Sony Announces PS2 Sale Starts Today on PlayStation Network

64w ago - Sony's Jawad Ashraf of the PlayStation Store Team announced today that their PS2 Sale starts today on PlayStation Network.

To quote: Hi everyone! Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone that has shared a favourite memory from the PSone era over the last two weeks. It's great to hear after all this time that there is still such a passion for such a groundbreaking piece of hardware!

Onwards and upward though! Next, PlayStation 2. Released way back in late 2000, PlayStation 2 was the home of some of the best games ever, with all-time greats such as, Kingdom Hearts, God of War, ICO, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy X, Tekken 5, Grand Theft Auto III and many, many more.

With over 150 million units sold (and counting), PS2 is to this day still regarded as one of the finest gaming machines ever created.

PlayStation 2 was the first home console I could claim as my own. My parents were quite anti-gaming and were convinced it'd melt my brain, so I'd only really play games when I snuck to the arcades with my brothers.

However, after a lot of begging (and saving my lunch money), I was finally able to get one for my birthday. My first game was Tekken Tag Tournament. Sadly I didn't have a memory card for a while, so I'd barely experience...

Fatal Frame: Behind the Lens of the PS2 Horror Classic on PS3

74w ago - Series Director Makoto Shibata has gone behind the lens of the PS2 horror classic Fatal Frame on PS3 today.

Below are the details, to quote: With the recent release of Fatal Frame on PSN as a PlayStation 2 Classic, we reached out to Fatal Frame series director Makoto Shibata to share some thoughts on the inception of one of gaming's tensest, most atmospheric series.

The initial project kicked off under the "Project ZERO" codename when the PlayStation 2 development tools were first made available, back at the time.

Before the Fatal Frame project, I worked on the "Deception" series (aka Tecmo's Deception) which focused on coming up with a new, yet complex game system in order to broaden player experiences. This led us to transcending traditional game genres by combining the best parts of different game systems: action, adventure, puzzle and simulation genres, just to name a few.

When the PS2 hardware came out with dramatically improved graphical capabilities, we took a different approach by keeping the game system and play experience simple. We tried to emotionally reach out to players and get them to feel things they cannot actually see on screen.

As a result, we selected the horror genre, which was an area aligned with my personal interests since I tend to...

Sony Announces Primal: PS2 Cult Classic Comes to PSN Tuesday

100°
135w ago - Sony Creative Director Chris Sorrell has announced today that the PS2 cult classic Primal is coming to PSN on Tuesday.

To quote: Primal grew from a warm, happy, and long-lost place where we were insanely fortunate enough to have an amazing team, an exciting new platform to build for (PlayStation 2!), and the freedom to make the game we wanted to make.

Core influences were some of the awesome TV shows of the day: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dark Angel to name the foremost. We wanted to build a game that captured the vibe of these shows while also showing off some of the cool technical and artistic things we thought we could achieve with the (then) new PS2.

The premise was a classic: pretty girl meets gargoyle, explores demon worlds, acquires demonic powers, and (spoiler!) has to kill her boyfriend to save the universe.

We were lucky to hook up with our dream voice cast to bring these characters to life - Hudson Leick (best known from the Xena: Warrior Princess) and the fantastic and sadly missed Andreas Katsulas (whose work on Babylon 5 I so admired).

Together they brought a truly unusual warmth to our main characters that stood out at the time, and remains quite special even to this day.

Musically our game world needed some 'bite',...

Video: Sony PlayStation: 15 Years In The Making

400°
212w ago - Sony's Senior Social Media Specialist Rey Gutierrez has shared a video today as part of their celebration dubbed Sony PlayStation: 15 Years In The Making.

To quote: Today we celebrate 15 Years of PlayStation, the gaming industry and most importantly, the PlayStation fan. It is an honor to officially kick off our celebration on the PlayStation.Blog with a retrospective journey and history lesson 15 years in the making.

The PlayStation, the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation 3 – these aren't just names to Sony gaming products – these are milestones in every gamers' coming of age story.

Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Killzone and God of War, aren't just clever titles to PlayStation classics – but defining moments in gaming history where PlayStation stands above the rest, delivering memorable experiences and jaw-dropping moments.

Sitting at PlayStation and being part of this amazing journey as a gamer and now working with the PlayStation team, I can't help but recollect my first encounter with Metal Gear Solid.

Within moments of popping in my PlayStation Underground disc, and booting the MGS demo – I knew right there and then what I wanted to do with my life....
