Stephen Attard, 18, was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery after police say he and a group of teenagers went on a crime spree in Nassau County.
Teenagers who police say went on a video-game-inspired late-night crime spree were arraigned Thursday after police say they mugged a man outside a New Hyde Park supermarket and menaced motorists in Garden City with a baseball bat, a crowbar and a broomstick.
The teens told detectives they were imitating the Grand Theft Auto video game series where players steal cars, beat up other characters and score points for committing crimes.
Police have identified at least three victims: a man they said was severely beaten and had his teeth knocked out during a robbery; a would-be carjacking victim who called 911; and a driver whose van was smashed with a bat.
Nassau Det. Lt. Raymond Coté said there are likely more victims who were attacked. At one point during the spree, the group e... More »
The Internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.
At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.
The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.
David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies could “revolutionise” society. “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communica... More »
The Grand Theft Auto series is what brought videogames to the mainstream. It’s a bold claim, albeit one that’s undeniably true – sure, Lara Croft made the cover of The Face, but if you were to ask an audience of non-gaming types what modern games they’ve heard of, a good percentage of them are bound to reference Grand Theft Auto in one way or another, whether it’s one of the original top-down 2D games or a more recent 3D offering.
Why? Whether it’s for the right reasons (gaining critical acclaim for being, you know, actually good) or because the game was caught up in controversy on more than one occasion, the GTA series is popular – whether distant or close – amongst people of all ages.
Grand Theft Auto – PlayStation
The first game in the series was released on the PlayStation in ‘98 following its ’97 PC release and was instantly recognised for being something special. Not that we need to back up this fact, but the cover of ... More »
In Miami-Dade County, Florida, police have arrested two teens for fatally attacking a 17-year-old boy over his PlayStation Portable (PSP).
According to an arrest report from Miami-Dade Detective Elvey Melagarejo, James Felton-Maitland, 17, was walking home from the library during Christmas vacation of last year.
Jamila “Jam” Brown, 19, and Keith Lebrone Goa, 17, were “loitering on the library grounds and saw the victim and decided to rob him of his PSP,” Melagarejo wrote.
The two teens knocked Felton-Maitland to the ground and began beating him while trying to snatch the PSP. However, Felton-Maitland refused to let go of the PSP and tried to escape his attackers.
As the teens gave chase, when Felton-Maitland crossed a street, a truck slammed into him, resulting in severe head trauma to the 17-year-old.
He died on January 5 at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
Codies' CEO talks dragons, Argonauts, sequels to its hits DiRT and Overlord, and more.
UK-based Codemasters has had quite a recent run in America, boasting a 332 percent leap in U.S. revenue since 2005. And the company's U.S. CEO, Rod Cousens, wants everyone to know it.
In 2005, when Cousens took the helm of the UK-based publisher and developer's American branch, the company was making only 9 percent of its revenue from U.S. gamers. This year, that number stands at 40 percent, and Codemasters would like to keep it that way.
Moving Codies past cricket and cars.In an interview with IGN, Cousens said the company has shifted its focus from being a largely Eurocentric publisher and developer to splitting its efforts between the two large gaming markets. To get there, Codies has built up its U.S. presence and strengthened its relationships with American companies.
"We've geared our product line to the States, and so we're starting to work ... More »
Over 100 games consoles valued at approximately $30,000, were stolen from a GameStop office today. The thieves bore through a wall of a vacant business to gain access to the GameStop Store on March Avenue in Manchester, N.H.
Police said there is no surveillance of the crime and very little evidence was left behind. They are hoping the public will come forward to help solve the crime.
To quote: "It appears that the perpetrators actually entered the office through a wall from the neighboring business," said Sgt. Maureen Tessier, of the Manchester Police Dept.
The suspects were after gaming systems such as Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation.
"Over 100 gaming systems that were removed from the office valued at approximately $30,000," said Tessier.
A similar incident happened recently in Burlington, Mass.
Government regulators have wrapped up examination of publisher's stock options practices with no punishment levied.
Last year, a flurry of publishers saw their stock option granting practices come under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Among the companies affected were THQ, Activision, Take-Two Interactive, and Electronic Arts. While some of those inquiries are still outstanding, one of them has wrapped up, as EA this week revealed to investors this week that it is officially off the hook with the SEC.
"On September 14, 2006, we received an informal inquiry from the Securities and Exchange Commission requesting certain documents and information relating to our stock option grant practices from January 1, 1997 through the date of the letter," the publisher wrote in its latest quarterly report. "We cooperated with all matters related to this request. On October 31, 2007, we received a letter from the SEC informing us that they had termin... More »
A robbery at the GameStop on Cobb Parkway South in Marietta, Georgia left the store manger dead. A man apparently entered the store around closing time, waited for the last of the customers to leave, and then pulled a gun. Using duct tape the suspect tied up the store manager, Matthew Chery, as well as a fellow employee, as well as the employee's father who arrived during the robbery to pick up his child from work.
The suspect escaped with video games, DVDs, and consoles, leaving the three bound with tape over their mouths. Between the time the robber left and the police arrived, the 21 year-old store manager had died, possibly as a result of the duct tape gag, though police are still investigating. The suspect fled the seen with his loot, stealing Matthew Cherry's red 2004 Honda Civic LX in the process.
I contacted another local GameStop location for comment this morning, but they were busy on a conference call about this very incident.
