Rumor: Sony PS3 Blu-ray Drive Emulation PCB in Development

1300°
127w ago - Today we received word from Dutch site [Register or Login to view links] (ConsoleWinkel) of a rumor that a Sony PS3 Blu-ray drive emulation PCB is currently in development which will allow users to unlock their PlayStation 3 console without the use of Custom Firmware or dongles.

Reportedly they have been in contact with [Register or Login to view links] who stated a team (possibly the Wasabi or Drivekey team) is working on the PS3 Blu-ray drive emulation PCB that is slated for release later this year.

They have also speculated via e-mail that the project has been kept under tight wraps due to Sony being unable to stop this new PS3 hack via Firmware updates, meaning once it becomes public Sony's legal team will be on the warpath in full force.

Below are some concept pictures (not actual finished product pictures) from their site and the details, roughly translated as follows:

"PlayStation 3 drive emulation

No hacking, no flashing, no modding. Emulation is the future. A team is currently working on a new hack for the PlayStation 3.

The Blu-ray player, Sony's PCB has been cracked and costs can thus be gekloont. The team probably Wasabi or Wiikey team...

JTag Port on PS3 Blu-ray Drive Board Located and Mapped

1050°
259w ago - Developers at DemonHades have located and mapped the JTag Port on a PS3 Blu-ray drive board today.

To quote, roughly translated: I found the JTag port for the Blu-ray Reader on the PlayStation 3. Last night after finishing the research meeting I went looking for information about BD integrated reader.

In and looking at the information that I found on the back of the plate reader I saw that there is no connector terminals, these terminals belong to a connector which connects 'something' via terminals and through the Internet I found the points used in a JTag, including the TDO, TDI, TMS etc.

Originally developed for printed circuit boards, it is currently used for test of submodules of integrated circuits, and is also useful as a mechanism for debugging embedded applications, as it provides a backdoor to within the system.

When used as a debugging tool, an in-circuit emulator that uses JTag as the transport mechanism allows the programmer to access the debugging module that is integrated into the CPU. The debug module enables the programmer to correct their errors and code logic of their systems.

There are consumer products that have a JTag port integrated, so that the connections are often available on the PCB as part of the prototype phase of the product. These...

PCB Productions Credits Sony Bend on Syphon Filter 5 for PS3

50°
293w ago - Just over a week ago a rumor that a new Syphon Filter title may be in development for PS3 surfaced.

Today, some more fuel has been added to that rumor as follows: A particularly watchful, Columbo-esque reader at [Register or Login to view links] recently put a few widespread pieces of information together to draw an intriguing conclusion - Sony Bend, the studio behind every Syphon Filter title to date, recently put up a help wanted ad calling for a full-time game tools programmer with PS3 or Xbox 360 experience.

But wait, there's more- adding further fuel to the Filter flames is an entry on the Credits [Register or Login to view links] of digital content creation company PCB Productions. About a quarter of the way down the page, the company acknowledges their mo-cap work for Syphon Filter 5, a PS3 title coming out of, you guessed it, Sony Bend.

This one ranks pretty high on the likelihoodometer- we'll be waiting with bated breath to see if Sony will confirm Gabe's triumphant return to home consoles.
