Recently, Sony rep Eric Lempell premiered the Playstation 3’s in-game XMB system along with their answer to Xbox 360’s “achievements”, the PS3 trophy system. Jubilant PS3 owners can now listen to their favorite tracks during those marathon CoD4 sessions, message their friends without leaving Snake in the cold, connect Bluetooth headsets in-game and even enter a different game – all without quitting back to the XMB.

True, 360 owners have had the privilege of using these exact features for the past two and a half years, but with an ever expanding market for Blu-Ray, a wealth of excellent titles for ’08 and Playstation Home on the way, Sony’s now burgeoning online service can now compete directly with Microsoft’s.

If you've been waiting with bated breath for the battle between motherboard giants Asus and Gigabyte to come to blows, it looks like your hopes may come to naught after all.

For a while it looked like Asus was going to take Gigabyte to court over claims the company made regarding the quality of Asus's products, not to mention the veracity of information provided regarding its Energy Processing Unit technology.

With Gigabyte insisting that it did nothing wrong and it was all Asus's fault for passing off shoddy hardware, everyone was waiting for the inevitable courtroom showdown and damages settlement.

Now, however, saner heads at Gigabyte have made the decision to issue a very public apology for the slurs cast upon its competitor's good name before the company finds itself in front of an unamused judge.

According to Digitimes, who broke the news on Friday, Gigabyte has slunk off into the sunset still grumbling that its DES technology... More »

In fall of 2008, two of the industry’s premier shooters will face off in Resistance 2 (PS3) and Gears of War 2 (360).

Resistance, a PS3 launch title, found its way into gamers’ homes and hearts following a stream of positive reviews from the gaming media. Though it sorely lacked the polish of Gears of War in terms of its visuals, it more than made up for its blemishes with a terrific story, solid gameplay and an excellent multiplayer component.

Gears of War, a title that did not see the light of day until over a year after the Xbox 360 was released, featured a brilliant singleplayer campaign with unsurpassed visuals and seriously addictive gunplay. Since their releases, Insomniac and Epic have had more than ample time to optimize each title’s engines in order to get the most out of their respective consoles.

The gaming public is not only looking for these developers to deliver memorable second chapters, but also to create momentum before t... More »

This year is shaping up to be a year of technology battles-Microsoft vs. Google, iPhone vs. Android-but just last month, we saw the end to a momentous tech showdown. On Feb. 19, the high-definition disc format war was finally over. And when the dust settled, Toshiba's HD DVD technology lay beaten on the ground-left for dead by its former friends (Warner Brothers, Amazon, Best Buy) in favor of Sony's Blu-ray format.

HD DVD, someone had to go. Sure, your picture quality was every bit as stunning as Blu-ray's, your price point was mildly more tolerable and your multimedia functionality probably would have been pretty good if it had ever really had a chance to develop. Nevertheless, members of the buying public weren't going to go out and buy two machines, so the world had to pick one-and it just wasn't you.

But take heart. When you reach the sweet hereafter, you'll be in remarkable company, hanging with some of the most promising nonstarters in the history of v... More »
