Video: Toy Soldiers: War Chest on PS4 - PlayStation 4 Hands-on

1w ago - Sony Social Media Senior Manager Sid Shuman shared a PS4 video today showcasing Toy Soldiers: War Chest going hands-on with PlayStation 4 below.

To quote: If I'm frank, I wasn't really sure I was the right fit for this game. Mostly because I'd never played the earlier entries in the (well-respected) Toy Soldiers series, but also because toy collector culture doesn't much tickle my fancy.

So imagine my surprise when I went hands-on with Toy Soldiers: War Chest on PS4 and discovered not just a clever fusion of tower defense and third-person action, but a fiendishly addictive vortex that quickly reduced me to shrieking "kablammo! kablammo! boooosh!" while I bombarded hordes of rainbow ponies with mortars. Watch our new video above for the full story.

At its core, Toy Soldiers: War Chest is a classic tower defense game set in three-dimensional environments, a nice upgrade from the static 2D backdrops of most TD titles. You'll set up turrets in between waves of approaching enemies, feverishly upgrading and repairing them to prevent being overrun.

You earn gold by slaying incoming enemy hordes, then spend the proceeds on new specialized turrets (anti-armor, anti-infantry, anti-air) and fancy upgrades that increase your attack range, damage and so forth. So far, so good - it's...

Hands-on with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on PlayStation 4

1w ago - Sony Online Content Producer Rhys Sutheran went hands-on today with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on PlayStation 4.

To quote: Talion - Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's central character - is a man holding a grudge , not to mention a very large sword. Having had his family murdered by Sauron's armies, seeking vengeance on those who wronged him is set to become the driving force behind Monolith Games' forthcoming Lord of the Rings spin-off when it launches on 30th September 2014 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

In preparation, we got our hands on an early build of the game to put it through its paces. Here are just a few of the ways we found that Talion can wreak his revenge...

Choose your target

As Talion enters a new area, he can survey the land for Sauron's armies and check out which of his captains control the various sections of the map. If he's encountered one of them before - or managed to wring vital information from their spineless foot soldiers - he can check out their strengths and weaknesses, see where they can usually be found and start planning his attack.

Dominate the weak

In the thick of battle, Talion can grab a weakened enemy and use his wraith powers to dominate them, turning them to fight alongside the outnumbered...

Video: Far Cry 4 Hands-on for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3

2w ago - Sony Social Media Specialist Ryan Clements shared a video today going hands-on with Far Cry 4 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles below.

To quote: [Register or Login to view links] explores two tonal opposites: the icy, high-reaching peaks of the Himalayan mountains, and the warm, mythical memories of Shangri-La.

Ubisoft recently showed off both of these environments - which make up just some of the many areas in its upcoming open-world shooter.

In Far Cry 4, players face the despotic Pagan Min and his violent regime in the fictional region of Kyrat. But each player can make a near endless number of choices along the way, and enlist the help of both weapons and the wild to accomplish his or her goals and topple Min's tyranny.

Far Cry 4′s hero Ajay Ghale - a Kyrat native - travels to Kyrat to spread his mother's ashes. But he's soon swept up in the bloody violence that plagues the country and its people. In the demo I played, Ajay makes his way through one of Min's outposts to kill the area's commander.

This first section takes place amidst Himalayan peaks, with flurries of snow and slivers of rock accenting the crests and ridges. The developers at Ubisoft Montreal...

Sony Goes Hands-on with Destiny PlayStation 4 Beta, Details

7w ago - Sony Social Media Specialist Justin Massongill went hands-on today with the Destiny PlayStation 4 Beta with details below.

To quote: Today, PS4 and PS3 owners will get a chance to experience Bungie's galaxy-spanning epic [Register or Login to view links] for the first time.

Assuming the role of a newly revived Human, Awoken, or Exo, players will explore the ruins of a Russian Cosmodrome and battle hordes of formidable Fallen and feral Hive, all while earning new skills and collecting increasingly effective weapons and armor.

I had an early opportunity to play the Beta, and I've collected my initial notes below. While this post is by no means comprehensive, I hope it'll help get you up to speed before you hop in yourself. And if you're in the Beta, please share your tips, observations, and feedback in the comments below.

If you played or read about Destiny's Alpha last month, you might be wondering what's changed for the Beta. The answer: plenty! Perhaps most notably, the Beta fills in many narrative gaps with pre-rendered and in-engine cinematics, fleshing out more of the backstory and making this feel much more like a world I want to explore.

These scenes are fully voice-acted;...

Sony Goes Hands On with The Last of Us Remastered on PS4

7w ago - Sony Social Media Senior Manager Sid Shuman goes hands-on today with The Last of Us Remastered PS4 on PlayStation 4 with details below.

To quote: With [Register or Login to view links]'s PS4 release just weeks away (July 29th), I dove into a pre-release version of the game to see exactly how Naughty Dog is leveraging PS4's hardware to upgrade last year's biggest Game of the Year winner.

First, there's the immediately noticeable bump in native screen resolution. The jump from 720p (PS3) to native 1080p (PS4) gives the visuals a major shot in the arm. The crisp new presentation banishes those nasty jaggies to the margins, while higher resolution environment textures adorn the lovingly crafted post-apocalyptic environments.

But the kicker is the new framerate. I'll admit to being at least a bit skeptical on hearing that Naughty Dog would target a smoother, more fluid 60 frames per second for The Last of Us Remastered. I wondered whether it would add a distracting layer of artificiality, that it might somehow interfere with the game's cinematic look and feel.

Luckily, based on my hands-on experiences at a recent media event in New York City, those concerns...
