Sony: PS4 to Arrive with Next-Gen Consoles from Competitors

1050°
147w ago - Contrary to previous reports, PlayStation Europe CEO Jim Ryan recently stated to [Register or Login to view links] that PS4 will probably arrive at the same time as Next-Gen XBox and Nintendo consoles.

To quote: "I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition [with the next PlayStation]."

He also noted, however, that there is still a lot of life left in the PS3 and explained:

"If you look at PlayStation 2, now in excess of 150m units installed globally, a huge majority of that was done at price points of £120 or lower.

We've only just hit £199 in the UK [with the PS3] so clearly there's a considerable untapped part of the market there."

Is anyone ready for a potential PS4 release as early as 2012?

Videos: Pre-E3 2011 - Sony Officially Unveils NGP Title Lineup

100°
172w ago - Just before E3 2011, SCEE's James Gallagher has officially unveiled several upcoming NGP titles for Sony's Next Generation Portable handheld alongside some video footage (below) today.

Current titles included in the NGP lineup are Uncharted: Golden Abyss, WipEout 2048, Little Deviants, Reality Fighters, Super Stardust Delta, Sound Shapes, Hustle Kings, Everybody's Golf and Resistance Retribution.

To quote: Since NGP, or next generation portable gaming system, was announced back in January, I know you have been itching to find out more about the hardware and the games we're going to be able to play and how they make use of the innovative new controls.

Now, we are finally able to lift the lid on some of the NGP titles currently in development. I also managed to grab interviews with some of the developers at an event held in London recently, where journalists got their hands around all of the games listed below.

Without further ado, here are the games:

Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Nathan Drake's first portable adventure is developed by [Register or Login to view links], the team behind the acclaimed Resistance Retribution on PSP.

It promises to retain the crucial elements of the Uncharted titles - adventure,...

Speculation: No Ultra HD for Sony's Next-gen PS4 Console?

750°
202w ago - While Sony previously confirmed that developers will play a key role in building their next-gen console which is expected to arrive after the Microsoft and Nintendo counterparts, today PS4Sony.net (linked above) speculates that the PS4 won't include Ultra HD support.

Based on specifications from [Register or Login to view links], they surmise the technology just doesn't seem feasible for next-gen consoles including the PlayStation 4.

To quote: "Today, Full HD offers up a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080, whereas the new you-beaut Ultra HD offers a whopping max resolution of 7680 x 4320!

Ultra HD poses numerous practical problems for manufacturers seeking to bring the new format to consumers. The uncompressed video and audio recorded in ultra HD takes up high volumes of storage space - 3.5 terabytes for one 18-minute clip, requiring a hard disc weighing almost 600 pounds (272 kg).

The prototype ultra HD screen can use more electricity than an entire house might in one month. An early ultra HD camera weighs more than 100 pounds...

Sony: PS4 Likely to Arrive After Next-Gen XBox and Nintendo

650°
219w ago - Recently SCE boss Shuhei Yoshida revealed that PS3 Devs will help build Sony's PlayStation 4 console, and today in an interview with [Register or Login to view links] he expanded stating that the PS4 is likely to arrive after the next-generation XBox and Nintendo consoles.

From the interview, to quote: "Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles. Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move.

Or, because Nintendo's approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware - Wii doesn't even support HD resolution - so they might be the first to move.

Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan."
