Crytek is officially hiring for the PlayStation 3, prompting more speculation (from us) that its hi-tech PC shooter Crysis is heading to console in some form.

A job ad that's appeard on the Germans dev's Web site is advertising for a PS3 console programmer to develop "Next-Generation GameFramework based on CryEngine 2.0".

The applicant must have fives-plus or more years C++ experience and have shipped "at least 1 title for Nintendo GameCube, PS2 or XBOX or simultaneously." What if I've actually made two PS3 games then, is that not good enough to be a PS3 programmer?

The position doesn't come as too much of a surprise as Crytek's already gone on the record saying all of its future titles will be multiplatform from now on.

With that considered, this is probably a move to make CryEngine 2 work on consoles - but we'd still like to see Crysis on PS3, if only so we can run it.

The full job specs follow if you fancy your chance... More »

Tim Willits and Todd Hollensead of ID recently spoke to GameInformer regarding their latest focus - RAGE. Hollensead has revealed that the first thing his PS3 programmers will say is that essentially it is a pain to work with.

However, he revealed that while there are challenges to it, it's certainly "not as hairy" as people originally said it was.

To quote from the Interview:

Q: Have you found developers for the PS3?

Hollensead: I think the programmers will tell you first that it’s a pain in the ass to work with. They have said that it’s a pain in the ass to work with, but at the same time, that’s our job—making games—and the strategy that we wanted was to have a game that worked on all the platforms.

John, to his credit, came up with a technology solution that allowed us to do something unique, which is to have one source base for the media, not source for programming source, art source. Once ... More »

Update: Trophies may be patched into Bionic Commando: Rearmed at some point. However, this isn't guaranteed. According to John Diamonon from Capcom:

"Medals are the equivalent to achievements. Basically doing the same things in either version will open up these medals. We are currently reviewing how much work it would take to retro tag save/clear data for trophy support. Certainly though, if it does not require a huge amount of programming time (I.e. money) then we will probably move forward with it."

The upcoming 1942 and Bionic Commando PSN games are not going to support trophies, according to a statement by Capcom PR Manager Tim Ng. Many speculated after a recent PlayStation.Blog post that the upcoming downloadable Bionic Commando title would support PS3's Achievement-esque Trophy system.

Games like Call of Duty 4 run at a framerate of 60 frames per second on both systems. But Call of Duty 4 is a game that experienced technical problems with various bottlenecks due to the varying levels of action that occur on the screen. The game was originally designed to run at 60 frames per second at 720p, but it caused drops in the framerate.

The proof of this is the fact that Call of Duty 4 runs at a resolution of only 640p on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. This may be “equal” in terms of what is displayed on the screen, but the FACT is that Call of Duty 4 is putting a much larger burden on the PS3 than it is the Xbox 360.

Confirmation of this can be seen in the large number of games that “run smoothly at 60 frames per second on the Xbox 360, but struggle to run at 30 frames per second on the Playstation 3.” That was a quote from Gamespot.

It’s simple math: The Xbox 360 can display approximately 500,000,000 polygons per second... More »
