Sony Details State of PlayStation Home for PS3 Owners in 2010

50°
238w ago - Today Sony's PlayStation Home Director Jack Buser has detailed the state of PS Home for PS3 owners in 2010.

To quote: As many of you know, 2009 was a big year for PlayStation Home. The millions of you that use PlayStation Home saw us transform from a 3D virtual world into a true social gaming platform with more than 50 spaces and over 100 games.

One of the biggest highlights of the year was the launch of the popular Sodium One space, which has redefined what a social game can be by combining massive action, stunning graphics and social experiences in a way never done before.

PlayStation Home has become a leader in the evolution of social games from simple 2D web games to immersive high-definition 3D experiences made possible by the tremendous horsepower of the PlayStation 3.

As we start the new year, we are not slowing down. We are adding new spaces, community events and virtual items each and every week, with many of these updates based directly on your feedback.

Last week marked an important milestone in our evolution with a new iteration of the Mall, which was heavily influenced by our community's request to have a more streamlined shopping experience.

The Mall now features stores from some of our closest partners, including Loot from [Register or Login to view links]

Valve Not Bothering With PS3, Newell Apologizes to PS3 Owners

550°
266w ago - Valve boss Gabe Newell recently had a little chit-chat with host Geoff Keighley on tonight's episode of [Register or Login to view links], where he stated:

Keighley: Are you guys working on PlayStation 3 here now, trying to understand it, trying to get better at it?

Gabe: Uh, no. Not in any real way.

Newell then followed up by [Register or Login to view links] to PlayStation 3 fans, stating he's "sorry" to PS3 owners, who have a "legitimate beef with" Valve.

Newell is noted for his openly negative view of PS3, but when asked about it he said, to quote:

"If you look at the customers that I feel we've done the worst job at taking care of is the people who bought our product on the PS3 - Orange Box on PS3. Those are the people who I have trouble saying anything to other than 'Yeah, I'm sorry. You have legitimate beef with us."

EMA Report Finds 87% of PS3 Owners Watching Blu-ray Movies

300°
271w ago - According to the [Register or Login to view links] 2008 [Register or Login to view links], the Home Entertainment Industry holds survey results showing 87% of PS3 owners reported they watch Blu-ray movies on their console... essentially concluding that the PS3 saved Blu-ray.

The study also found the average gamer to be 33-years old with 24% that are older than 50.

To quote: The EMA feels Blu-ray was the losing format in 2006, but thanks to the PS3, it rebounded in 2007 to become the de facto winner. Their prediction is the PS3 will be "the main force behind Blu-ray disc sales until 2009, when standalone Blu-ray players are expected to outpace the sales volume of the PS3."

We think this report raises a number of questions:

Is the PS3 really the driving force behind Blu-ray? Or is Blu-ray the driving force behind the PS3? Did Sony take too much of a gamble with a new format and didn't invest enough into the games? If so, will that improve now that Blu-ray has won?

SCEE President: Wii Owners Will Upgrade to a PS3 Console

500°
275w ago - A few months ago SCEE confirmed news that Andrew House would be replacing David Reeves as president.

That being said, it appears the new president of SCEE isn't wasting any time taking over the reins from David Reeves and causing a stir.

After having been in his new office for only a little over a month, House is already making daring statements, telling Edge-Online in an [Register or Login to view links] that he believes Wii owners will eventually 'upgrade' to PS3, and that the PS3's lifecycle could "significantly" exceed ten years.

To quote: "If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64 [sic], we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the lifecycle when the price point was right for them."

"I think we're going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it's a Blu-ray player as well and that there's a [greater] wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will...
