The new head of Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida said, in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine, that Team Ico has something “really, really good on the way.”

The full quote: “They are working on a title. I started the ICO project. Ueda-san joined my team in Japan as a cinematic animator, but he created a short movie and presented it to me and said, “I want to make this game.”

I said, “Yes, let’s do it, but you have never made a game. We have to have experienced people do it,” so it took a while, recruiting one person at a time. And because Fumito Ueda doesn’t compromise, we had to move the development from PSone to PlayStation 2. Then I couldn’t complete the game because I moved to the United States.

It took four years and the second game took four years too. So I started calling them the ‘Olympic Team.’ They haven’t released a PS3 title yet - of course not - they’ll take four years! But ... More »

First-party exclusives are getting rarer these days, with staggered releases being the preferred method of temporary exclusivity by publishers.

Sony head honcho Shuhei Yoshida recently talked about how the new dynamic makes first-party exclusive titles that much more important for the company.

"In this generation, it costs much more to develop one product, it's just natural for third-party publishers trying to recoup the investment from multiple platforms," he told ThreeSpeech.

"I think that's pure economic pressure, pushing most of the third parties to move from some exclusive games to more multi-platform titles."

"Because we know that is the trend, we, as a company, can invest in our first-party studios; in terms of exclusives, our role becomes more important," explained Yoshida.

The process for developing on the PS3 can be quite arduous... Sony have at last faced the awful truth that we have all known from the outset, that has given us a library of uninspired ports, frame rate issues and uninspired unique IP's: The difficulty in developing for the PS3 has driven away developers.

Sony themselves develop 30% of the consoles titles, leaving the rest to third party developers who had begun developing a year earlier for the Xbox 360. With the ease of working with the 360 and the exorbitant costs associated with the PS3, this left most AAA titles merely being ports rather than taking advantage of the superior hardware buried deep inside.

In a manner very unlike Sony, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide has come out and admitted to the problem and attempted to address it with the community.

Mr Yoshida said: "Sometimes we struggle to convince them (third-party publishers) to put more resources into the PS3." More »

As we all know by now, third-party exclusives appear to be going the way of the dodo. It won't be long before the only platform exclusives left will be from the makers of the platform themselves; i.e., first-party titles.

But as evidenced by the likes of Bioshock, it is still possible to buy - at the very least - timed exclusivity. Microsoft clearly has no qualms with this practice, but Sony, as stated by the former big boss of SCEE, Phil Harrison, doesn't believe in it. Now that Mr. Shuhei is in charge, perhaps that viewpoint will change, but then again, it might change simply to suit a more competitive marketplace.

There were rumors (recently shot down by Capcom) that Microsoft has already made a pitch to make Resident Evil 5 a timed exclusive for the Xbox 360. And what's to stop them from pursuing Square-Enix and the likes of Final Fantasy XIII? S-E has already made it abundantly clear that they wish to adopt a new business focus, with the Western gaming a... More »

Sony Computer Entertainment today announced that Shuhei Yoshida, former senior VP at SCEA, will now head Sony’s Worldwide Studios as president - effective immediately.

Yoshida fills the shoes of former SCE WWS boss Phil Harrison, who left the company back in February to join Infogrames as Directeur General Delegue.

Yoshida is far from a newcomer. He’s been with Sony for well over a decade, first serving as one of the key members in establishing the PlayStation brand, and has been working his way through the upper corporate ranks ever since.
