The new PSP is a slimmer, lighter version of the original, with a few new features. The system plays the exact same games, but now it has a video output port that lets you connect the PSP to an external display, such as an HDTV, for big-screen playback. The system also has a simplified UMD loading tray, 32MB more system memory, lower power consumption, a smaller battery, and can now charge via USB. The new PSP will replace the current system this September. Systems will be available in Piano Black, Ice Silver, and Ceramic White. They'll come in various retail packages with a variety of bundle options that include pack-in games, UMD movies, memory sticks, and, in the case of the white PSP, a Darth Vader silk-screened battery cover.

The Ice Silver PSP will ship with the Daxter PSP Entertainment Pack.

While it was nice to check out the new PSP's redesigned features at E3, what we really wanted to do was pull out a few games and test how the new portable handles ... More »

Sony announced in a press release on Wednesday that the newly updated PSP 2000 is in stores now from $169.

PSP "Slim" (or 2000 as it's officially called) in stores now
The revamped units, first unveiled at E3 2007, are 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer than original models. HD video and audio out have been added in addition to optimized memory for reduced loading times.

"PSP sales have soared since we introduced the $169.99 price point in April, and that momentum will only continue with the launch of the newly designed PSP," said Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America amid criticisms that the handheld lacks compelling software.

The redesigned PSP comes in three models; Piano Black for $169, a Ceramic White Star Wars bundle for $199, and the Ice Silver Daxter Entertainment bundle for $199.

An estimated 23 million PSP units have been sold worldwide compared to 49 million DS units.

To quote: "What’s that? The new firmware on the PSP Slim and Lite has been dumped in less than 24 hours, by none other than Dark_AleX.

How was this done? That’ll remain a secret, but considering there is no firmware 3.60 EBOOT even available, you can draw the line from there.

Alex has no intention of releasing details on how to dump the firmware at this point, due to the fact he is retired from the scene after all, but at the very least it will offer inspiration to other homebrew teams such as M33 and Wildc*rd."

From the ReadMe: We are proud to present the first custom firmware for the PSP Slim, and the first custom firmware that runs using a 3.XX IPL (3.60)

Download: PSP 3.60 M33 [Archive Pass: _I_LOVE_M33_Slim_Conquered]

3.60 M33 for PSP Slim has all the features of 3.52 M33, except the 1.50 kernel support, as that kernel doesn't work properly on psp slim (hardware problems, screen problems). 3.60 M33 will load homebrew from GAME, GAME150 and GAME360 directories, but all will be executed with 3.60 kernel.

This mean that some homebrews done specifically for the 1.50 kernel cannot work on 3.60 M33. However, the adaptation of code to 2.XX+ kernels is not difficult, and homebrew developers can port their applications to work in these firmwares.

Included with the release is the M33 sdk for programmers.

Hundreds line up for limited edition PSP slim.

The PSP-2000 is off to a great start in Japan, and it's not even officially out yet! Square Enix and Sony teamed up for a limited edition PSP-2000 bundle to accompany the 9/13 Japanese release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. This is exactly one week before the PSP slim sees full release throughout the now leaderless nation.

Included in the 25,890 yen bundle are a retail copy of Crisis Core, a specially crafted Crystal White PSP-2000 unit covered in Tetsuya Nomura artwork, and a Buster Sword strap. Retailers also threw in a Crisis Core inner earphone set, supposedly as a pre-order bonus, although anyone who lined up on launch day was given the gift. All this in a special box that just screams collectors' edition.

This bundle was produced in limited quantities of just 77,777. This is two to three times what the PSP sells in an average week, so we were interested in seeing if the bundle would actually... More »

The UMD is a dead format that's a waste of money, time, and investment according to David Perry. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, the Shiny founder and operator of GameConsultants.com revealed what he would do if he were in charge of PlayStation Portable development.

"They really need to restart the PSP programme in my book. They really need to bring out the PSP 3.0 and start again and try to get a lot of units out by reducing the manufacturing costs, by taking out all the motors and drives and stuff they have in there."
"That will make it even more sexy-looking, because it will be thinner again when they get all that junk out. Then, hopefully, the platform will actually get enough interest so that people will make a game specifically for it," Perry said.

He referred to the recent PSP Slim and Lite remodel as a "head in the sand" move.
