ID Software Goes Hands-On with Rage for PlayStation 3

200°
158w ago - Today SCEE's Roland Fauster has shared some hands-on details from ID Software spotlighting Rage for the PlayStation 3 entertainment system.

To quote: When Rage is released this October, it will be the end of a long journey for the game. It has been four years since [Register or Login to view links] first announced their large demo project for their new proprietary ID Tech 5 Engine. Nevertheless, the popularity of the project has never waned.

Two weeks ago at Gamescom, we were finally able to try the game out ourselves at the Bethesda stand and gain our own impression of the exciting FPS/Racing/RPG crossover.

Our gaming session begins right at the start of the game. As one of the few survivors of a meteorite strike, we are fighting our way on foot and in exhilarating dune buggies through an inhospitable world, when we are suddenly attacked by a mutant, and quickly believe we are in a realm of the dead, when a nice, human-looking inhabitant saves us at the last moment. Very friendly! Naturally, we feel indebted and are prepared to carry out some assignments for him.

This means getting rid of deformed mutants from certain buildings, and we do this in classic shoot'em up gameplay fashion, which is really enjoyable, but Rage would only be half as fun if you didn't...

Rage to Require 8GB Mandatory PlayStation 3 HDD Installation

161w ago - Today Dutch site PSFocus.nl (linked above) reports that the upcoming PlayStation 3 title Rage will require an 8GB mandatory PS3 HDD installation.

The XBox 360 will also offer an optional HDD install of 21-22GB in size, and the game is scheduled for release to both platforms on October 4 in North America and October 7, 2011 in Europe.

To quote, roughly translated: While our boys on the floors of the gamescom stumble around, we get it all within about RAGE. Tim Willits of Bethesda took the liberty to PSFocus a few details to release about RAGE.

The Internet is already known that there is an optional installation available for the Xbox 360 which is up to 21/22 GB. PlayStation 3 gamers have fortunately not much free space.

With a mandatory installation of 8 GB PlayStation 3 gamers can play the game. Yet a large number of gigabytes on your HDD, but fortunately not 22 GB. We also have picked up some of our loyal Faunus (Roel Wijts).

The controls are also adjustable in RAGE. For example, if you find more comfortable to shoot with R1 instead of R2 which is the default, you can always alter it. So are you a true gamer Call of Duty, you can take the controls more convenient way in this game.

Hands-on: Rage - Dead to the World on PlayStation 3

163w ago - Today Sony Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has shared some hands-on interview details for Rage on the PlayStation 3 entertainment system.

To quote: Last week, Jeff and I went hands-on with the PS3 version of [Register or Login to view links], [Register or Login to view links] October-bound first-person shooter.

All told, we experienced more than two hours of post-apocalyptic action, driving, and exploration in a nuke-shattered world of exquisite visual detail and startling violence.

Afterwards, we spoke with id Software President Todd Hollenshead to discuss what made the legendary DOOM developer shift gears to a story-driven, open-world playground – and to learn more about the mysteries lurking in that sprawling wasteland.

Todd Hollenshead, President, id Software: "You have to sort of experience it, it's very difficult to explain. The megatextures allow us to make the entire world unique. It's all painted and modeled and because we're streaming the textures, we're not really constrained by system memory. We can have completely unique elements throughout the world without costing us performance."

Sid Shuman, PlayStation.Blog: Any hands-on discussion of Rage must begin with its stunning visuals. Rage is...

Rage from iD Software for PlayStation 3: E3 2011 Hands-On

100°
170w ago - Correspondent Andy Burt has shared hands-on details from E3 2011 today on iD Software's Rage for the PlayStation 3 entertainment system.

To quote: When [Register or Login to view links] releases a new IP, it's more than a big deal – it's an event. The veteran development studio behind classics such as Doom and Quake is preparing to unleash its next big shooter, Rage, this October. And at E3 2011, the storied studio presented a wildly diverse group of missions from the post-apocalyptic adventure to try out on the PS3 version of the game.

First things first: Rage looks fantastic. As id Software's graphics guru John Carmack recently [Register or Login to view links], Rage may very well surprise gamers who expect the PS3 version to play second-fiddle to the PC version.

Rage is one of the sharpest-looking games I've seen in a long time, with the developer's new id Tech 5 engine really stealing the show. Walking around Rage's post-apocalyptic wasteland should seem like a gloomy experience, but the game's slick visuals and smooth-as-butter animations and framerate incite awe more than anything else.

Throughout Rage's expansive single-player environments, players can talk to many...
