Project Morpheus: Experiencing PS4's Virtual Reality Prototype

50°
4w ago - Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman detailed Project Morpheus today, sharing his experiences with PS4's Virtual Reality Prototype.

Below are all the details, to quote: Project Morpheus is PlayStation's prototype virtual reality system for PS4, announced earlier this week at GDC.

Despite its pre-release status, Morpheus is a sleek, eye-catching piece of hardware that feels surprisingly comfy once strapped to your cranium.

This is partly due to a clever design that distributes most of the unit's weight to the top of your head, not the bridge of your nose or other delicate pressure points.

Properly seated, the unit sits snugly over your eyes but rests comfortably on your face. You peer through two separate lenses, which resolves into one immersive, high definition image that provides a convincing sense of depth.

I tried out two demos: EVE Valkyrie, a fast-paced arcade-style dogfighting simulation set in outer space, and The Deep, a face-to-face encounter with a prowling great white shark. Each of these demos was radically different, expressing radically different approaches to virtual reality gaming.

Of the two demos, EVE Valkyrie's...

Sony Introduces Project Morpheus: Virtual Reality (VR) System for PS4

200°
4w ago - Sony Worldwide Studios President Shu Yoshida officially introduced Project Morpheus ($249-299 targeted price), a Virtual Reality (VR) System for PS4 today at the Game Developer Conference (GDC) 2014 with details below!

To quote: Greetings from GDC 2014! Earlier this evening, I had the pleasure to introduce Project Morpheus, SCE's prototype virtual reality (VR) system that works with PS4. Virtual reality is the next innovation from SCE that we believe will shape the future of games.

I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you're inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real.

Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time.

Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending...

PS4 Virtual Reality Headset to be Revealed at TGS 2013

300°
32w ago - According to CVG (linked above), Sony is preparing to reveal the final piece of its PlayStation 4 hardware strategy at TGS (Tokyo Game Show) 2013 by showcasing a PlayStation-branded virtual reality headset for the upcoming PS4 console.

To quote: "It originally intended to reveal the headset at Gamescom but plans fell through at the eleventh hour. The company is currently weighing up whether the PS4 device should be pitched as a key differentiator for the console or a non-essential add-on.

The matter has been slightly complicated, but not derailed, by the growing industry support for Oculus Rift. Sony's device will be a categorical rival to Oculus, and for months there have been rumours suggesting the two companies are seeking a partnership.

A games developer familiar with Sony's plans, who wished to remain anonymous, told CVG that Evolution Studios is currently working with the device to simulate a cockpit view on its PS4 title Drive Club.

Another developer claimed the virtual reality headset resembles the 3D headset that Sony first revealed in January 2011. The head-mounted display will be available separately, like with the new PlayStation Eye, in order to keep the baseline PS4 price as low as possible.

In August, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida suggested...

Digital Reality Announces Black Knight Sword Charges to PSN Today

50°
70w ago - Digital Reality Product Services Manager Gergely Szilagyi has announced that Black Knight Sword charges onto PSN today!

Below are the details, to quote: Fighting with the strength of many men, The Black Knight must battle through a dark and unusual fairy tale world to rid it of an unexpected evil.

Black Knight Sword is an unusual game for unusual gamers. The idea is to send ourselves back to the 90's, lock the door, forget the outer world and enjoy the pure gameplay.

This traditional side-scrolling action game will provide us with uncountable trials, failures and the joy of beating the unbeatable. It is not hard to lay back on the couch and get lost in the world of the Black Knight.

Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture did a lot with the look and feel of the game. If you still want more, turn up the speakers and be enchanted by Akira Yamaoka's composing and sound design.

Not many contemporary titles have such a unique world like Black Knight Sword. We are sitting in a theatre and living the fairy tale of the Black Knight, fighting his battles, suffering from his wounds... and surely rejoicing in his victory.

Wherever we are, whatever we face, we'll repeatedly ask one question: "What...

50°
96w ago - Sony Associate Producer Shaun Wharton has confirmed that PlayStation Vita owners will have access to augmented reality puzzle game PulzAR beginning today with details below!

To quote: We're very excited to announce the release of PulzAR today, available on PSN for $1.99. In case you've missed our past PulzAR blog posts, here's a word from the game's lead designer to usher in today's release.

I'm Neall Jones, Lead Designer for the next great addition to the PS Vita AR games, PulzAR.

So, what's PulzAR all about then? Well the Earth is in grave danger, somewhere just beyond our planet's outer atmosphere five giant asteroids are heading on a deadly collision course with the planet.

It's up to you, the player, to command a network of laser powered rockets to try and blast the asteroids into a harmless meteor shower before they hit the Earth.

The first Play Card placed is used as the Arena card and draws the level out, then the puzzles use up to 5 Play Cards to place the three types of objects in the game; Reflectors, Splitters and Color Filters.

There have been other laser and light based games before, but none of them have let you see the game world and play it on your table top, something that can only be done with the PS Vita.

The...
