Sony Introduces the SOCOM 4 PlayStation 3 Character Squad

50°
224w ago - Sony's Creative Director Ed Byrne has introduced the SOCOM 4 PlayStation 3 character squad today to fans, as follows:

Hey SOCOM fans. Back in March, we announced SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs and shed some light on the single-player campaign, storyline and central characters.

Today, we'd like to provide some intel on the key members of your squad...

Cullen Gray ("OpsCom")
Force: NATO ISF
Age: 36
Leading the charge is Operations Commander, Cullen Gray. Born the son of a naval analyst and a civilian geologist, Cullen Gray's service record is the stuff of legends. While renowned for quickly and quietly resolving some of NATO's most tenuous situations, psychologically his profile is still something of a mystery.

Routine profiling shows that he is withdrawn and cynical, choosing to socialize little with colleagues and showing a distinct lack of empathy for those unwilling to comply with his directives.

Park Yoon-Hee ("Forty-Five")
Force: South Korean 707th Special Missions Battalion
Age: 30
Park Yoon-Hee got her start in the Southern Korean 707th Special Mission Battalion. Within eighteen months she was attached to the 45th Special Forces Brigade after the Korean military relaxed restrictions for female...

Rumor: Sony's PSP2 to Feature a Quad Core Graphics Chip?

200°
268w ago - Today [Register or Login to view links] is reporting that PowerVR technology from Imagination Technologies will form the basis of the still-in-development PSP2.

The site claims to have insider sources that reckon that a quad core iteration of the low-power SGX543MP chip, codenamed "Hydra", will be present in the next generation handheld, not to be confused with the forthcoming PSPgo.

To quote: The chip itself appears to be very close indeed to the enhanced GPU experts say resides within the iPhone 3GS, providing a generational leap in performance over older PowerVR MBX processors found in the previous models.

The same technology is also found in select netbooks such as the Dell Mini 12, as part of the new low power Poulsbo chipset. The single core version of the chip has been demonstrated at CES running Quake 3 Arena at 30FPS.

The obvious difference of course is that the SGX543MP is a multicore processor, available with anything up to 16 cores on tap. According to the original report, PSP2 opts for a quad configuration offering notional specs of 133 million polygons per second, and 4Gpixels/sec fillrate, assuming that Hydra operates at the chip's low-end of 200MHz (higher speed variants are also available, presumably...
