Rumor: Sony's PSP2 Will Ditch the UMD and Feature 1GB of RAM

550°
134w ago - With the PSPgo price cut and recent PlayStation Phone rumors, today Kotaku.com (linked above) reports that Sony's PSP2 will ditch the UMD and feature 1GB of RAM.

Additionally, VG247.com are reporting that PSP2 is currently codenamed Veta.

To quote: "One of the key ones is that the PSP2 will not have a UMD drive. The UMD (Universal Media Disc) was launched in 2004 for use in the PSP. Initially, the format was used for movies, but slow sales of UMD films lead to studios dropping support for the format.

Sony's PSPgo is UMD-free version of the PSP, and sources tell Kotaku that the PSP2 will follow in the footsteps of that portable. Games will be stored on a Memory Stick, according to one source. Though we've also been told that Sony is still puzzling out what the final non-UMD storage solution will be for the PSP2.

We've also learned that the PSP2 will be a much more powerful gaming device with twice the RAM of the Xbox 360.

While we don't yet know all of the portable's system specifications,...

Video: Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake PSP Hits PSN and UMD Today

50°
160w ago - Sony Producer Matt Morton of Santa Monica Studio has announced that Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake for PSP officially hits PSN and UMD today.

To quote: Fat Princess has released in a portable way! With new maps and modes for the PSP, On top of those already from the PS3!

Play along with your friends, or go online. You're guaranteed a most wonderful time! The new stuff adds up to 50 percent! You've got to admit, that's rather quite decent!

Made by a talented team at SuperVillain, You will soon find yourself playing again and again. Battles are fierce, intense and quite fun! Soon you too will cry "Cake for everyone!"

OK. I couldn't help myself. I have been in quite a festive mood as we near the release of Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake. I couldn't help myself from trying out a bit of prose. As you can see... I won't be running off to publish any poetry books in the near future, but I WILL be playing Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake on my PSP.

I'm very proud of this game and how well SuperVillain Studios brought all of the PS3 fun into the PSP. Plus they have added so much more to it with new game modes like Demolition, Jailbreak and Grim Reaper, plus the neat Dilapidated...

Video: Sony Offers PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe PSP UMD for $10

50°
161w ago - Today Q-Games Ltd President and Executive Producer Dylan Cuthbert has unveiled on Sony's PlayStation Blog that the PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe PSP UMD is now being offered for just $10.

To quote: We're happy to announce that today, PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe makes its grand debut outside the PlayStation Network! Yes, that's right, due to popular request from you, the fans, we have twisted Sony's arm to release the game on UMD in North America.

Even better, we have squeezed the price down to just $9.99 which is an *amazing* value! Think about it: three islands and over 45 stages to play. As Monsters fans know, that means quite literally hundreds and hundreds of hours of incredible gameplay...every minute as addicting and fun as the last.

On top of that, full online play is supported. You can play cooperatively with anyone in the world, or just hang out in the chat rooms and watch the sports-like "ticker-tape" commentary of existing games run by. It's a very cool new feature, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

And of course, all the money we make from Monsters is being funneled into future PixelJunk games (we have some crazy stuff in store for you!), so that's an even greater incentive to jump to your local game retailer right now. Buy it for yourself, buy...

Rumor: Logitech is Developing a PSP Go UMD Drive Add-on

200°
181w ago - Update: PlayStationLifestyle has now confirmed via Logitech's Senior Public Relations Specialist Sarah Youngbauer that this rumor appears to be false, to quote: "This is not something that our company is working on."

Today a rumor has surfaced that Logitech may be developing a UMD drive add-on which could be fitted to the PSP Go to enable UMD media playback.

According to CVG, Logitech UK claim to have never heard of such a peripheral, but concede that the PSP Go UMD drive "may be something the US office is working on."

Their US counterparts, and Sony, have yet to comment.

To quote: "Third party peripheral company Logitech is working on a UMD drive add-on for the PSPgo, a source has told CVG.

Neither a price or release date was given, but we were told that the device will plug into the PSPgo, allowing users to play their UMD games on the portable.

"The only problem is that it'll make the PSP a little bulky", said our source."

GTA: Chinatown Wars Launches Today for PSP on UMD and PSN

100°
188w ago - Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has shared a video and announced that GTA: Chinatown Wars launches today for PSP on UMD and PSN.

To quote: With Grand Theft Auto: China Chinatown Wars hitting for PSP today, Rockstar Games sent along a brand new clip from the game. Like you'd see on any talk show, they also set up the clip; here's Rich Rosado, a RockStar producer.

Hello all! It's pleasure for me to introduce this next clip for the PSP and PSPgo fans reading this out there. We know that a lot of fans have been waiting to finally get their hands on Chinatown Wars and we're thrilled to finally bring an even more refined version of this game to the PSP.

For anyone that hasn't heard anything about Chinatown Wars yet, I can tell you that it brings a unique, arcade-like approach to the series. We really rethought the way a portable GTA experience could work from the ground up. On the PSP, the game includes some exclusive missions, music, re-optimized controls, and an intense high-resolution graphical overhaul that could only be done on this platform.

Some may still not realize this, but Chinatown Wars is actually the biggest portable GTA we've ever done - even bigger than Liberty City Stories or Vice City...
