shaped by how the living view death, resulting in worlds as diverse as the thoughts that brought them into being. The Faery Realm is a psychedelic wonderland of glowing butterflies and vibrant foliage that feels more like an interactive painting than anything nature might manage. Warcadia, on the other hand, is a nightmarish eternal battlefield where bullets never stop flying and bombers never stop diving.

PS3 owners get another major RPG! Namco Bandai may have jumped the gun a bit in announcing Eternal Sonata for the PS3, but we weren't quite ready to consider the game confirmed as multiplatform until hearing comment directly from its parent company across the Pacific. That confirmation came today.
The PS3 version of Eternal Sonata, operating under its Japanese title of Trusty Bell Chopan no Yume, will be appearing at Bandai Namco's Tokyo Game Show booth next week, the company announced today through its Tokyo Game Show special site. The game will be shown in video-only form. A Japanese release is planned for some time in 2008.
Other PS3 games planned for the show include playable Time Crisis 4 and video trailers for Nobi Nobi Boy and Soul Calibur 4.
We'll have full coverage of the Bandai Namco booth starting next week on the 20th.
We recently sat down with the Soul Calibur IV development team, had a chat about the game, and discovered that its main programmer has been with the team since the very first game, allaying any fears we may have had about whether the latest game in the series was in good hands.
We spoke at length about how the new game will compare to the team's previous efforts such as Soul Calibur III -- which while popular, was generally received as an unbalanced effort -- and what players can look forward to as we learn more about IV leading up to its release next year.
1UP: Can you tell us about SCIV's play style? Is it more like Soul Calibur III's design, or back to the old-school, hardcore mechanics of SCII?
Katsutoshi Sasaki, director: We have returned to the design flow of SCII. SCII is the most popular and well-known, so we returned to that style here.

In an interview in the latest issue of Famitsu celebrating twenty years of Final Fantasy, translated by Develop, series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has spoken candidly about the development conditions that surrounded the birth of the series’ first outing.
Final Fantasy hit after Dragon Quest had proved that role-playing games were a viable genre on the NES. “There were four games that were following on from Dragon Quest,” reminisced Sakaguchi. “Final Fantasy was one of those challengers.”
Yet despite the groundwork that Dragon Quest had laid before, getting the word out about the game was difficult. “I took an in-development ROM to the editor of ‘Family Computer Magazine’, but was turned away. They told me they didn’t deal with games like that. Only Famitsu dealt with Final Fantasy in any grand way, for which I’m still very thankful.”
However, development of the game didn’t go smoothly, even within Square. The develop... More »
Bloomberg Japan is reporting that the new Persona game originally slated for the PS3 has been cancelled, and is now being scheduled for a release on the PS2 instead.
The last paragraph of the company profile mentions a sequel to Etrain Odyssey and Persona 4 are scheduled to come out in the next fiscal year. However, Persona 4 is listed as a PlayStation 2 game.
While the platform choice is unusual, the time is ripe for a new Persona game. Japan has enjoyed Persona 3 for over a year and Persona ~trinity soul~ is about to air. Perhaps, Persona "4" is a tie in with the 2008 anime series.
