  • Take-Two Interactive's financial fortunes have run hot and cold since the announcement of a delay for Grand Theft Auto IV. Disappointment at the publisher's biggest game being pushed back into next year was offset partially by news that Rockstar Games' Manhunt 2 had been cleared for a North American release next month and an avalanche of glowing reviews for 2K Boston's BioShock.

Today the publisher announced its financial results for its fiscal third quarter, which ended just days before the GTAIV delay started the stock's roller coaster ride. For the three months ended July 31, Take-Two posted revenues of $206 million, down from $241 million from the same period of 2006. However, the company's losses narrowed nearly as much, with Take-Two losing nearly $59 million for the quarter, a significantly better showing than the $91 million it lost in last year's third quarter.

As for why sales were down, Take-Two blamed it on tough comparisons against the previous ... More »

Capcom, developer and publisher of the Resident Evil franchise, today saw its shares hit a five-year high, closing at 2,855 yen (approx $25) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Bloomberg reports that this was the highest close for the company since September 26, 2002, and that the climb was due to "expectation sales," meaning the assumption that upcoming Capcom Wii games will boost earnings. Capcom expects annual sales to rise 11 percent after doubling the number of its Wii titles to six.

The Osaka-based company's stock has risen 14 percent in the last two days alone, totalling a 33 percent gain in the last year, compared to an 8.8 percent decline in the benchmark Topix index.

Capcom was founded in 1979 and has published franchises including the Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan), Devil May Cry, and Phoenix Wright series, along with critically acclaimed titles, including Okami, from its now defunct Clover Studio.

A Hero Must Rise. Believe. Landmark "Halo 3" Marketing Campaign Debuts; Ushers in Game’s Launch on September 25

Every so often individuals are called upon to rise above themselves and act in a selfless manner – to help, to protect, to defend those in need. We call these people, who rise up in the face of great adversity, heroes. One such individual’s story is about to be told worldwide. On Sept. 25, "Halo 3’s" epic hero Master Chief will rise once again – he’ll face seemingly insurmountable odds with the entire fate of the galaxy riding on his shoulders.

In memory of this hero, and helping build to what promises to be the largest entertainment launch in history on Sept. 25, a series of dramatic and evocative communications elements, created by McCann San Francisco, T.A.G., AKQA, and Microsoft Global Marketing will offer a stirring look at the "Halo" universe and Master Chief.

French scientist Albert Fert and Peter Grunberg of Germany have won the 2007 Nobel Prize for physics.

They discovered the phenomenon of "giant magnetoresistance", in which weak magnetic changes give rise to big differences in electrical resistance.

The knowledge has allowed industry to develop sensitive reading tools to pull data off hard drives in computers, iPods and other digital devices.

The Blu-ray camp has been playing with the anti-piracy protection fire and once again consumers got burned. The addition of the BD+ copyright protection technology rendered recent Blu-ray discs basically unplayable, as several such players don't support the new protection software.

The BD+ technology was finalized in June, 2007 and therefore, it affects all the players released previously.

According to initial reports, the BD+ discs won't play at all on LG Electronics BH100 and Samsung BD-P1200 players. Sony's S1 and several Panasonic models still offer playback capability, but the “playback” has actually been stretched to the limit thanks to the extremely slow load times.

Samsung has already managed to issue a firmware update, which can be downloaded from its site. Also, Sony announced that the PlayStation 3 will play BD+ movies after the 1.93 firmware is applied... More »

Console price cut leads to near-tripling of sales in the UK.

Simple economics says that when you bring the price of something down, as long as the demand is there, more people will buy it, and that's been proven true by Sony as sales of the PlayStation 3 have jumped after a price cut on the console last week.

On 10 October Sony introduced the £299 40 GB PS3 and simultaneously dropped the price of the 60 GB model to £349. Almost immediately sales rose, by nearly 178 per cent according to figures from Chart reported by MCV.

The influx of new PS3 owners had an effect on game sales too, with three exclusive games - Heavenly Sword, MotorStorm and Resistance: Fall Of Man - storming back up the charts.

More PS3 were sold last week than at any time since two weeks after launch, MCV said. That's quite a turnaround for a console that a month ago had its worst sales week ever.

Exactly which of the two versions of the hardware ... More »

The latest racing wheel to come from the Thrustmaster stable takes full advantage of its Ferrari license and comes with the intent of offering "a unique experience by allowing them (that's you) to enjoy intense racing sensations with a racing wheel proudly bearing the legendary 'prancing horse' emblem... nothing less."

But let's get the most important question out of the way first. How much does it cost? Well seeing as though you asked the wheel comes in at £34.99. Which is pretty much the price of a game. Now that's out of the way, onto other equally important things.

So, nothing less then? Well it just so happens that we were recently behind the wheels of several different Ferraris at an event in Italy. Was the Ferrari GT Experience wheel exactly the same?

No, of course not, and you tell that a mile off. But after clamping the whole shebang to the desk, putting the pedals on the floor and sticking on Colin McRae: Dirt, we were suitably impres... More »
