Project Morpheus: Experiencing PS4's Virtual Reality Prototype

50°
4w ago - Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman detailed Project Morpheus today, sharing his experiences with PS4's Virtual Reality Prototype.

Below are all the details, to quote: Project Morpheus is PlayStation's prototype virtual reality system for PS4, announced earlier this week at GDC.

Despite its pre-release status, Morpheus is a sleek, eye-catching piece of hardware that feels surprisingly comfy once strapped to your cranium.

This is partly due to a clever design that distributes most of the unit's weight to the top of your head, not the bridge of your nose or other delicate pressure points.

Properly seated, the unit sits snugly over your eyes but rests comfortably on your face. You peer through two separate lenses, which resolves into one immersive, high definition image that provides a convincing sense of depth.

I tried out two demos: EVE Valkyrie, a fast-paced arcade-style dogfighting simulation set in outer space, and The Deep, a face-to-face encounter with a prowling great white shark. Each of these demos was radically different, expressing radically different approaches to virtual reality gaming.

Of the two demos, EVE Valkyrie's...

Sony Introduces Project Morpheus: Virtual Reality (VR) System for PS4

200°
5w ago - Sony Worldwide Studios President Shu Yoshida officially introduced Project Morpheus ($249-299 targeted price), a Virtual Reality (VR) System for PS4 today at the Game Developer Conference (GDC) 2014 with details below!

To quote: Greetings from GDC 2014! Earlier this evening, I had the pleasure to introduce Project Morpheus, SCE's prototype virtual reality (VR) system that works with PS4. Virtual reality is the next innovation from SCE that we believe will shape the future of games.

I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you're inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real.

Our current prototype for Project Morpheus features a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time.

Project Morpheus also features our new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending...

100°
6w ago - Square Enix Community Project Manager Hergen Thaens detailed the 19 classes of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for PS4 fans today.

To quote: Welcome to another update on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - the biggest one so far. A lot of you have probably played the first beta phase from February 22nd to March 3rd - barely enough time to get your hands on one or two classes in a single city, right? Well then, let's introduce you to the others!

You're free to start in any of the three cities: Gridania, Ul'dah, or Limsa Lominsa. Most of you will want to get used to the game first, so you can play solo and get acquainted with everything.

Up until level 15, you've got tons of local quests and adventures that await you - and from level 15 onwards, the whole world opens up to you as you get access to the airship and the other cities.

If you want to play with your friends, you simply have to choose classes with the same starting cities, and you can group up right away.

Once you've acquired a class, you can change to it at any given time (outside of combat and dungeons) by simply equipping the weapon associated with it. It's that simple!

So, let's get started, shall we?

Gridania, One with the Forest

Gridania lies in the...

First Steps

After you've logged in and updated the game, you can go straight to the character creation process. This is really straightforward - choose whatever suits you best! From hulking Roegadyn to tiny Lalafell, all is available to you.

But an important note: if you want to play with friends, you'll want to make sure that you choose classes that start in the same city! It's a long trip from city to city, until you do the quest to access a new travel method at level 15.

While you work yourself through the introduction, you'll be in an instance (a sealed-off area in the game) that only you are in. That's normal - as soon as you've finished the first few quests, you'll find yourself among tons of other players.

The game will introduce the...
